Absolutely. I cannot imagine how John would have turned out if he didn't have Aeryn. His humanity would have been lost much much earlier. In fact the Unchartereds would have had either one mean psychopath on their hands or a very dead scientific astronaut.
But it is painful to watch. John looked so young in season one. I love S1 John, his wide-eyed wonder, his belief of good even in the most hideous creature. In later seasons this care-free, inocent John only comes out with Aeryn and the rest of the Moya crew, but never again with any of their adversaries or allies they make post the Gammak Base incident.
