My favorite OTPs

dangermousieI decided to list (yes, once again, list obsessive) my Top 10 favorite OTPs and the reasons why. Because? Why not. No order. You'll notice they all have one thing in common. Angst. That, and with the exception of two, they are from series (TV, books, movie). Because I like getting to know them more. They are all canon, because I am a canon whore.

1 Francis Crawford of Lymond and Philippa Sommerville from Lymond Chronicles. They are my OTP to rule them all. Beautiful, dysfunctional, heartbreaking and just...perfect. Lymond is my favorite hero, and Philippa my favorite heroine, and when you put the two together...ahhhh. He actually finds happiness with her, and peace, and she finds a whole world she would have never entered otherwise. And because the ending of Checkmate makes me cry. And hey, it's strictly canon.
2 John Crichton & Aeryn Sun from "Farscape." My second most favorite ship. Because loving her messes him up to near dysfunctional levels, but being loved back by her heals him. And because he was going to give up his soul to save her, and she would gladly return the favor.
3 Mal Reynolds & Inara Serra from "Firefly." Guuuh. My newest and shiniest. I would usually not have an OTP after only 14 episodes (which is why Kara/Lee is not on the list), but there is always an exception to every rule. Mainly because she doesn't want to love but does, and ditto for him. And because things are so messed up between them, but I can see it working out and then she would actually get to feel love, as opposed to simulate it, and he would have some more meaning and joy in his life than hardscrabble existence. Because they hurt each other and love each other at the same time and it's just perfect.
4 Buffy Sommers & "I don't need no stinkin' last name" Angel. Because talking about doomed? We got a Vampire Slayer and a Vampire with a Cursed Soul. We got "they can never make love" and we got "she will love him even after he turned into a monster and terrorized and tortured her friends" and we got "he will love her even after she sent him to hell." One of the earliest eps I ever saw was S3's ep where he came back from centuries of hell, and the first word out of his mouth was "Buffy." I was a goner for this ship right there and then.
5 Earl Thorfinn & Groa from "King Hereafter." Because they are passionate, and noble and complex and doomed. And hey, they use words like "befind."
6 Aragorn & Arwen from "Lord of the Rings." Well, he has loved her for 20 years before she even noticed him. And she is going to give up her immortality for him. And it's all impossibly star-crossed and doomed even in its happy ending and in the movies poor Aragorn needs all the nice he can get.
7 Padme & Anakin from "Star Wars." Because it's completely forbidden, and it wrecks both of them and the galaxy into the bargain. And because for an angst whore like me, this is pretty much what the doctor ordered.
8 Walter "Ramses" Emerson & Nefret Forth from the Amelia Peabody series. Talk about loving long and silently angst. He has loved her ever since he first saw her when he was a kid. He's continued to do so, hiding it all under a phlegmatic mask, and she treats him as her brother (angst!burn). And when she finally realizes her feelings and they consummate their love, something horrible happens the very next morning that almost separates them forever and it's all so angsty and snarky and perfect.
9 Lord Peter Wimsey & Harriet Vane from Dorothy L. Sayers' Lord Peter series. She is a murder defendant, he is a detective who saves her. Not to mention he is a British aristocrat who is still somewhat shellshocked from the War. But she is still scarred from her previous relationship and hates to love out of gratitude, and...come on, just read the books.
10 Robert Lokamp & Patricia from E.M. Remarque's "Three Comrades." My favorite novel ever. He is a disillusioned World War I veteran who has nothing to live for until he meets Pat, a mysterious woman with whom he has a passionate affair and finds happiness at last. But, this being Remarque, happiness is never lasting, and it's only then you realize how much they love each other and what a devastation the ending of the book is.
