I've been watching this drama on youtube, but yes, the scenes are sooo beautiful, I wish I had them in HD! Please do share if you find a good source. The leaked episodes is only up till 10 (I think 11 and 12 airs on tv tomorrow), so I'm really getting the withdrawal syndromes. =X
"The characters feel like period people with period people values and behaviors, not modern people in period clothes." BINGO! This, especially after I suffered 30 episodes (yes, I endured till 30!!) of Huan Zhu Ge Ge remake, makes BBJX all the better.
I think you'll really like this, seeing how you seem to enjoy some tragedy (like your FWC obssession). Seems like no one gets any happily ever after in this show.
SPOILERS BELOW, PLEASE SKIP IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW ABOUT EIGHT AND RUOLAN'S PAST YET. . . . (Note that the following is based on my perception of what happened) As for Ruolan and Eight, I think Ruolan was a symbolism of freedom. The laughter he heard from her made him fall for her at first sight. The genuine laughter when she was with her beloved stood out from all the half-hearted laughters often heard in the palace. And so he was overjoyed when he found out that the Emperor was going to bestow marriage upon him and Ruolan. But that marriage stole Ruolan's love from her, and so the person Eight found he got married to was no longer the person he fell for. Yet, they were married. Eight wondered about the difference between who he saw and who he married. So, he sent people to check up her past, and that led to the death of Ruolan's true love. She got really upset and had a miscarriage. That, on top of the guy's death, casted a shadow over the couple. Guilt? Respect? I don't know what's making Eight so devoted to Ruolan...Perhaps more of respect for their marriage, because although he got very angry with his first wife over Ruoxi, he still forgave her and comforted her saying that she will forever be his first wife, no matter what she does. . . . . END OF SPOILER.
I think Ten's marriage had a huge impact on Ruoxi. We can see her behaving more restrained after that incident. And she seemed more resigned to fate even. Love love love Ten's acting in that scene at the palace.
Me too, I like how BBJX portrayed the princes are brothers, in a way Gong never did. After that short birthday celebration (for Ten)/drinking session at Eight's residence, I got a little teary eyed, because I knew they would fall out and fight each other to death pretty soon.
