Apparently NBC (or is it Fox? I am blanking on which channel it was on) wanted M/A (not sure as an OTP or a part of a triangle) and Cameron et al wanted M/L. Cameron had his way, and then it got cancelled to make way for Firefly. The official books are M/L all the way :P (They aren't well written but an obsessive like me bought them and read them).
I do think they were going at least in the direction of Logan assuming M/A. I rememeber Max lying to him that she was with Alec (OMG! The angst! That OTP had more angst than almost any other except John/Aeryn and possibly Max/Liz and Buffy/Angel.)
Gosh, Alec was so not Max's type. He was sort of like a younger irresponsible version of Max. I could in other circs see her with Zack but not Alec. Alec? I think Max was too controlling for him (it actually worked really well with Max and Logan because of the somewhat present age difference and their different strengths and backgrounds. They couldn't boss each other).
Zack was so wonderfully, obsessively screwed up and devoted
Guuuuh. The poor guy. He was just so all sorts of awesome. It's all that control and those incredibly strong emotions undreneath that he can't help but help? And all that nobility? GUUUUUUUH. I hope he found happiness but I found the end of that Zack S2 ep so bittersweet. Because he will live, but so much of what made him the person he was: the ncredible strength, the past, the leadership, the feelings (painful or not) are gone and he doesn't remember it. When he asks Max (looking a little lost) if he knows her? I just BAWLED.
