In case you ever wondered why I have such an allergy to spangles and bands with huge performance apparati and floor shows. And why I could never get into it.

This below is the style of performance (for songs) I grew up with:

This is one of my favorite songs, but as you notice, they are wearing evening wear and just standing on the stage and singing.

I mean, when I left (then) USSR, Alla Pugacheva was about the biggest 'floor show' there was, with her steam machines and poodle hair and it was all relatively new. The above was still the most common. Add to it that my parents didn't grow up with any floor show, not even the meagre ones of the very late 80s, so their preferences for watching were solely above...

So yeah, every time I see the spangles and dancing choruses in e.g. jpop, I kinda go 'whaaaaaa?'

Youtube is the best thing ever! I just found the title song of Phantom of the Opera in Russian! Performed at a concert by two Russian pop singers (I guess that would be the term) at a concert. And one of them is Alexandr Malinin, who I am unhip enough to really really love.

The phaaaaantom of the opera is here...in Russian )

OMG! Further cross-culture shock. Muslim Magomayev singing 'Love Story' in English! (His 60s song 'Beauty Queen' is one my faves):

Song here )

In case you are wondering, I found Malinin singing his normal stuff on youtube. It's awesome.

Alexandr Malinin )

And since I am on a Russian song kick, here are some more songs, sung by Lev Leshenko, 1970s (???) singer. I am old-fashioned so I really like them as I grew up around them. Plus, I have a huge thing for WWII songs and some of them are.

Songs here )

Oh God, I love Soviet songs. I can't help it. I just got a whole bunch of burned CDs of them.

More here, I'll be ETAing them for a while )

One of my favorite songs 'Prekrasnoye dalyoko' from the movie 'Visitoress (yeah, it's the feminine of visitor' from the future' based on a novel by a famous Russian YY and adul scifi author Kir Bulyichev. Gosh, I still love him, and I loved the movie and the song (the boy lead in this one gets tortured to protect the girl. Are we sensing a pattern in my fictional boyfriends from childhood.) I still sing this song all the time, and I remember singing it from childhood. I have so many associations with it and even my husband recognizes it. And they played it at our wedding.

Song here )

Not a Soviet but a modern MV. I really like it.
