Is that enough makjangs in there? Nope, not nearly enough.

Behold best lit suicide attempt ever:

I have watched the first ten minutes of Flames of Desire and oh my...it was a cross between a really emo kpop music video, a kdrama parody from MadTV, and a new drama from the writer of Temptation of Wife if she was on crack.

I am afraid I giggled throughout, whether at Evil Stepmom going all Jocasta on her Winsome Stepson or the confrontation between Evil Stepmom and Messed-Up Actress who wants to marry Winsome Stepson not for love but to piss off Evil Stepmom complete with overdramatic music, exclamations of "I want you to die" and "he is an angel" plus color-coordinated candles.

Within the first ten minutes we already had birth secrets - Messed-Up Actress is Evil Stepmom's biological daughter (yes, that makes the OTP stepsiblings) but that doesn't seem to stop Evil Stepmom for rooting for Winsome Stepson instead of her own kid. Yes, there is a dramatic suicide. No, make it DRAMATIC SUICIDE - with Messed-Up Actress swallowing a whole bunch of pills, wearing a bright red dress, color-coordinating and lighting about a million candles, and having a conversation with Evil Stepmom only to keel over in the middle.

This drama already begs numerous questions - if Messed-Up Actress thinks Winsome Stepson is such an angel, why is she potentially leaving her body for him to find? Why is Evil Stepmom clutching her and crying instead of trying to call the ambulance? Would I ever be able to believe that Yoo Seung Ho, who looks all of 12, is man enough to set these two ladies fighting this way? (Seriously, every time I saw YSH I just wanted to groan - couldn't they cast someone more age-appropriate? He looks like he needs a pb&j sandwich and crayons, instead of sex goddess Seo Woo). Does anyone really dramatically smash violins on the floor? Why is everyone overacting in a way that puts pantomime to shame and why should I care about the bizarre sturm and drang when I am yet to know who any of these people are? And why am I still watching this horrific trainwreck?

But, as with a true trainwreck, I cannot look away and will keep up at least for a bit. This one is full-throttle insane and so how could I ever resist?

This HAS to be the writer's parody on makjang. It has to be. Because the alternative - that someone wrote this with a straight face - is too terrifying to contemplate.

I promised to get to all the replies this weekend. I know I am behind :)

1. Newer Daemul trailer. How wonderful does it look? I believe it starts next week. I was worried earlier that they changed Kwon Sang Woo's character from the gigolo he was in the manga but thankfully no. Hooray. Some politics, some tough tough smart women, some sexy men, what more can you want?

2. Flames of Jailbait Desire started today. I am very eager to check it out especially as it seems to lack that dreaded monster of lengthy revenge dramas - childhood eps. Apparently the adults are there from the first episode. It does have some striking posters.

With these two, Runaway, Sungkyunkwan Scandal, Giant, Gloria, and Playful Kiss, there is a busy busy slate of current dramas waiting for me. Mmmmmmm.

BUT - did you notice something missing this year? I found 2010 a pretty good kdrama year but with one thing missing - while there were a number of dramas whose OTPs I went rabid for (Chuno, Sungkyunkwan Scandal, Giant etc), there has not been a single romantic drama out since winter. Not a single one! I am not talking about romcoms, which are always a dime a dozen (and often not my thing), I am talking about a go-for-broke, angsty, larger than life romance - the way Snow Queen or Robbers or Spring Waltz or A Love to Kill were. All the OTPs I listed came from dramas in other genres - dramas which are primarily revenge sagas, or period stories, or thrillers first. The last proper romantic melodrama we had was a lovely, low-key Will It Snow on Christmas and that ended in the winter! We are way overdue for another one, but of all the dramas I am looking forward to - Athena, Daemul, Runaway - none qualify. The closest we come is November's Secret Garden (but with its body-swapping premise, I think it is likely to be more of a romcom or oddball drama than an angsty romance I require) and January's My Princess which seems, with its storyline of hidden royalty inheritor, to be more of a light romcom. Boooo! I hoped Cinderella Unni would have been the one but what an all-around disappointment that proved to be.

Look what I found at [livejournal.com profile] ockoala's blog:

Yoo Seung Ho/Seo Woo promo still from the upcoming Flames of Ambition (go to ockoala's blog for a trailer).

For some reason, this is screaming Gossip Girl to me. But even though I continue to be boggled by the casting of 17-yr-old YSH (What, they couldn't cast Jung Il Woo? Kim Bum? Lee Min Ho? Scads of other 20-something actors? ) as not just a romantic lead (he could plausibly be one in a highschool story) but someone playing a 21-yr-old husband, the very bizarreness of the casting ensures I'll probably tune in for the first couple of eps to check out the trainwreck.

This is really going to be a platonic marriage though - I really doubt the censors will allow them to do more than hug gingerly, due to the age issues. Seriously, trainwreck.
