The sad thing is I've been reading about Mother/Son relationships in Japan and that obsessive relationship is actually quite common. We've been reading The Doctor's Wife in class and the mother in that tries to stop her son even having his wedding night with his bride (who she chose!). Apparently incest between mother and son is the most common form of incest in Japan, completely different to almost all other countries! (Geez, that sounds incredible gross)
Plus the bath scene before, supposedly in traditional families it is quite common for sons to bath with their mothers and daughters with their fathers until they are quite old, so I guess for the Japanese it's not all that incestuous
