Ep 6 of Alhambra is the best yet

You know, the story could be percieved as a fantasy take on mental illness really - Hyun Bin hears and sees things that are not there to anyone else and is driven by those “hallucinations” to extremes. Remember PSH seeing him throwing ninja stars in the shop? Only to her it looks like he does a repetitive nonsense motion with an empty hand? Or when he tells his secretary to book him a train ticket instead of a plane because he can’t get off a plane and so who knows what he would do - it’s such an achingly familiar workaround technique, where you live every day with limitations “normal” people do not have and have to learn and think about work arounds.

And his slow freak out as his sedatives wear off and full awareness returns and he can feel that growing feeling of panic over something that is not real for anyone else - it’s like a fantasy metaphor for a panic attack. I found it pretty awful that he would rather be sedated and unconscious than face that never-ending duel with the opponent bent on his death that only he can see. It’s especially terrible because he’s been shown so sharp, so in control - and to voluntarily cede all of it out of sheer, all-consuming, almost animal fear - it’s horrifying. And of course the fact that he feels guilt for killing rival (he did not know death in game = death in rl but still, he wanted revenge and look what it got him) and now he has to face the man he killed, the man he feels guilty for killing, with the wounds still on him, over and over and over and over again, like some sort of Banquo’s ghost, only seeking his death.

You can see all of that quiet horror in the sequence after PSH leaves for the party - his staring at her empty seat, because he viscerally associates her with safety, his desperate seeking for medicine and then alcohol but neither is available (he is going to end up an alcoholic if he makes it through - because mixing drugs and booze is not a good idea) and then as his mind wakes more and more, his getting more and more terrified, looking at her empty seat with such desperation and then hiding in the closed shower stall, sitting on the floor - it reminded me a little of It’s OK It’s Love, though obviously that was a very different drama.

The thing that strikes me is that even in the middle of all that terror, he thought of sending birthday flowers to PSH. Ahhhh.

The situation is long-term unsustainable of course - if he doesn’t die in the game, he’s gonna drink himself to death or od on pills or just lose his mind. It’s a truly horrible prognosis here.

I do definitely ship the leads now. In some ways, it’s a very “she is his angel of mercy” set up which is very Victorian but that I adore every little bit of. She is wired to take care of people, due to her family and history, and even more so because she feels obliged for that extravagant to her purchase of her hotel. There is attraction there too (and why not, he is a good-looking, well put together man, at the start) but a lot of it is I think she needs to be needed. in RL, I would tell her to stay the hell away, but in fiction, I nearly melted on the floor when he asked her to stay in his semi-delirium, utterly childlike.

And I melted when he covered her with a blanket.

If you think about it, she’s the only one who stayed by his side, everyone else left.

Also, even though the hotel purchase is now worthless (because that is not a game he is going to make money on; best case scenario he doesn’t die from it), it was worth every penny because it brought her into his orbit and so saved his life and possibly his sanity.

Anyway, this drama is awesome and I need more.

Also, the preview seems to indicate moving places got rid of Rival (is he geographically tied to a place like all NPCs?) but he cannot escape the game even in Seoul. (Which makes sense, the developer was hunted by the game in the train in another city.) Yikes.

So, ep 3 of Alhambra was gloriously confusing

I think this writer has a real interest in disparate worlds beginning to blur over - Queen In Hyun's Man, W, and now this all seem to have that in common.

I am not sure what I loved more - her little involuntary indrawn breath when he stepped in and basically protected her at the cost his privacy, his reputation, and possibly his job, knowing he would get some powerful enemies in the process. And did it deliberately, knowingly, and so utterly calm and unashamed.

Or that she was going to protect him and keep mum even if it was going to cost her reputation and possibly her company.

I love that the bad guys were (alas, temporarily) defeated by sheer, unadulterated decency.

Why you should watch Doctor Stranger if you haven't already

I remember loving the 2014 Doctor Stranger a LOT when it first came out, but it's been over four years, the details are fuzzy, and I decided to rewatch.

One episode in, it's as good as I remember. SO GOOD.

