dangermousie: (Chuno - hands by alexandral)

I continue to adore Ojakgyo Brothers, 17 eps in. I've found myself barely fast-forwarding and, I don't know if I was slipped drugs or something, I actually warmed up to the mother (she's had a rough life and she now cares for JE. We all have failings). Still, my main obsession in this baby is Tae Hee/Ja Eun, with a side of Tae Bum/SY. Luckily, the drama is giving me plenty.

More cuteness and similar )

I have finally checked out the first ep of The Moon That Embraces the Sun. Hmmmmm. There have been a lot of instances of my eating crow over thinking something will be awful and then loving it, but I don't think this will be yet another case.

I didn't hate it (which, considering my appalled dread prior to its release, is an achievement in and of itself) but I can't say I loved it or was drawn to watch more. The only time I've ever been OK with childhood sections is when those sections have a large role for complex fascinating adults (for example, I did not mind Ja Myung Go's tremendously long childhood section because I found the prior generation even more fascinating than the mains. On a more pulpy level, that is also true with Warrior Baek Dong Soo). But the adults here are barely-drawn cyphers, nor is there some narrative hook to reel me (I tolerate childhood sections a lot better when we either meet the adults versions first and then flashback, a la Tree with Deep Roots, or are given a framing story of some other sort, as in Legend). First episode was basically some really basic plotting, some cute children being cute, and very little happening. I was neither emotionally nor plotwise involved.

Granted, this is one episode. But this is not an 80-episode sageuk a la Jumong. I expect things to move for me a little faster. More importantly, I accept not yet loving or even knowing very well the characters after one ep. But I have to have a hook - I should want to know them and hope to love them. I don't feel anything here at all. It's kinda like the first half of the first episode of Athena. Why do I care for all these people if they get killed off in that very first half without me knowing or caring much about them? And the second half - sure, the kids are cute. They are kids. The end. They are not particularly fascinating or dealing with adversity or anything. This is very decorative and very bland. It's a sweet enough fairytale, but I am a little too old for those.

I'll give it a second look when the adults show up, but I don't hold out much hope. Kim Su Hyun is one of the very few kdrama actors whose appeal I just don't get. I think of him being a lead and kinda go "ugh." It's no secret I dumped Dream High when it became KSH show.

[livejournal.com profile] filmi_girl came over and we were watching Love Shuffle, still my favorite jdrama of all time.

So now I am craving jdramas like nobody's business and am getting my hands on (for tomorrow's binge)

* Arakawa Under the Bridge (inspired insanity)
* Ima, Ai Ni Yukimasu (for romantic angst)
* Taira No Kiyomori (for the amazing cast and historical epic)
* Rebound (fluffy cuteness)
* Kingyo Club (school stuff)
* Tokyo Wankei (melo)
* Saigo No Koi (ditto)
* Waterboys (Yamada Takayuki)

I see a week-long binge ahead :)

1. Watched eps 2-4 of Love Shuffle with [livejournal.com profile] filmi_girl, and honestly, such a perfect drama. One of the few I rewatch regularly. For some reason, on this rewatch, it's Yuki that's getting to me the most. I just want to adopt and cuddle him (I am shocked that this is the only drama DAITO has done other than a couple of cameos - he's excellent in the role and I would have never guessed he was a newbie). Also, I don't think I realized this before, but that scene with Kairi on the bridge is the first time we see Ojiro open up to anyone. He's excellent at getting to the core of others' innermost selves but he kept every single private thing about himself closed off and you don't realize until he opens up to Kairi. A suicide-obsessive and an adrenaline junkie who may or may not have a deathwish - kinda perfect. Psychiatrist is freaking me out even more this time, and nobody is going to convince me that a major chunk of his plan wasn't spoilers for the whole enchilada )

2. Because I am some sort of a masochist, I feel like rewatching Matsujun's Smile, an amazing, underrated drama that broke me. We'll see. Have a MV:

I think Smile is my favorite Matsujun drama. Yes, even above *gasp* Hanadan.

3. I am pre-obsessed with Kingyo Club which looks like a teen angsty love story per my precise specs. He saves her from bullying! Awwwwww. Have a MV:

4. Have I mentioned how ridiculously awesome the cast of Taira no Kiyomori is? Because OMG. I am watching that baby raw.
