dangermousie: (Gloria: KS/JJ)
Clearly, yesterday was a day for me to rewatch bits of some of my favorite family dramas. Because I totally rewatched bits of Gloria, the only 50-ep drama I watched with no skipping and almost no fast-forwarding (for my money, the first 35 or so eps are the best but it's good overall).

I was (and still am) madly in love with the main OTP of Gloria, Kang Suk/Jin Jin. The romance started out a little slowly but oh, boy, did it make up for it. From a logical standpoint, it made no sense that they could live happily ever after - his half-brother killed her parents and gave her sister brain damage, and once she found out, she went on a revenge spree (in which he helped!) that destroyed his father's company and ended up in half-brother killing himself. But by the ending, I was so invested in them, I didn't care if they got together due to fairy dust...

Seriously, so perfect. I mean, how could I not love a drama which has the following scene: She is in the middle of ruining his evil family (with his help. Seriously, there is love and there is this) and, of course, they broke up, but he stops by her house and begs if she can playact as his lover for an evening and they go out, and he is so desperate, but not touching her at all, and she kisses him, crying, saying she wants to forget everything tonight but her playacting role. And he kisses her back and just guuuuuuuh.

You guys, this is so so so good! I am halfway through the first ep and had to stop and share. I think I am going to buy the books. It's sharp (oh, the dialogue is to die for) and complicated and the cinematography is gorgeous. I really like Christopher (he corrects the entries in the Encyclopedia Britannica as a hobby! I think that means instant love on my part), I have just met Valentine but I already adore her because she looks utterly straightforward (the very opposite of Sylvia) and is a suffragette who interrupts meetings and protests! Ummm, she and Christopher had about two minutes worth of interaction so far, but I already ship them like mad. Oh, and there is Sylvia. She is perhaps the most complex character in all this. You know, it hit me - she is pretty much what Rebecca must have been like (from Daphne du Maurier's novel). I think she is a loathsome human being but she is beyond fascinating - you can see why everyone is in love with her. I think she is trapped by the Edwardian world more than anyone else.

So, basically if you love smart, gorgeous dramas full of severely repressed people, come right in.

Oh, and I peeked at the end of PE and Here is what we get. I am a happy shipper )

So, yes, I am obsessed.

But I can't stop! I can't remember the last time I got that obsessed over a Western TV show or the last time I shipped a couple so much. I mean! They finish each other's quotations and share eyerolls over the minister's insane Latin screeds and trade obscure facts. It's geek heaven. And their chemistry is insane and super-reserved Christopher totally smiles while looking at her, a genuine smile, and is actually at ease with her, which is super-rare for him. And they get each other ridiculously well even though they just met recently. And she tells him he is the coolest man (paraphrasing in 21st-century speak) she's ever met, and he is totally in love with her and anguished he can't be with her and basically it's better than 90% of romantic fiction I've been consuming recently. Who knew I'd go for a British show like a ton of bricks?

I don't know, but Valentine is pretty much my newest girlcrush.

Horrible anti-suffrage pervert: Threatens Valentine, also calls her Christopher's whore.
Valentine: How dare you insult a man you are unworthy to be a bootboy for?
Horrible anti-suffrage pervert and me in unison: Insult him?

I approve of monomania but I seriously laughed out loud. Priorities, girl!

Also, Sylvia is a horrible person but I feel sorry for her - she married a man least compatible with her need for constant drama and outpouring of emotion and desire for some sort of alpha he-man.

It's modernist but that doesn't bother me. Mainly bought it because I went searching for quotes from the novels and found gems like this:

“You seduced a young woman in order to be able to finish your talks with her. You could not do that without living with her. You could not live with her without seducing her; but that was the by-product. The point is that you can't otherwise talk. You can't finish talks at street corners; in museums; even in drawing-rooms. You mayn't be in the mood when she is in the mood - for the intimate conversation that means the final communion of your souls. You have to wait together - for a week, for a year, for a lifetime, before the final intimate conversation may be attained...and exhausted. So that...That in effect was love.”

I have no idea who Ford Madox Ford is writing about here (I am assuming Christopher and Valentine, but who knows) but guuuuuuh - I will read anything, whatever style and plot (or lack thereof) which has gorgeous passages like that.

1. In my greedy little hands is episode 19 of Faith.

I am about to pick up Baby Mousie so no Faith for me until later today (or, possibly, tomorrow morning *gasp*) but I am giddy like a five-year-old with a new bike. Also, new hair! Yes! I am all for back to the curl! Plus, it symbolizes him giving up duty for her blah blah blah YESSSS.

2. Speaking of hair, this is Yoochun's haircut for I Miss You. With bonus police uniform. I like.

3. And last but not least, because I am an equal opportunity shipper/angst-lover, here are Christian and Valentine from Parade's End yearning for each other.

Look on the bright side, Edwardian thwarted lovers - if you were in a kdrama, you'd probably also be siblings!