Upcoming kdramas I am interested in

Upcoming kdramas I am interested in - winter edition

Absolute Boyfriend - I loved that manga as a much much younger Mousie but both times it’s been adapted to screen (in Japan and in Taiwan), it really did not work for me. Still, maybe third time’s the charm? (Modifying the manga to make the competitor to the ahem robot a star is not really in keeping with the manga mood but whatever. Not everything can be Silver Metal Lover.) MAYBE.

Abyss - I love Park Bo Young, who can do not wrong for me after Strong Woman Do Bong Soon. The out-there premise (a beautiful woman turns hideous and a hideous man handsome) has potential. So unless they cast someone truly awful as the male lead, this is a YES.

Aseudal Chronicles - my most anticipated. Sageuk! fantasy! Pre-Joseon era! And starring Song Joong Ki, Jang Dong Gun and Kim Ji Won! What more can one need! Oh, a PD who did a lot of dramas I like. A definite yes.

Babel - it sounds like a dark drama, with investigations, familial tragedies and revenge. Park Shi Hoo is the lead which, for many, is an understandable deal breaker. But whatever he may be guilty of and however unappealing he may be in RL, he is one of k-actors I tend to enjoy watching so that’s not a deal-breaker for me. YES.

The Crowned Clown/The Man Who became King/Masquerade - I never miss a sageuk, I like Yeo Jin Goo a LOT (he seems to be following Yoo Seung Ho’s footsteps in successfully transitioning into an adult star), and the plot of a clown having to act as a king due to resemblance is amazing-sounding. YES.

Dazzling - I love Han Ji Min, and the fantasy premise of a woman who lost all her time (by I believe turning old) is fascinating, but Nam Ji Hyuk is one of the very few automatic nopes for me. He really cannot act or have on-screen charisma. Hard hard choice. This is a MAYBE.

Different Dreams - 1930s period drama starring my old school faves Lee Yo Won and Yoo Ji Tae. Im Joo Hwan is an awesome bonus. I don’t know if it’s the Mr. Sunshine effect (yes, I know it was set earlier, but it also deals with Japanese occupation of Korea) but either way, I am grateful after a long period drama drought. YES.

Haechi - Jung Il Woo is back from the military and in a sageuk and with Go Ara. Good things really do come in threes. YES.

Item - I DGAF about crime dramas but I give many many fs about Joo Ji Hoon and Jin Se Yeo’s reunion after awesomely entertaining (if bonkers) Five Fingers. YES.

Kingdom - zombies are meh, but sageuks and Joo Ji Hoon are a hell YES!

My Strange Hero - love love love Yoo Seung Ho (I have never disliked a drama of his. Yes, not even Operation Proposal) and Jo Bo Ah and I am a sucker for second chance romances. Plus, it starts this Monday and it will be great to finally have a Monday/Tuesday drama to follow again. YES.

Romance Is a Supplement - I cannot believe I am about to say this about a romance drama starring Lee Jong Suk but wtf wtf wtf! He is paired with lee Na Young, who is a decade older and looks it. That would be fine if it were billed as a noona romance, but at least from the description it looks like they are supposed to be the same age, which is insane! Unless it turns out it’s a noona romance, I think this would be barely even a MAYBE.

Spring Must Be Coming - two women swap bodies. No, it’s not a same gender Secret Garden, alas, but it still sounds awesome. I am a sucker for those fish out of water scenarios. YES.

Touch Your Heart - GIMME GIMME GIMME Reaper and Sunny’s reunion!!!! And the storyline - of a lawyer falling for his secretary who is a disgraced star in disguise trying to to get rl tips for a future role, would be awesome even without Lee Dong Wook and Yoo In Na playing the roles. But as is, eeeee!  YES.

Vagabond - the plot of a stunt double uncovering conspiracies sounds like Bollywood fun, I love Lee Seung Gi and, in the love her or hate her debate, I am on the side of loving Suzy (they were great together in Gu Family Book btw.) So YES!

When the Devil Calls Your Name - supernatural seems to be a theme lately. Jung Kyung Ho plays a man who made a deal with the devil and now must collect some souls or go to hell himself. I will watch JKH in (almost) anything after his amazing performance in Cruel City, and with the exception of the nightmare that was Missing Nine, he has not disappointed me. This is a YES.

