Well, this was fun! I thoroughly enjoyed this and will be tuning in for more. I do wish the dialogue was snappier and the show had a bit of a sense of humor about itself, but Nikita is awesome (I've had a long-term girlcrush on Maggie Q, so that undoubtedly helps), there are things blowing up, and Shane West is pretty (I can see myself shipping his character with Maggie's in the future, if the show chooses to go that way. Especially after she shot him :P). I really liked the Ukrainian convict girl as well (I take it she is the other major female character?).

Wiki article says that some critics compared this to the Dollhouse which leaves me scratching my head madly. I mean, if Nikita was a brainwashed sexual slave obedient to her evil masters (who were all woobies, honest!), maybe, but as it is, it's a kickass show about a kickass woman. A show that does not make me cringe.

I am kinda imagining an IRIS cross-over in my head now. :)

ETA: You guys win. I am going to give Vampire Diaries another chance. I am going to watch s2 opener.

I have not been watching much western drama series, being deluged with K&Cdramas. But Nikita is something I will look into. Have you seen the older Canadian TV series, La Femme Nikita by Peta Wilson? Now I love that show but for some reason I was never able to finish the last 2 seasons. Do check that one out if you have not.

But...but...it has a female lead! With dark hair! And slinky clothes and weapons in the previews! Clearly, they are exactly alike. (From what I recall of the movie, she was under the control of a government agency and the assassins were pretty much conditioned into complete obedience or something, so that may be part of it? But it's been ages since I saw the movie, and I never saw the last series.)

But in the series, she's escaped their control and is bringing them down with the help of a mole. So, thankfully, not like Dollhouse at all.

If you like kick-ass heroines, Peta Wilson aka Nikita is it! I just finished downloading the 1st episode of the new Nikita. Will see how it compares.

HAHA. i prefer Stefan as well and actually Ian is really gorgeous when cleaned up and sharply dressed but in this scruffy dark clothes outfits they have him in make him look kind of blah, he just doesnt do scruffy well IMO. Plus since he's so fair skinned, darker colors make him look down right pasty.
On the personality front, I find Damon fun to watch but Stefan is my choice of BF by a landslide.

I read that you were gonna hop right down to the S2 premiere and went NOOOOO! I dunno a big part of the appeal of this show is the twists and you are gonna pretty much be spoilt for every single one in S1 and most of the tension in S2 is built off stuff that has accumulated from S1 already. But hey man, whatever works for you and since you read the books and have background to the show it's not like you will be lost. W/e makes you decide TVD is worth while is cool. But I do feel bad you wont get the joy of being surprised by things and or having your expectations subverted.

Yes, I love it. The pilot set the tone for what I expect in this series. Kick-ass women, fun spy drama and wow Shane West pulled it off because I kept thinking of A Walk to Remember when I heard that he was casted.

About VD, my friend says the premier eps good. I have seen season 1, but only because my brother and sisters watch it too. I would shelve this under series-I-would-not-watch-on-my-own. As a whole, though I am not emotionally invested. I admit, the writers are good. They're not afraid to kill the characters I like!

I love that show, and I was expecting "Nikita" would be a frou-frou version of it. I haven't seen the new pilot, but now I might have to check it out.

I watched the new Nikita last night. I still go for Peta Wilson's Nikita over Maggie Q. Peta Wilso has a more athletic but still quite sexy body which is for me more believable as someone who had gone through a lot of physical stuff training. Maggie is on the thin side, more like a model.
