You know, the story could be percieved as a fantasy take on mental illness really - Hyun Bin hears and sees things that are not there to anyone else and is driven by those “hallucinations” to extremes. Remember PSH seeing him throwing ninja stars in the shop? Only to her it looks like he does a repetitive nonsense motion with an empty hand? Or when he tells his secretary to book him a train ticket instead of a plane because he can’t get off a plane and so who knows what he would do - it’s such an achingly familiar workaround technique, where you live every day with limitations “normal” people do not have and have to learn and think about work arounds.

And his slow freak out as his sedatives wear off and full awareness returns and he can feel that growing feeling of panic over something that is not real for anyone else - it’s like a fantasy metaphor for a panic attack. I found it pretty awful that he would rather be sedated and unconscious than face that never-ending duel with the opponent bent on his death that only he can see. It’s especially terrible because he’s been shown so sharp, so in control - and to voluntarily cede all of it out of sheer, all-consuming, almost animal fear - it’s horrifying. And of course the fact that he feels guilt for killing rival (he did not know death in game = death in rl but still, he wanted revenge and look what it got him) and now he has to face the man he killed, the man he feels guilty for killing, with the wounds still on him, over and over and over and over again, like some sort of Banquo’s ghost, only seeking his death.

You can see all of that quiet horror in the sequence after PSH leaves for the party - his staring at her empty seat, because he viscerally associates her with safety, his desperate seeking for medicine and then alcohol but neither is available (he is going to end up an alcoholic if he makes it through - because mixing drugs and booze is not a good idea) and then as his mind wakes more and more, his getting more and more terrified, looking at her empty seat with such desperation and then hiding in the closed shower stall, sitting on the floor - it reminded me a little of It’s OK It’s Love, though obviously that was a very different drama.

The thing that strikes me is that even in the middle of all that terror, he thought of sending birthday flowers to PSH. Ahhhh.

The situation is long-term unsustainable of course - if he doesn’t die in the game, he’s gonna drink himself to death or od on pills or just lose his mind. It’s a truly horrible prognosis here.

I do definitely ship the leads now. In some ways, it’s a very “she is his angel of mercy” set up which is very Victorian but that I adore every little bit of. She is wired to take care of people, due to her family and history, and even more so because she feels obliged for that extravagant to her purchase of her hotel. There is attraction there too (and why not, he is a good-looking, well put together man, at the start) but a lot of it is I think she needs to be needed. in RL, I would tell her to stay the hell away, but in fiction, I nearly melted on the floor when he asked her to stay in his semi-delirium, utterly childlike.

And I melted when he covered her with a blanket.

If you think about it, she’s the only one who stayed by his side, everyone else left.

Also, even though the hotel purchase is now worthless (because that is not a game he is going to make money on; best case scenario he doesn’t die from it), it was worth every penny because it brought her into his orbit and so saved his life and possibly his sanity.

Anyway, this drama is awesome and I need more.

Also, the preview seems to indicate moving places got rid of Rival (is he geographically tied to a place like all NPCs?) but he cannot escape the game even in Seoul. (Which makes sense, the developer was hunted by the game in the train in another city.) Yikes.

comments

I am not sure what I loved more - her little involuntary indrawn breath when he stepped in and basically protected her at the cost his privacy, his reputation, and possibly his job, knowing he would get some powerful enemies in the process. And did it deliberately, knowingly, and so utterly calm and unashamed.

Or that she was going to protect him and keep mum even if it was going to cost her reputation and possibly her company.

I love that the bad guys were (alas, temporarily) defeated by sheer, unadulterated decency.

( Giant caps )

comments

I remember loving the 2014 Doctor Stranger a LOT when it first came out, but it's been over four years, the details are fuzzy, and I decided to rewatch.

One episode in, it's as good as I remember. Still, maybe third time’s the charm? (Modifying the manga to make the competitor to the ahem robot a star is not really in keeping with the manga mood but whatever. Not everything can be Silver Metal Lover.) MAYBE.

Abyss - I love Park Bo Young, who can do not wrong for me after Strong Woman Do Bong Soon. Park Shi Hoo is the lead which, for many, is an understandable deal breaker. Unless it turns out it’s a noona romance, I think this would be barely even a MAYBE.