Where Camelia Blooms - I like Gong Hyo Jin a lot but the rest of the descriptions are awfully vague and no other cast is there yet for me to eithr glee or a despair. A MAYBE.

Encounter episode 4

The thing that strikes me is that some of Jin Hyuk's emotional openness and fearlessness is a function of his age - he's young so life hasn't had too much time to mess him up and, due to his loving family, he hasn't yet had to develop a protective shell (something I am sure Soo Hyun had to develop from an early age.) But that is only a part of it - he is, by his very nature, fearless in his feeling and his expression of it. He is the kind of person who can shrug off his beloved camera getting smashed or have a whimsical adventure with a stranger - I think all the tribulations that are going to happen may make him more experienced or savvier but they will not dim his determined ability to open himself up. Underneath his cheerful demeanor, there is quite a lot of steel. He is not open and good because he's dumb, he's open and good because it is in his basic nature to be so. It's pretty clear he is no pushover, as the sequence with the minor car accident demonstrates.

Long meta and caps )

And then I had to go to bed because I rewatched some of the scenes a few too many times and an hour long ep is turning into close to three. But to look on the bright side - that means I have more of this wonderfulness to enjoy tomorrow.

So, I am falling more and more in love with Encounter

The thing that strikes me so much about Encounter's OTP is that he is so open and unguarded and explicitly emotionally vulnerable and that is what she is so drawn to, after being surrounded by cold calculating people who play games. (Her own mother!)

In contrast, there are no games - there is what you see is what you get. Not only that, but the way he lights up wheneber she responds to his overtures - it's such openness and she is not used to it. And she drinks it in as someone who has been deprived of it her whole life.

Experimenting with cuts so caps behind it )

And it's not just that - he doesn't want anything from her but her, for herself. When she is seen as a commodity, a path to power or connections, this must be an incredible change.

Experimenting with cuts so caps behind it )

And of course the fact that he's emotionally forthright and fearless and willing to put himself out there. And you can tell she yearns to take that but is terrified to. When he told her he missed her, I nearly died. They both have such expressive faces.

Experimenting with cuts so caps behind it )

PS Until I clean up my tags (I have too many and need to get rid of random ones so as not to hit the caps), I am gonna be putting the name of the drama in the Location field.

PPS Dreamwidth has a nested comment system and you can be anonymous too. So come chat about this awesome drama with me!

The thing that is so horrifying to me is that SHK’s character is not her daughter in law (and she wasn’t the one who was cheating, in the first place.) And yet “face” is so important to this old woman that she does all she can to control an ex daughter in law, one who hasn’t done anything wilder than have dinner with a man.

Does she expect her to be a nun forever while her own son whores around and while she is a single woman? They don’t even have a child in common! And this is with a woman of a powerful family - can you imagine what she would do if SHK’s family were nobodies?

And then the coup de grace, when she orders her to fire a man, i.e., end his future (who is going to hire someone fired mere days into his first job?) with the boredom and consideration one usually gives to a drivethrough order. Even less.

When you contrast it with earnest, sweet young man who is so unassuming and good guy to do this:

Well, it’s not subtle but it’s effective. I hate the old b on sight. No wonder SHK wanders around shell-shocked and half-frozen. How she emerged in any way intact from that household God only knows.

Entertainment plans for the upcoming week...

1. Respond to everyone...

2. Catch up on The King 2 Hearts eps 13-14, Love Rain 11-14 (bliss!!!) and Queen In Hyun's Man eps 5-6. I am putting aside The Equator Man to binge when it's done.

3. Clear up and post caps of eps 3-4 of QIHM - such a perfect, shippy, gorgeous drama. And Bung Do is such an amazing hero - smart, good, laid-back. Yoo Inna's heroine is wonderful and loveable too.

4. Read Cassandra Clare's latest in Mortal Instruments series, "City of Lost Souls." I eat up that series and the angsty angsty lurve between Clary and Jace with a big spoon. Though I think the premise of CoLS, in which Clary's used-to-think-he-was-her-brother-but-he-wasn't boyfriend gets possessed by her demonic-real-life-brother and there might be make-outs, reaches the levels of insanity not seen since CLAMP or Vampire Knight. Bring it on, people!

