I am very much with Lee Gexiao's teacher - his wife may be dead and she may have been the best, but he himself isn't dead and life is full of second/third/etc bests - it's very pragmatic.
I kind of wish more characters would take that approach...
(Though I wouldn't say other options are second and third bests so much as equal but different, in most cases.)