Spring Must Be Coming - two women swap bodies. Jung Kyung Ho plays a man who made a deal with the devil and now must collect some souls or go to hell himself. I will watch JKH in (almost) anything after his amazing performance in Cruel City, and with the exception of the nightmare that was Missing Nine, he has not disappointed me.
The thing that strikes me is that some of Jin Hyuk's emotional openness and fearlessness is a function of his age - he's young so life hasn't had too much time to mess him up and, due to his loving family, he hasn't yet had to develop a protective shell (something I am sure Soo Hyun had to develop from an early age.) But that is only a part of it - he is, by his very nature, fearless in his feeling and his expression of it. He is the kind of person who can shrug off his beloved camera getting smashed or have a whimsical adventure with a stranger - I think all the tribulations that are going to happen may make him more experienced or savvier but they will not dim his determined ability to open himself up. Underneath his cheerful demeanor, there is quite a lot of steel. He is not open and good because he's dumb, he's open and good because it is in his basic nature to be so. It's pretty clear he is no pushover, as the sequence with the minor car accident demonstrates.

( Long meta and caps )

And then I had to go to bed because I rewatched some of the scenes a few too many times and an hour long ep is turning into close to three. But to look on the bright side - that means I have more of this wonderfulness to enjoy tomorrow.

comments

The thing that strikes me so much about Encounter's OTP is that he is so open and unguarded and explicitly emotionally vulnerable and that is what she is so drawn to, after being surrounded by cold calculating people who play games. (Her own mother!)

In contrast, there are no games - there is what you see is what you get. Not only that, but the way he lights up wheneber she responds to his overtures - it's such openness and she is not used to it. And she drinks it in as someone who has been deprived of it her whole life.

( Experimenting with cuts so caps behind it )

And it's not just that - he doesn't want anything from her but her, for herself. When she is seen as a commodity, a path to power or connections, this must be an incredible change.

( Experimenting with cuts so caps behind it )

And of course the fact that he's emotionally forthright and fearless and willing to put himself out there. And you can tell she yearns to take that but is terrified to. When he told her he missed her, I nearly died. They both have such expressive faces.

( Experimenting with cuts so caps behind it )

PS Until I clean up my tags (I have too many and need to get rid of random ones so as not to hit the caps), I am gonna be putting the name of the drama in the Location field.

PPS Dreamwidth has a nested comment system and you can be anonymous too. And yet “face” is so important to this old woman that she does all she can to control an ex daughter in law, one who hasn’t done anything wilder than have dinner with a man.

Does she expect her to be a nun forever while her own son whores around and while she is a single woman? They don’t even have a child in common! And this is with a woman of a powerful family - can you imagine what she would do if SHK’s family were nobodies?

And then the coup de grace, when she orders her to fire a man, i.e., end his future (who is going to hire someone fired mere days into his first job?) with the boredom and consideration one usually gives to a drivethrough order. Even less.

When you contrast it with earnest, sweet young man who is so unassuming and good guy to do this:

Well, it’s not subtle but it’s effective. I hate the old b on sight. No wonder SHK wanders around shell-shocked and half-frozen. How she emerged in any way intact from that household God only knows.

comments

Can We Get Married episode 1 - short version: adorableness with a side of annoying secondaries

It's on jTBC and I've been liking a lot of the cable dramas I've seen
2. Sung Joon (Shut Up Flower Boy Band) and Jung So Min (Playful Kiss) play the leads - the salaryman and the youngest daughter. I adore both of them separately and the thought of them together just fills me with so much glee, I couldn't pass up this chance to watch them. (Also, for once, an age-appropriate pairing! I was wondering if under-25 actresses were a dying breed).

I have just finished the first episode and overall, I really enjoyed it.

THE GOOD:

* Sung Joon and Jung So Min are awesome in their roles and have ridiculous amounts of chemistry. Plus, their characters just feel real and flawed and adorable and guuuuh. I could watch them forever. For some reason I keep seeing this a twdrama with Ariel Lin in JSM's role and Bolin Chen in Sung Joon's (yes, I have In Time With You hangover).
* The directing is assured (though cuts to flashbacks without signalling are a bit of a hiccup) and the cinematography is crisp.
* It's on cable, so there are twdrama-level makeouts.
* This is a rare drama where I feel like I could run into these people on the street or have them as coworkers. Especially Jung So Min and her friend - I have a feeling they could have been some of my 20-something friends...
* I really like Jung So Min's friend, whose name escapes me at the moment. She is awesome.
* The drama seems to avoid cliche 'oooh, misunderstanding' possibilities - people behave in sane fashion.
* I like Jung So Min's aunt and Sung Joon's family.
* Did I mention make-outs? With Jung So Min and Jung Hoon?