4. Start Sherrilyn Kenyon's "Born of Night," the first one in her League series. Love me some space opera, love me some romance, loved the other book in the series I read, and also met the protagonists of this one in the other book and thought they were awesome. The super-tall, super-strong invincible half-human former assassin and tiny dancer gal/daughter of a president that he rescues and who can wind him around her finger is a scenario made for me. Plus, I know Kenyon, h/c is going to be out of this world.

5. Finish Lauren Kate's "Fallen" quartet, at least the three books that are out. I am a sucker for paranormal romance YA (ummm, paranormal romance in general) and got 2/3 through this on my plane ride. Addiction! In Fallen, Luce, our teenage, sent-to-reform-school, seeing creepy visions heroine, finds out that she is one half of a super-doomed, super-punished couple - she keeps reincarnating over and over and over through the centuries only to die at the moment she and her equally punished OTP get together (he is a powerful sort-of-fallen angel and his punishment is to stay alive and remember everything only for it to happen over and over again no matter what he does). They are in their own cdrama! Only this time, she's not been baptized or brought up in any religion, so if she dies, that is the end, no reincarnation or anything. And a lot of supernatural bad guys are interested in that. On plus side, she also didn't die when they got together. Now, if she can only keep staying alive! Anyway, I love it to bits and ship the OTP. The whole thing would make a fun CW show but I am glad it's been left alone because you just know the makers would stick her with bad-boy Cam and not her OTP (see Vampire Diaries, adaptation of...).

6. Sleep. I am so jetlagged.

Time traveller's wife, Korean-style?

The long trailer for Queen In Hyun's Man (which premiered today) made me want to hyperventilate and watch this thing raw:

It looks gorgeous, romantic, twisty, and not quite like any other drama I've seen. Ahhh. I need this in my life!

Any idea if anyone subbing it? Anyone at all?

Love Rain - ep 7

No surprise that this was another gorgeous ep, though I confess wishing just a tiny smidgeon more time was spent on our young lovers (I am clearly insatiable when it comes to them).

You can tell how much Hana throws Jun off-kilter and despite his trying to fight it (not picking up her call, 'showing off' by having model shoots when she shows up, etc.), his fight is hopeless. He does all sorts of things he normally never does - apologizes, chases after her, ditches nightclubs and pick-ups. You are a goner, boy!

But I confess my favorite scene in this episode did not involve them - it was the heart-stopping last scene between In Ha and Yoon Hee, when they pass each other on the street, and who she is registers just a bit too late for him, but then he takes off running and they meet. So much emotion and longing there. While with Hana and Jun it is a start of a romance - uncertainty, prickliness, one step forward and two steps back, with In Ha and Yoon Hee it's old love denied, and it's immensely powerful.

(Caps of two gorgeous scenes with two gorgeous OTPs) )

One of the things I really love about LR is the way it shows the fall-out of a love affair gone wrong. In a lesser drama, YH and IH's unfulfilled romance would have existed in a vacuum, but it is not the case here. We don't really know much about Yoon Hee's husband and married life other than he's dead and, seeing how warm and well-adjusted Hana is, Hana's upbringing and family atmosphere must have been good. But it's different with In Ha. The fact that he could not let go of Yoon Hee, could not open up again, wrecked more than his life. I never liked Hye Jung and she certainly went into the marriage with eyes wide open - she knew In Ha loved Yoon Hee and still went for it, and that is after crazy secondary girl antics. But Hye Jung of 70s was a fun, hopeful girl even if spoiled and solipsistic. The Hye Jung of 30 years later is a (sort-of-former) alcoholic who has been robbed of any promise of her youth by incessantly yearning for and trying to manipulate the man who feels no love for her. No wonder Jun has trust issues and views romantic love with all the enthusiasm of a man finding a bug in his soup - he grew up with an emotionally distant father (that scene with Yoon Hee is the first time we see older In Ha truly there) and a manipulative, desperate mother who did not respect herself because of love and who used her son as a way to try to get her ex-husband back. Yeah.
