I was going to upload more Japan pictures. I was going to write up more on Sapuri (finished ep 3, and yes, still super wonderful. When Yuya tagged along on Minami and Eita's quasi-date because he didn't even realize he was jealous? Heeee. I actually like Eita now, now).

I was going to do a lot of things, actually.

But none of it happened because I dled and joined Boku wa Imouto ni Koi wo Suru and am about to start on it, even though it's after midnight.

Yup. It's Matsumoto Jun's and Nana Eikura's romantic movie. Based on a manga.

I mean look at this MV below. Sweet young love, right?

Right. Except for the minor fact of the two of them playing twins (the title translates into 'I am in love with my little sister.') Oh Japanese entertainment, never change.

This aside, just one brief MV and my mad MatsuJun love is back. It's funny, because objectively he is not in the least good-looking, but the sheer charisma he has makes you not notice it at all and just find him hot regardless. Plus, that intensity. And I love his hair in this.

I need Hanadan movie yesterday.

Is MatsuJun specializing in manga roles? Shin in Gokusen, Domyouji in Hanadan, this, and I know Bambino is based on a manga too.

Basara

Mr. Mousie and I spent the last part of the evening watching first four eps of the Legend of Basara (the anime). It's AWESOME.

The story takes place in a future Japan, reduced to a barren desert by a catastrophe at the end of the 21st century. The main character is Sarasa, a girl whose twin brother, Tatara, is prophesied to be the "child of destiny" who will bring back the country's wealth and abundance. When Tatara is killed by the Red King who has sworn to eliminate Tatara, Sarasa pretends to be him in order to keep the downtrodden from losing hope and to achieve revenge on the Red King. Oh, and one day she meets a strong-willed, charming guy named Shuri at the hot springs and they fall in love. What they don't know, they are the person the other has dedicated their life to killing. Shuri is the Red King.

See this AMV:

That reminds me I only read first 6 volumes and must read more. Except I need to refresh myself as it has a really complicated plot.

Why Basara?

1. Complicated plot, politics, and war and alliances.
2. Grim post-apocalyptic world that doesn't feel unrealistic. In fact, in a lot of ways, it's a medieval society that is not glamorized for once.
3. Incredibly strong heroine, who is neither Mary Suish, or prettified, or weak, or anything but herself.
4. The hero, Shuri, who is a complicated, ruthless, intelligent individual, who you end up liking and understanding, even though he has done some really horrible things and not in a 'poor hot woobie of shoujo manga' way.
5. A cast of complicated characters.
6. A totally star-crossed love story.
7. ANGST.

In manga news, I bought volume 19 of Red River. It's one of those rare manga with pregnancies. Yuri is pregnant with Kail's child. Now if it wasn't for those pesky invading Egyptians.

But my biggest, happiest new manga discoveries is actually a Korean manhwa Bride of the Water God. Take some gorgeous art-work, throw in some mythology, awesome characters, and a pinch of 'MeruPuri' and we are set. Our heroine is chosen to be sacrificed to the Water God Habaek, so that the drought be over and the village has water. However, when she is led to be drowned, instead of drowning, she finds herself in the mythical realm of her 'husband.' Her husband? A grumpy 10-year old. Except that at night (the only time he can assume his true shape) he turns into a gorgeous, brooding hottie. Of course, our heroine doesn't know it, and he doesn't want her to know it, so he pretends to be her husband's cousin. Can our heroine be all unknowingly falling for her own husband? What's with the gorgeous, mysterious Hyoe, a friend of Habaek? What happened to Habaek's previous ceremonial/sacrificial brides? Can the politics of celestial realm get any more complicated? Oh, and what is with the future hints of delicious, angsty, massive hurt/comfort? Also, can Habaek get any hotter? Unlikely. Bring it on.

But the main love is the art, which is gorgeous beyond belief. This unspoilery MV shows just how gorgeous the art is:

I think I have been infected by [livejournal.com profile] filmi_girl's 'song of the day' posts (btw, if you love Bollywood, check out her LJ).

But I couldn't resist posting this. This is Rishi Kapoor from Laila Majnu, a movie I am dying to get my hands on, as I am interested how he plays the intense star-crossed lover as he usually played sweet, light-hearted guys.

I've been on a bit of Rishi kick since Bobby (OMG, so adorable!!! I want to be like that batty auntie and pinch his cheeks. If I were a teenage girl, I'd probably crush on him, but I am a little too old to crush on an 18 year old :P) But anyway, here is my more shameful and secret reason why I want this:

I don't normally apply the words 'smoking hot' to Rishi. Adorable, or super adorable, or irresistably cute. Yes. Hot? No. But here? HOT.

