Cheer up, half-human warrior hottie! The gal from the future will totally cheer you up!

Yes, I am watching The Holy Pearl. I was trying to hold off until the subs were done but it will probably take a loooong time, so I give up and will just watch whatever I can with subs and then stream the rest on viki. So fun!

It hit me that the reason I adore Bridal Mask so much is because it's pretty much wuxia in disguise. Don't believe me? Let's see:

1. Not only is the protagonist highly proficient in weapons and hand-to-hand, but a decent chunk of the cast seems to have fighting skills that would make a ninja weep and use them on a regular basis.
2. A death toll to rival that of the plague and enough emotional and physical torture of the protagonist to make a team of shrinks happy for decades.
3. Hissable bad guys with questionable facial hair and even grottier henchmen.
4. Heroine who is good at fighting and has an enemies-but-first-loves thing going on with the hero. Occasionally they work out their issues through mortal combat.
5. Secondary girl who sows death and destruction through sexy minion.
6. Families full not just of dysfunction but of of literal fighting - these two brothers cross swords on a regular basis.
7. Evil secret societies.
8. Not only people recover from pretty fatal wounds, but less fatal wounds heal freakishly fast - when you think someone should be in the hospital recovering for weeks, he/she is out in a day, kicking ass and taking names.
9. More secrets and masks and double and triple identities and vendettas than you can shake a stick at.
10. A wise old mentor with facial hair imparting secrets of the past family tragedies and feuds and nifty fighting assistance.

See? Wuxia!

Also, after the brutal misery that was ep 6 of BM, I wanted to watch Joo Won in something more cheerful so I continued with Ojakgyo Brothers ep 42. The hightlight of which, for me, was this little exchange:

Ja Eun asks Tae Hee why he doesn't want to tell his family they are dating. And TH tells her "If we reveal it, Grandma will ask us to get married. We can't do that." JE gets really pissed off and walks off but then comes back and:
JE: Aren't you going to marry me then? Are you not going to marry me?
TH: It's not that... Of course I'll marry you.
JE: Then, about Grandma making us marry...and you said we can't. What does it mean?
TH: That's because of you. You're still young.
[pause]
Did you just propose to me?

Ahahahahahahaaaaaaaa! And JE gets awfully flustered. They are so cute!

More adorable caps from the ep )

And I stopped right there because I know the whole 'it seems Ja Eun's Dad killed Tae Hee's Dad' storyline is coming up and if I have to watch Joo Won angst in two separate dramas at once, I might rupture something.

For God's sake, make babies already!!!!! )

This was so gorgeous, it was surreal. And while consciously he would never admit it because it would feel like betrayal of his dead wife, he's totally stricken by that sight of her. Look at the way he stares.

Yes, I am watching this at a glacial pace as I watch it with Mr. Mousie but that is good as it's still being subbed. And yes, I loved all the clever scheming in this ep and the way Gexiao can be kinda scary. But nothing appealed to my shippy heart as much as the above.

I am getting an irresisible urge to dig out my DVDs of Bichunmoo the Mainland/Korean wuxia/period co-production (my Chinese version DVDs - the Korean version hacked the drama considerably to make it shorter).

Years ago, I got my greedy hands on it, watched part of it, became obsessed but then didn't have the time, got sidetracked, and didn't go back. And it's a complete shame because it's not only a well-written, emotional drama, but it's also a drama that hits all my narrative kinks (and fixes all the problems I had with the movie version. Both were based on a famous manga).

For those of you who have no idea what I am talking about, Bichunmoo is about a pair of star-crossed lovers played by Joo Jin Mo and Park Ji Yoon. He's the sole survivor of a famous murdered martial arts family. She's a hidden aristocrat. Their love cannot be for many many reasons, but they valiantly try anyway and fail. When they meet years later, she's a woman married to his former best friend, believing her lover dead. And he's a rebel leader who's been through hell and has held on to the one perfect thing in his life - the memory of her.

I think Bichunmoo would be a great gateway drama for (a) people who like period kdramas but never tried a Mainland one; (b) vice-versa (c) people who have never tried a period drama of any sort but are curious.

I haven't seen any other kdrama/cdrama period collaborations (I don't know if they exist even), but Bichunmoo is a great reason why they should be made - the mix fixes certain problems with both cdramas and kdramas and takes only strengths from their respective traditions.

From cdramas, it took cinematography (the shots are much more beautiful and fluid than they are in period kdramas which often tend to be static and staged), the 'grim fairytale' feel of well-made wuxia, and an epic larger-than-life romanticism that even kdramas, good as they are at romance, cannot match (I have never seen sweeping romantic epic moments the way period cdramas do them).

From kdramas, it took a certain understated feel (both in fights, which feel much more real than wire-fu and acting - there are no crazy old sages mugging for all it's worth and the leads do not succumb to overacting eiher a la Chinese Paladin), a stronger and more unified narrative (as opposed to a lot of wuxias which feel picaresque), and kdrama's almost overbearing focus on all possible nuances of relationships, romantic and not.

And as both countries do epic, larger-than-life doom so perfectly, well...

Anyway, I am restarting tomorrow. Anyone want to join me? Have a MV. It features one of the OST songs, which is, actually, my favorite drama song ever:

I tried, I honestly tried. I watched ep 2 of Coffee House. It was sharp, and witty, and well-acted. And I could not get into it at all. It seems as if my Chinese/Taiwanese drama bug is really really hard to dislodge.

And on that front, I dled Chinese Paladin 3 and Easy Fortune Happy Life.

I have posted about EFHL before - it's a delicious twdrama in which its ridiculously gorgeous hero hires a hitman to get rid of a rival inheritor without realizing it's the girl he's been falling for. I sort of skimmed it on viikii a long time ago but now I am properly watching it with good quality video and subs and oh-so-delicious. Any drama which has a love triangle between plucky heroine, dude who hired a hitman to rub her out, and said hitman, wins my vote.

If I were Fu An, my diary entry for the day would be "Dear Diary, on the minus side, today I had lost my grandmother in a house fire. On the plus side, I got held by a hot guy who saved me by preventing me from jumping into a raging inferno. Overall, a draw."

Some amusing caps from ep 2 )

I have no idea if Chinese Paladin 3 is any good (I did not care for CP1) but it does have one distinction - the world's prettiest credits.

Gorgeous credits behind cut )

Oh well, as long as I am doing a picture dump, have a few pics from ep 32 of Legend of Condor Heroes, the drama I plan to continue tomorrow - I think I had enough of a break from The Myth to be able to cope with angst without going bonkers.

Pretty pretty pretty )

And speaking of The Myth, the insane subbing project is progressing, slowly - I have first 20 eps' subs, untimed. In a couple of days I will have the rest and then the timing fun starts. Since it will probably take me forever, as soon as I get all the untimed subs, I will upload them into a MU folder for anyone to take who wants them.

Yes, I am only halfway through LOCH but as you can tell, I am obsessed.

If you need to gauge my tastes, I've seen and loved (in addition to LOCH), Return of the Condor Heroes 2006, Handsome Siblings (the Nic Tse parts, the Dicky Cheung ones were horrifying), Da Ren Wu, Red Dust. Did not care for Chinese Palladin.

[Poll #1574391]

I am sort of broke at the moment so buying a pricy DVD set is rather out of the question. Anything you recommend has be either downloadable or streamed (except for Littly Fairy, LWVB and PK - I have DVDs of those already).
