On the amazon board for Acheron, I literally LOLed when I read someone say this:

I'm nervous about reading Ash's backstory since I really don't care to read nearly 500 pages of his suffering while at the same time having to service Artie sexually.

Honey, that, in a nutshell, is basically why I want to read the book. Plus the possibility of branding irons :D What this says about me is probably problematic, but shmoopy definitely takes a backseat for me with those books :)

Also, people are seriously and dedicatedly debating/discussing the virgin (or not) status of the guy's heroine.

Oh, fannish boards of all stripes, never change!

Pft. It's a romance novel. I highly doubt he'll be servicving Artie much in the main story, unless she somehow gets turned into his Twoo Wuv.

Remember, in romance novel land, only virgins are worthwhile. If she had sex before, it couldn't be that great

Heee. Apparently most of the book is backstory though, as opposed to main lurve story, so bets on servicing or not are off :)

Ah. Well, my bet is on there suddenly being a reason not to once he meets Twoo Wuv. There always is. If she gets away with not cutting that off, I'll be surprised.

I admit that I'm having trouble warming up to the idea of the book, though. To say the last few in the series I read left me lukewarm is an understatement(though there was one of them that I would have really loved if it hadn't...well, been a romance novel.) And the first Dream Hunters book pissed me off so much that I almost up and listed the whole series on ebay right then.

I am sure that is the case, but since the bulk of the book is before he meets the gal, that is what I am more interested in. I mainly want to read it for the torture and the angst the backstory. If the romance is nice, it's a bonus, but not a necessary one.

If she gets away with not cutting that off, I'll be surprised.

Heee. I know some canons that happens in Farscape S4 misery and ways to mess up Crichton even more, but I'd be surprised if they ever let that happen in a romance novel.

I don't care for the Dream Hunters books. They might be amoral or what not, but the bigger sin is they are boring.

[livejournal.com profile] keepaofthecheez got her hands on Acheron early though, and she likes it so far.

Ah yes, this came out here on Friday. About two thirds of it is his past, then the rest of the book is the present- plenty of time for servicing;-)

You have just made me very happy. Though possibly if I had any shame, I'd hide in a dark corner now. Since I don't though...

No fair, you got it earlier than us!

Well, in the one I read, he was amoral, but also a would be rapist who almost killed the heroine trying to get her to have sex with him. And it was also boring on top of that. And committed the "heroine must devote life to fulfilling father's dream even though he treated her like garbage and she has no reason to, except daddy is always right" sin. Only a couple of the supporting characters made it moderately worthwhile, and there's more of one in the other books.

I think anyone who reads these books for romance is getting cheated, though. There's only been one decent romance, and one other where I could get into the idea of them, if it wasn't a romance novel.

Really? I liked most of the Dark Hunter romances well enough, but then I am hardly a romance novel reader (Kenyon and Veryan are basically the only ones I consistently read. other than that, it's probably a book every three years) so am not sure what a 'typical' romance reader looks for.

What's the decent romance? Is it the Zarek one? And whar's the other one which would be cool if it wasn't a romance?

Yup, Zarek. The one with Danger and whats-his-name...Ash's buddy who (I think) judges the Hunters is the other. In a non-romance novel where they were the pairing but it wasn't the focus, I'd probably be all over them, but I couldn't believe they were utterly in love in the story as written. Which is really the problem I have with most of them...I can believe that they like each other and it may eventually be more with some, but the stories don't remotely sell me on eternal, life changing love, which is what they're portrayed as.

For the most part, the partners strike me as ill-matched. Valerius/Tabitha is likely the worst of the lot(which is a pity, as he's likely my favorite character in the whole thing after Zarek) though Sunshine/Talon(or was it Wulf? I think Talon...) was also grating. Mostly, she seems to be randomly tossing stereotyped characters at each other, based more on character type popularity than the actual characters, and doing insta-lust=insta-love even more heavily than most writers do. The Were Hunter romances have worked better for me so far, but the mythologies and characters there aren't as interesting.

I don't care for Valerius at all (not my fictional type) but I wouldn't inflict Tabitha even on him. I liked the rest though.

I think every romance I ever read relied a bit on instalove. That's why they are romances and not deep literature :)