Yes, I am that shallow.

(Plus, the angstorama that is the Laila Majnu story always appealed to me).

ETA: It is Kim Sam Soon that won. I'll be taking it with me to Thanksgiving.

Yes, I have tons more thoughts on Saawariya. Spoilery ergo behind cut )

And speaking of Sanjay Leela Bhansali, here is one of my favorite moments in Bollywood ever, Sameer and Nandini's first meeting:

Oh God.

And here is one of my favorite songs from the movie, the very last one. Ajay is taking the torn Nandini to Salman, who is ecstatic.

HDDCS song )

Oh SLB, never change. Never ever. Who do I have to kill for you to make Bajirao Mastani?

In non-Bollywood news, a question: which drama should I finish first: My Name is Kim Sam Soon or Hello Miss? I have approximately the same amount of episodes left. Or should I finish Sapuri instead?

Speaking of Sapuri, do the the Sapuri lovers on my flist realize that the manga this is based on, has just been released in the USA? (!!!!!!) I saw the first volume (entitled 'Suppli') in the local Barnes&Noble and couldn't believe my eyes. I didn't get it yet, but I did an omnibus of the first three volumes of Tsubasa. I started watching the Tsubasa anime last year and got sidetracked but what I've seen I loved...

YES!

72 episodes in, and Anna finally admitted she loves Vladimir back. Well, she didn’t say ILY, but I think when the lady in question:

a. tells the guy things like ‘The most important thing is I am home [his, btw]. And you are near.’
b. Continues by staring at him with her anime eyes, touching his cheek and repeating things like ‘I have never felt so good, never’ when he is sitting up there, a few inches away and is staring at her.
c. There is prolonged kissing

I consider her at least mildly interested :D

So, basically, it’s clear if you are hot and angsty and rescue the heroine repeatedly, she will love you back :D

Of course, in order to get to that point, Anna had proven that she has no brains at all*, but hey, I don’t think Vladimir loves her for her mind :D

rambling on heroine's dimness and other things )

Ooooh, and here is the vid of the scene, with my translations.

Translations behind cut )

Of course, seeing that there are almost 50 eps left, I can only wait in giddy anticipation what kind of angst they will get to keep them apart for the duration :D

Not related to anything above, but this video of hot-dog eating contest between Kobayashi, a Japanese hotdog champion, and a bear, is something that can make anyone's year!

I restarted watching Smiling Pasta and I've forgotten its adorableness. It features that rare, but loved by me, type of hero who is just a sweet, nice guy. OMG, how much do I love that the heroine ends up with good, well-mannered, dutiful older brother, and not the rebel, messed-up one. I love it. (Other such heroes are Gong-Chan in M Girl, Jan-Ho in Bichunmu, Dong-Gyu in Hello Miss, Hiroto in Tattakoi, and Mong-Ryong in Delightful Girl Chun-Hyang. All my faves).

This is the perfect MV/trailer for it.

Since I posted about it so long ago, to remind everyone, SP is sort of the typical college drama, with a bit about gangs, and musicians and Full House thrown in. It's crazy, it's cracky, and it utterly works. Our heroine is 'jinxed:' no relationship of hers lasts more than three months. It's a self-fulfilling curse, of course: her anxiety and overcompendasation) leads the guys to get fed up and run. She is awesome otherwise, though. One day, her paths cross with He Qun, a pop idol with a very 'clean' image, carefully cultivated. Due to a bizarre number of circs, they end up being photographed smooching and so to keep his squeaky clean image his manager claims she is his gf. He Qun, still in shock and anger after his long term gf Rosa (I hate her) left him for his badboy brother, is not caring enough to put a stop to it. Which works for our plucky heroine as now her family is off her back, on the boyfriend front. And it goes from there.

I love all the wacky, awesome characters, except for Rosa and He Qun's appalling father (Jeez, what is it with drama parents? Do they take evilness pills?) Even He Qun's bratty younger rebel brother ends up likeable eventually.

In a lot of ways, it's a typical 'rich reserved boy with awful family falls for the plucky poor heroine with an awesome family' (though of course, her family isn't poor, it's not as rich as He Qun's). Because it's clear He Qun falls almost as much for warm, cooky, affectionate family as he does for his OTP.
