Can We Get Married episode 1 - short version: adorableness with a side of annoying secondaries

I confess I would have not checked out Can We Get Married (crazy Mom tries to get daughters married off rich, upset her youngest chooses a regular salaryman - that set-up is not my thing) except for two things:

1. It's on jTBC and I've been liking a lot of the cable dramas I've seen
2. Sung Joon (Shut Up Flower Boy Band) and Jung So Min (Playful Kiss) play the leads - the salaryman and the youngest daughter. I adore both of them separately and the thought of them together just fills me with so much glee, I couldn't pass up this chance to watch them. (Also, for once, an age-appropriate pairing! I was wondering if under-25 actresses were a dying breed).

I have just finished the first episode and overall, I really enjoyed it.

* Sung Joon and Jung So Min are awesome in their roles and have ridiculous amounts of chemistry. Plus, their characters just feel real and flawed and adorable and guuuuh. I could watch them forever. For some reason I keep seeing this a twdrama with Ariel Lin in JSM's role and Bolin Chen in Sung Joon's (yes, I have In Time With You hangover).
* The directing is assured (though cuts to flashbacks without signalling are a bit of a hiccup) and the cinematography is crisp.
* It's on cable, so there are twdrama-level makeouts.
* This is a rare drama where I feel like I could run into these people on the street or have them as coworkers. Especially Jung So Min and her friend - I have a feeling they could have been some of my 20-something friends...
* I really like Jung So Min's friend, whose name escapes me at the moment. She is awesome.
* The drama seems to avoid cliche 'oooh, misunderstanding' possibilities - people behave in sane fashion.
* I like Jung So Min's aunt and Sung Joon's family.
* Did I mention make-outs? With Jung So Min and Sung Joon?

* I hate an awful lot of characters - I want to strangle Jung So Min's mother. I think she is supposed to be funny, but I find her so irritating, I stick the volume on mute whenever she appears. If I could, I'd minimize her role as much as I could. Ugh. Nails on chalkboard.
* I really hate friend's (ex?) boyfriend. He's hunky as hell (looks like a younger Kim Rae Won, mmmm) and I have a lot of goodwill for the actor (who played Yoona's suitor in Love Rain), plus his makeout scenes are epic, but that character is such a douchebag (in relationships - he is actually a pretty good friend for Sung Joon)! I want him to be kidnapped by hoodlums from May Queen and beaten half to death. I am pretty sure the drama is going to get him and friend back together but they will have to work hard on making me OK with it.
* Oldest sister and her horrid marriage. Feels like it belongs in a much darker, drearier drama. It's well done and acted but I want sugary cuteness not two miserable people being miserable together.

VERDICT: I am keeping this puppy but I really hope they cut down on Mom and oldest sister, and make the sexy douchebag grovel. Preferably shirtless.

(Hey, I said makeouts. Do you need evidence? I have evidence!)

The proposal! And look at that kissing! And how happy they are! Ah, cable, I love you!

Look how happy he is about getting engaged. Awwwwwww!

Douchebag and friend. I was all for the makeout, but then they get into fighting about commitment and he tells her if she wants to get married, he isn't going for it, also there is the whole thing where he says he doesn't like it when she is weak and basically, jeeeeeerk! If there ever was a one-night-stand material and no more, that is it.

I want Sung Joon's room:

Flashback how JSM got Sung Joon to propose - she told him if he didn't want to get married, she was out. That's kind of realistic...

For the Sung Joon fangirls...

That was so refreshing, JSM not jumping to conclusions...

It really doesn't help that Sung Joon eerily resembles Bolin Chen.
And Jung So Min does have the girl-next-door vibe a la Ariel Lin (but she mostly looks like Yoon Eun Hye).
OK, I was even (pleasantly) surprised that they are an age appropriate pairing. Somethin' is wrong with Kdrama pairing these days.

She does look a lot like a younger YEH - maybe it's those adorable teeth and the shape of the facr?

It's sad that I get pleasantly shocked to see a young actor paired with a young actress. That's not right.

I skimmed it raw then watched again when Dramafever got subs. So funny when his chef friend says "dessert is killer" when you know what's coming. They are too cute as a couple. And I agree, very realistic.

