So, I finished Yamanade Nadeshiko Shichi Henge a.k.a. Wallflower jdrama.

Wallflower was a drama where I am faintly surprised I kept watching and finished it - I enjoyed each ep as I watched but the moment I finished, I promptly forgot about it. And yet, next week, there I would be watching the next ep. Because it was usually out on the weekend it probably helped - shockingly, it's the first currently-airing jdrama I finished in a year.

It wasn't a masterpiece - there was nothing emotionally meaningful or sparklingly clever. But it was a fun, wacky (but not too wacky) way to pass 40 or so minutes pleasantly.

They watered Sunako down from the manga but she was still cool. I was impressed by how much Gothy, off-kilter vibe of the manga they kept. And shocked beyond measure they managed to cram the other three boys' OTPs into it (they all exist in the manga but I was sure there'd be no time).

I still boggle at the concept of Kame as gorgeous, let alone gorgeous enough to cause mass riots (even among the 4 I thought both Takenaga and Ranmaru were better-looking) but he did a good job with the role.

Ehhh, it's not going on a favorites list or anything but I actually finished it, which is impressive in and of itself.

All I have to say about ep 8 of Wallflower is:

They introduced Ranmaru's fiancee!

!!!!!

I love Tamao so freaking much and they actually put her in the drama!!!!!!!

I mainly post about Chuno and Pick the Stars but I am also watching two other dramas - the adorable Taiwanese confection Down with Love and jdrama Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge (i.e. Wallflower). I don't post much about them because neither is too meta-able.

Quick thoughts )

I have also tried the first episode of Let's Go Watch Meteor Shower, the minland adaptation of Hana Yori Dango which was supposed to not be one :) After watching the first ep I can say two things: (a) OMG so bad. I laughed so hard for all the wrong reasons; (b) when they said it wasn't based on Hanadan they weren't kidding - if I ever thought I'd see a well-adjusted, smiley, intelligent Domyouji...

Meteor Shower ep 1 in caps - decidedly answering the question of whether this version's Rui is the ugliest man on earth )

I was not exactly sure why they were half-heartedly bickering with each other but the ep ended and I was out. No more. I had my problems with the Korean version but compared to this even the second half of it was a freaking masterpiece.

Did I mention that in this version Akira and Tsubaki hook up? Contemplate that please.

Watched ep 4 of Wallflower which continues to be amusing and engaging if not earth-shaking or romantically involving.

Everyone realizes Kyohei's feeling except for Kyohei :)

And the scene at the wedding, when Kyohei grabbed Sunako and they ran away was actually...super-darn shippy. Though I liked the part where she was kicking goons in the face in her wedding dress even more. Oh, I totally ship my dysfunctional violent woobies.

1. OK, Still Wants to Marry, it's just ridiculous of you to tease me with this:

When I won't get subs for at least a week.

Also, the blatant fanservice for (presumably older lady viewing audience) is pretty amusing. I thought the college badboy rocker fantasy sort of dies with leaving college but it seems not. I mean, yeah, it's OK for a 20-yr-old to want that sort of thing, but for a 30+-yr-old professional heroine? Bizarre. Seriously. How is he going to support you? I am both amused (because Kim Bum = automatic awwww) and a little skeeved out - I kinda want him to hook-up with an age-appropriate college girl instead.

2. I watched ep 2 of Wallflower over the weekend and it is official:

(a) I am really enjoying this drama
(b) They watered down the weirdness/made it more serious than the manga but not badly so
(c) They weakened Sunako a bit but she's still pretty awesome.

As far as adaptations go, it's pretty good. There is not much to meta about this drama but it's a fun watch.

They are going to give me my Takenaga/Noi. YESSSS.

Seriously, you have no idea of my glee that they have Noi in this!

Without weird fringe and bizarro mannerisms, actress who plays Sunako is quite gorgeous.

I am probably heartless but I was sort of LOLing while Kyohei was angsting about being repeatedly sexually harrassed by men and women because He! Is! Too! Pretty! Mainly because I just cannot buy Kame as inspiring any sort of hormonal frenzy in the entirety of the population of Japan. He's not even good-looking, let alone irresistable. Oh well. There there, Kyohei, I am sorry, I do feel bad for you. Now don't head-butt me, k?

I wonder if they are going to bring in the story with Kyohei's crazy mother (and Sunako's solution which is food).

Anyway, it's a great deal of fun.

3. Dear Amazon reviewer, if you start your 1-star review by saying that maybe you've been spoiled "by the literary prowess of Diana Gabaldon", you have just ensured I cannot take anything you say seriously. (Btw, the review was for 'Confessions of an Austen Addict' - no great book but at least it did not have pages and pages of graphic s&m rape meant to titillate the viewers). Gabaldon - archenemy.

Now that everything has come out, more or less, here is what I will be watching this January-February-March:

SLAVE HUNTERS/WALLFLOWER/PICK THE STARS/THE WOMAN WHO STILL WANTS TO MARRY.

Or as Andy Warhol would put it:

I plan to either give up out of lack of interest, wait until they are fully subbed, or I have more space in my schedule for the rest.

Dramas I might watch if the slate clears/subs appear ASAP/I get bored with one of my watches: Pasta, Jejoongwon, The Reputable Family, Down with Love, Shinsengumi Peacemaker, Tokujo Kabachi, Calling for Love, Saigo no Yakusoku.

Dramas I have no interest in whatosever: Assorted Gems, God Of Study, Will it snow on Xmas, Three Brothers, Loving You a Thousand Times, Creating Destiny, Smile You, Angel Bank, Code Blue 2, Ryoma den, Salaryman Kintaro, The Pink Lipstick.

I don't even know about the existence of the rest.

I am sort of obsessed with Wallflower as I have already watched ep 1 four times.

(Viikii is almost done with subbing the ep, btw).

In any event, I bring you my caps from ep 1 of Wallflower. I am so ecstatic they got my favorite manga right - down to the atmosphere of cooky hilarious quasi-horror :)

Creatures of the liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight )

In other news, I have finally recovered from the amazingness of Slave Hunters eps 3-4 enough to write about them and give you caps.

Slave Hunters: as sublime as ever )

Not related to either of the above but in honor of Im Ju Hwan getting cast as a lead in a drama by Legend's writer (OMG), have this awesome Tamra the Island MV. It's with a rather appropriate Russian song - woohoo for other Russian-speaking Tamra fans!