THE BAD:

* I hate an awful lot of characters - I want to strangle Jung So Min's mother. I think she is supposed to be funny, but I find her so irritating, I stick the volume on mute whenever she appears. If I could, I'd minimize her role as much as I could. Ugh. Nails on chalkboard.
* I really hate friend's (ex?) boyfriend. He's hunky as hell (looks like a younger Kim Rae Won, mmmm) and I have a lot of goodwill for the actor (who played Yoona's suitor in Love Rain), plus his makeout scenes are epic, but that character is such a douchebag (in relationships - he is actually a pretty good friend for Sung Joon)! I want him to be kidnapped by hoodlums from May Queen and beaten half to death. I am pretty sure the drama is going to get him and friend back together but they will have to work hard on making me OK with it.
* Oldest sister and her horrid marriage. Feels like it belongs in a much darker, drearier drama. It's well done and acted but I want sugary cuteness not two miserable people being miserable together.

VERDICT: I am keeping this puppy but I really hope they cut down on Mom and oldest sister, and make the sexy douchebag grovel. Preferably shirtless.

( Hey, I said makeouts. Do you need evidence? I have evidence! )

comments

JWC trailer is as delicious as I thought it would be - crazy fights, gorgeous Uee and a general wuxia vibe. In fact, if I did not know this was a kdrama, I'd assume it was Chinese. Cha Tae Hyun is still the opposite of what I find attractive, but I can deal.

http://youtu.be/PxxjplKt8Yg

And here is the trailer for next week's I Miss You, which I need in my life asap. It looks just like the type of romantic melodrama I like and also, for the first time in my kdrama-watching experience, I find myself, much as I adore Yoon Eun Hye and Yoochun, wishing the whole drama was childhood portions.

comments

No, nothing bad happens but LR is sheer cinematic swoon and so steeped in romance, it makes me giddy.

It's impeccably shot, sheer poetry in motion (the way all of YSH dramas are. I think Spring Waltz in the most gorgeous drama I have ever seen) and it immerses you in sheer, swoony, pure romanticism. No dramas convey that perpetual swoon, that state of mind that brings back my own heady early days with Mr. Mousie, the way YSH's dramas do.

I love it - when is the last time you saw an unabashed romance on screen? But I can see why it has abysmal ratings (and why it will do well in Japan). It is precisely its old-fashioned theme and sensibIlity that appeals to me, but it is also what is dooming it in the ratings (and why Snow Queen and Spring Waltz did similarly poorly in Korea). It is a type of drama which is not in style any more.

But it is the style of drama I love. So I will treasure it all the more for its rarity and for a chance to add a new drama to this dying breed.

Proper post with caps coming when I am not on my iPhone. But I couldn't wait and wanted to gush.

comments

Are we supposed to like Yue-er? Because I lost any ability to do so when she started yelling "let go of me" to the man who was the sole thing preventing her from plunging to a gruesome and unexpected death, a man who was saving her even though she gruesomely poisoned him and he was in total agony and about to die because of it?

I mean, WTF!

Did I mention she was trying to off him for something he didn't even do, and when she learned of the fact, was there remorse, apology or even an "oops?"

Nope.

Ugh, just get off my screen!

comments

I loved it. It is probably going to become my favorite out of the three Wednesday-Thursday dramas. I like the mix of dark and grittiness and twists.

Shockingly, I am in love with the teen cast and don't even want the adults to come on but the whole story to revolve around the kids. That pretty much never happens. I dislike Jae Il but he is a fascinating character - high-strung, smart, selfishly inadequate and too aware of it. I have nothing but love for scrappy, tough, warm Sun Woo.

The vibe reminds me somewhat of Resurrection, never a bad thing.

My one complaint is the music director. He should be taken out and tranqed for his own good because the scoring of horribleness ruins many a scene. I am glad he was able to get "Classical Music's Greatest Hits" on sale, but he really doesn't need to use it at maximum volume every two minutes. He should learn from the cinematographer who is making this look to die for.

Oh, and I know I am going to ship SW and the rock girl because that was a hell of a scene

comments

So, apparently the first episode of King 2 Hearts got a 27% rating?!