I am watching 2 now and it's even cuter. I am so glad I found a breezy drama to love.

i dont know with you guys.but for me,i fvcking love this pairing.never thought that they will be a couple on screen.i thought that i will feel awkward watching this two since im not very familiar with the character, but im wrong.the 1st ep was already catch my heart.they seems like a couple who dated for 3 yers.goshh!!and the kiss, thanks cable drama.love you!!for me,this drama is very interesting and make me as a viewer excited to watch the another ep.ep 2 was allready out but no sub and again,,gahh,,i dont know, maybe i just fall in love with this drama.they were too sweet and i also like the other couple like dong bi and ki joong.i hope this drama will be a success :)

Just watched ep.2 which i think is even better than ep.1. They have such a great chemistry and the relationship is so realistic and i love the way she challenges her mum. As for the elder sister, i mean what do you expect from a man who cheated on his wife with you...I feel sorry for DB(the friend) i do understand why she loves that jerk... Sung Joon is too cute. Am in love with this drama, it just has a different vibe from all the other k-dramas

[identity profile] dangermousie.livejournal.com 2012-11-04 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I am about to watch ep 2. So excited.

Re: older sister. I agree. There's a saying 'if he cheats with you, he will cheat on you' and their relationship is a living proof.

I too can see why the friend loves the jerk (he IS scrumptuous) - it's realistic even if it drives me nuts.

It all feels very indie.

And SJ/JSM are so precious together.

Mousie you already finished ITWY how was it? Jung Soo Min is such a cutie she's indeed a younger version of YEH they could play sisters or something.

[identity profile] dangermousie.livejournal.com 2012-11-04 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
It was pitch-perfect throughout. I plan to do a rewatch at a slower speed so I can actually post impressions and caps. One of my all-time favorite dramas.

[identity profile] algelic.livejournal.com 2012-11-04 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Hooray! I kept suggesting this drama to you and I'm so happy to see you checked it out!

I have good news for you: the story really moves forward with episode 2 and pretty much all the things you didn't like actually change! Yay!

When I first watched the teaser for this drama, I became instantly obsessed. Urgh, I just loooooove Jung So Min and Sung Joon together!! <3 they're great separately, but they spontaneously combust together!

I agree with everything you said. The characters are realistic and flawed. I love how this dramas "heroine" (Jung So Min) is so different from other dramas' heroines. Sure, she can be a little bitchy, but she knows what she wants and how to get it. She's rational, thinks things over before coming to any conclusions, I love her!

[identity profile] dangermousie.livejournal.com 2012-11-04 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
It's adorable. I am surprised because you know how picky I get with romcoms.

[identity profile] algelic.livejournal.com 2012-11-04 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, maybe I spoke too soon. The last part of episode 2 wasn't so pleasant.

Oh! Mousie, I started watching another new drama called "Ooku: Arikoto Iemitsu Hen" starring Masato Sakai and Mikako Tabe. It seems like a historical drama, but it's actually based on a manga about some reverse harem in ancient Japan. It's serious and dramatic, but very very good. One of the main characters barely shows up in the first 2 episodes but after episode 3 this turns into some epic tragic romance story. --- I've never liked anything even remotely similar to this drama, but this one got me really obsessed. You're a sageuk fan, so this will probably fit your interests. CHECK IT OUT!

I couldn't find a good trailer to show you (there probably isn't one). This one at least shows the drama's amazing theme song.

PS: There are dozens of Jdramas and Jmovies named Ooku ~this or that~. Each of them is a different story with different characters. Apparently the Japanese audience really likes stories about the Emperor's harem. After this specific drama I mentioned they'll release a movie sequel to the story... but with a different lead actress.

Yup, well Ooku was a fascinating place. No man except the Shogun was allowed inside and the door to the inner palace was always locked even the guards to the palace were women.
This is based on a manga by author Yoshinaga Fumi, Iemitsu is based on vol. 2-3 and a movie was made of volume 1 a few years back and a nother one will come out in december with Sakai Masato and Kanno Miho about Shogun Tsunayoshi often referred as the dog shogun .
Arikoto really existed, of course the real Arikoto was a woman, a Buddhist nun at Keiko-in who entered the Ooku after Lady Kasuga spotted her (after Kasuga's death she took over that position)

That jdrama really doesn't look like my thing (the production values! I can put up with whatever production values in modern dramas but for period ones I get picky). Plus, I think I've just given up jdramas entirely. It would have made a fun anime though...

I watched ep one and enjoyed it, a very very positive surprise.
I like Sung Joon but I have to admit I found his rocker attitude in SUFBB somehow more attractive (the lollipop eating and the awesome hair)
The relationships are far more realistically portrayed.
Dong Bi is the friend with douche boyfriend, the actress is awesome she was in a 3 parted miniseries Girl K or Killer K where she basically kicks ass (teenage assasin)
sadly there are guys like that when one part want commitment then they suddenly want out.

[identity profile] dangermousie.livejournal.com 2012-11-04 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I dug his rocker more too, but that is because SUFBB is one of my all time fave dramas and his character there was beyond love. But I like him here too - he is going on the list of young actors to watch, for me :)

I kept meaning to watch Killer Girl K but haven't been in the mood.

Yeah, her relationship with her quasi-bf is sadly realistic.
