I used Corinne because it was probably the earliest novel example of this (it was written in 18th century).

Madame de Stael's novel is about an Italian woman, Corinne, who has an affair with an English aristocrat, who eventually marries someone else as more suitable. Eventually, Corinne sort of wastes and dies because she was miserable she couldn't have him. It was viewed as very romantic.

That sort of set-up drives me nuts and it seems BBJX has it.