That is insane. I do not remember last time a first episode got anywhere near that. Clearly, Ha Ji Won and Lee Seung Gi continue their winning streaks.

Shed no tears for Rooftop Prince, btw. It got a very solid high teens rating which would normally be a big deal but not when compared to K2H. Still, I am sure it made RP folks plenty happy.

No idea how The Equator Man did, but there probably weren't that many ratings left for it to grab. Much as I am looking forward to TEM, not surprising.

comments

Despite being unimpressed by the first episode of The Moon That Embraces the Sun, I decided to check a few more eps - everyone seemed to be so raving about it.

So, just finished episode 3 and it's official - despite the lackluster first episode, I am now enjoying this drama. It is still the fluffiest, least substance-filled sageuk I've ever seen (the only thing comparable in its cotton-candy vibe is new Huan Zhu Ge Ge. I don't need endless salt and smelting discussions a la Jumong, but something more than 'how will these cute people pair up' would be welcome, especially since the passion is absent due to the cast being in their mid-teens), but despite it all, I am hooked - I want to know what happens next and I do like pretty much every character except the hypocritical Bo Gyung.

I can't say I have iron-clad shipping preferences, but if I had to pick, I prefer Wol with the Crown Prince. Hooray, my love for canon shipping is preserved! I like the older prince just fine, but something about the hopeless, unabashed adoration Lee Hwon shows to Wol, gets me.

So, basically, not yet fully hooked, but really liking it. <strike>Oh, how I wish the rumors of Park Shi Hoo being the male lead came true. Alas...</strike>

comments

EXCUSE ME?!

I am on episode 3 of Sealed with a <strike>rapey</strike> Kiss and unless I started spontaneously hallucinating, our 'hero' (I use the term loosely) just told the heroine that if she wants him to stop bankrupting her best friend's family as some sort of "I am pissed at heroine, so I'll get to her that way" strategy, he is willing:

a. To make friend his mistress too, just as he did with heroine. Friend, he is sure, will be equally happy to save her father. And they can all move together as a threesome!!!!!
b. If she doesn't like that and wants her friend spared, he's fine, as long as in exchange heroine sleeps with some of hero's business friends who are into that type of thing.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

At this point, I am just watching out of sheer 'wtf insanity will I see in my screen next' impulse. I mean, that beats a lakorn - even in those rapey heroes don't want to prostitute the heroine to other dudes for group rape sex!!!!!!

THE HELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, yeah, I know he isn't really ruining friend's family (that is a coincidence) and doesn't really intend for heroine to sleep with others, but the FACT that he's telling her that and she (reasonably) believes he means it and he knows she believes it.

THE FUCKING FUCK!!!!! I want him to die so badly, I can feel it!!!!!

RAAAAAAAAAAAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The thing is, if they took the heroine out of the story and concentrated on hero and his in-law craziness and business manips, it would be a pretty compelling drama about a bunch of psychos trying to one-up each other - I truly enjoy those scenes. But as it is, I looooong for heroine to get together with her sweet ex, and for hero to die die die die die die die after being tortured for a month slowly.

RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE YOU FUCKING ABUSIVE PIG!!!!

ETA Why doesn't the heroine ever react by grabbing a giant knife and telling the hero as she's stabbing him "OK, freakshow, I am done being unselfish for everyone's sake. Let's see how well you torment me and my loved ones from the morgue?"

Probably because she has no standards "You treat me quite well, you never hit me" is what she drunkenly tells the hero.

WTF! Well, if that's your standard...

Good Lord.

Well, at least she calls him a psycho, that's something.

Also, I am incredibly amused that the only time he can show he loves her is when she's drunk or unconscious. I mean, carrying, smoochies, handholding and yearning gaze are better when the recipient is conscious. Yo, freakshow, perhaps she might like you better if you took her out on dates and treated her well, instead of insulting and playing mindgames with her. Just saying!

ETA2: So, I lasted 12 episodes of Sealed with a Kiss but I can't any more. I am out.

I survived Defendant of Love but I can't SwaK, it's too too too enraging.

So, I am out at ep 12, where heroine finally got liberated from psycho (thanks to my fave character, psycho's bro-in-law) and psycho is in despair and heroine got together and is happy with ex.

Hooray!

I will pretend this is the ending and meanwhile fantasize that heroine and ex live happily ever after while Hawick's character is being gangraped in prison.

The end.

comments
