Shippy cornucopia: Gisaeng, Can You Hear My Heart and Best Love
This post is basically a giant cap dump with some thoughts thrown in. Spoilers for New Tales of the Gisaeng through ep 36, Can You Hear My Heart ep 14, and Best Love through ep 6.
Despite the angst looming on the horizon - Damo's father predictably kicked him out and froze all his assets (including his grandparents' inheritance and money he earned as a salary - wtf, how does that work?) what struck me about eps 35-36 was how giddy the OTP was - that loooong stretch of misery is over (Daddy's disapproval and lack of money is peanuts compared to what they went through. Both are able-bodied and educated, they won't starve. Saran is used to poverty and Damo has shown that neither cramped liing conditions nor hard work bother him) and they are back to their teasing, adjusted selves. I especially loved Saran's treatment of Damo's father - she's respectful and understands his point, but she basically tells him she is never giving Damo up unless Damo gives her up first because she already hit rock bottom before and thus his threats do not scare her so she will hold on to her happiness whatever happens. Honestly, the OTP is just so sane! The best thing is they continue to be so realistic - I honestly can see them passing me on the street. And I am impressed how Writer Im made the pairing of a gisaeng and an aristocrat seem so inevitable and how I honestly believe in "neither would be able to live without the other" as the bare truth. And speaking of truth, I love how they tell each other everything - from past transgressions, to what they feel, and what is happening (no idiotic 'keeping secrets for other person's good'). My favorite little bit was when Daddy was all 'you can't eat here - eat elsewhere' so Damo calmly piled his plate and sat on the floor and kept munching while trying to change Daddy's mind re: Saran. I don't know, that matter-of-fact oddball reaction is so Damo.
I continue to adore CYHMH which is reminding me of Spring Waltz more and more. And Dong Joo and Woori's hopeful, tentative relationship is my favorite thing about the drama. I especially loved that gorgeous midnight date at the zoo - at one of the worst times of his life, when he finds out he's betrayed both by his mother and the man he views as his brother, what does he do but seek out Woori and somehow with her, they transcend everything for such a joyous, magical, madcap night.

That sequence is so heartbreaking - of course he's terrified of the dark. (Ugh, die, his evil mother for later throwing it in his face).
They are so perfect together. No matter how dark things get, their scenes together are shot in this pure, gorgeous light and you can just feel happiness pouring off the screen.
Anyone else getting Spring Waltz flashbacks?
I continue to be amused by BL but I find myself in the odd position of being completely and utterly uninvested emotionally - Jin and AJ get together? Cool. They don't? Also cool. A rabid dog bites them and they perish? Sure. They just don't feel like real people to me and that is the key - however insane the set-up and unlikely the situations, I have to feel that the people themselves in that set-up and situations are real. And honestly, Dokko Jin is a cartoon and, while AJ isn't, she isn't very real either. Plus, the chemistry is lacking IMO (compare to the crazy chemistry with secondary guy/secondary girl - I find myself wishing the drama was about them instead). BL makes me laugh so I keep watching it, but if my roster gets any busier, quite frankly it will be the one to go. Maybe k-romcoms and me are a lost cause after all...

CYHMH: Not following, but as I was skimming through your caps, I was struck by how KJW manages to be the pretties in any single cast, and that's after army service. Never change, dude.

I hate Damo's dad mainly for the way he treats Damo's mom. It's amazing Damo didn't turn into an entitled emotional abuser, with that example in front of him.

I like to think Damo was largely raised by his mom and grandma, which, going by stuff he says in this week's episodes, seems to be more or less true.

but i totally get what you mean about the lack of investment. jin's too immature for me to care yet and aj's too well-adjusted (or cynical) and non-invested herself at this point for me to feel that she'll be too majorly heartbroken by anything. the only one i'm somewhat worried for is secondary male lead. (on a side note, i doubt you'll like lie to me at all, if you eventually decide to take it up, because that show's been a major snooze fest emotional investment wise.)

I mean, the kiss was cute itself... but seeing Dong Joo go home and be so affected by it, holding a hand to his heart... SO SWEET! And then both of them tell Dad that they're sleepy! XD
