And Preity had the relatively small, usually thankless role as the object of both men’s affection, a good wife and mother, but she was sparkling and real and AWWWW.
I was thinking about this during the movie, and I agree completely. (Hee, we totally should have done our meta thing on the ride home, but directions, and I don't know about you, but I was just laid out flat in amazement with no real coherency at that point.) The movie really, really hinges on the audience's understanding of Suhan's unquenchable love for Priya, and it might have been difficult to get that across when she's such an "observed" (and not interacted-with) character for the entire first half. But Preity has this amazing and truly unique ability for subtly in her acting -- even without much dialogue, she communicated beautifully to the audience the sense of a woman who was guarded but warm, a loving mother and kind friend who was (for reasons that became clear) just not as happy as one would expect. And how much did I love her character in college? So, so much. I mean, just the shot where she's blowing bubblegum in Chem class and ignoring Akshay had me cracking up. Preity's amazing.
I completely missed the change in Suhan's interacting with kids! Wow, see, this is why I need to see it again. ;)
Re: letters, btw. I love the scene where Akshay actually gives Preity all of Salman’s letters that she never got. And she starts flipping though them and crying and Akshay says a few nice things about Salman and she starts crying harder and asks him to keep talking because no one in her family ever said nice things about him. Awwww.
I will admit I can be a complete shmoopy sucker, but this scene nearly had me in tears. It just brought home for me what it must have been like for Priya -- two years spent in self-doubt about her relationship with the man she's loved for years. I mean, she had to wonder if he was really the person she thought he was or if she was just deluding herself. But her family hated him, and he had appeared to have abandoned her... wow, can you imagine? Two years wondering if you'd loved someone who never really existed?
Which really brings home what you said also about Akshay's character. Priya was kind of... not the reversal of his situation, but the response to it. Priya was wondering all that time if she was in love with the dream of Suhan, the cool college guy, the rebel she eloped with, etc. But their situation proves that she really did love him, not his image or the fun they had together, because she feel in love him again through Akshay, and even before that never "got over" their estrangement or quit hoping for him.
