You know how I said I was giving up Veronica Mars? The widely polarizing reactions I've seen on my flist to last night's ep actually made me want to check it out for myself, if only to see what all the uproar was about. It's kinda sad, but a small mean part of me wants to watch it just so I can bust on it, which I know is irrational since I haven't even seen the damn thing.

I have also realized I've been neglecting Battlestar Galactica fandom shamelessly and haven't even done any write-ups post 3.02. So here are my quick thoughts on 3.03 Cut in case someone on my flist hasn't seen it yet but wants to remain unspoiled )

I still have long meta to write on My Girl and that reminds me. When I went in search of more MG pics on soompi, I went into Lee Dong-Wook thread (he played Gong-Chan) and I was really taken aback. It contained the usual sqeeing about his hotness, but besides that most of the topic (which went literally into hundreds of pages) from my cursory scanning was about people shipping him with Da Hae, the actress who played Yu-Rin. I am really taken aback and surprised by the huge amount of RPShipping going on in there. People were posting pictures of them at some event(s), analyzing their body language to support their theories, etc. Which is pretty bizarre. The only basis for thinking they are dating, as far as I could tell, was that they starred in MG together and had great chemistry (which they did). But they aren't Gong-Chan and Yu-Rin, they are real people with separate identities. That led me to wonder as to why RPShipping seems to be so much more prevalent in Asian fandoms. I haven't seen such levels of devotion to it as in LDW thread very often, but if you go into the Goong thread, people there are all about hooking up the actors who play the leads, and ditto for the DBY thread where people are into hooking up Mike He and Rainie Yang because they were good together in DBY.

Is the line between entertainment and reality thinner there? Do people have different norms? (In most non-Asian fandoms, RPF is regarded as a bastard cousin you never admit to the house, or if you do, it's at the dead of night). I can't even say that RPF is a fan continuation of canonically-supplied RPF (like with Japanese idols who work for JE and do canon RPF for fans) because as far as I am aware, that is not the case in Taiwan or Korea. I find RPF/S of any kind vaguely disturbing, firstly for privacy reasons (I wouldn't ship people I met on the street, ditto actors) but mainly because it seems to me to blur the line between reality and fiction and deny the realness of real people just because you don't know them in person.

Anyway, this was a digression.

Good-bye, my former love.

I am sorry.

I know we have been together for a while. Couple of years, give or take.

In the beginning, our relationship had the giddy highs of shiny new things: I would skip meals, sleep, and even social interaction to spend time with you.

I would smile out loud to myself while thinking about you, or just try to puzzle you out. And I thought about you a LOT.

I went looking at all the pictures of you I could find, and I saved them on my photobucket. I joined groups of other people who understood your wonderfulness, and devoted hours in reading about you in various incarnations, including some creative takes on the moments in your existence I never saw. I would probably be sending you a bill for carpal-tunnel, if I thought you'd pay.

But then you changed. You went away for a few months and when you came back, you were different. You were not the one I fell in love with. Shiny and with a great wardrobe, but not as complex, not as emotional, not as interesting to be with.

I hung in there, hoping it was a temporary change and we could go back to what we were. But alas, it was not to be. After another brief hiatus, you are even further from what I thought you were. I believed you to be a clever, quirky, complex companion, but instead you are a snappy-mouthed fratboy.

Far from clearing my schedule to spend time with you, I have started to avoid you. I would wash my hair, or go for walks, or even hang out with those cool guys from Korean dramas instead.

It seems we weren't meant to be.

I must face reality and break it off for good.

Good-bye, Veronica Mars. I wish you well. May you find other admirers more suited to the new you.

If you want me back, I'll be over in the corner, crushing on my other love, Battlestar Galactica and trying to catch up with that new guy around the block, Supernatural.

But I am still keeping the Logan photos, mind.

Courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] danceswithwords, this is a great article on the Star Wars fandom that made me ROFL.

Also, Veronica Mars got three more eps which is sort of odd for the supposed arc, unless they will wrap up the second arc by ep 16 (which they might). I find myself not caring because the show has lost me this season, unfortunately.

Some people should not be allowed to have kids. Walking home last night, I saw a boy, not older than seven, who had trouble with his costume being twisted. His Mother? Was yelling at him (and I quote) 'Get your fucking arm out!' and then yelling so loud I could hear half a block away. Poor kid. UGH. Made me so mad.

I missed Veronica Mars last night even though I was home. I confess my interest in the show has slid to an all-time low. I am all 'oh, will dl it some time' while I remember earlier waiting impatiently for each ep. It seems RT was a one-season wonder. Oh well.

Mmmmm. I finally caught up on Veronica Mars eps 3.2 and 3.3 last night.

It’s interesting, because while I am glad for VM’s new high ratings as it’s a good show that deserves to stay on the air, I must confess my own mad pash for it is rather gone. What I loved about it: the darkness, the noir, is gone. The things that I loved about it: Veronica’s dysfunction, her outsider status, the perfect outside-rotten inside of Neptune familial life, the sharp class divisions, are gone. This isn’t noir anymore, with a cynical antihero. This is a fun, clever, smart-mouthed show. But it’s not what I signed up for. I agree with [livejournal.com profile] queenofthorns that this is a logical progression for Veronica’s character. But it doesn’t make it exciting to watch.

Not to mention my recent issues with how this show deals with feminism.

But guess what. Am still watching. You want to know why? Because whatever other changes, Logan and Veronica still bring it to the yard.

Prison experiment rant, L/V swoon )

I have also started the unfortunately named manga, Happy Hustle High. Despite the name, which makes me think of a school for gigolos (what is the Japanese name of this, I wonder), it’s delightful, fluffy, perfect little shoujo, 5 volumes long. It follows what happens when an all-girls school merges with an all-boys one.

I love the heroine, Hanabi. She is a pushy, cheerful, a bit geeky girl. Sort of like what Aya from Ayashi No Ceres was before the whole ‘you are a ceres reincarnation, your family wants to kill you’ thing cropped up. And she doesn’t get shy, or give up, or anything.

I also like the male protagonist, Yasuaki. He grew up in a family of men (his father and brothers) so he is a bit awkward with girls, but other than that, he is refreshingly normal. Plus, this mangaka really knows how to draw bishounen.

The relationship stuff is also pleasantly non OTT. I love the bit where she hasn’t shown in school for a few days so he is worried and comes to visit her and he has wild images of her being robbed or murdered, but she opens the door and she’s been glued to a video game for three days, and looks like hell and goes ‘I am Hanabina, Empress of the Jewel Empire’ (the game involves that). Heeeeeee. And he tells her to move over and they play together. ROFL. Love.

I am reading The Stranger Prince by Margaret Irwin. Rereading, actually. It is one of my favorite books and is a novel dealing with Prince Rupert, one of my biggest historical crushes.

It doesn't really deal with all of his life (it would have to be a heck of a thick book, though if anyone know of any books fiction and non that do so, do let me know), but is mainly focused on his role in the English Civil War. Mmmmmm. Rupert. The book is wonderful: chock-full of cool characters, complicating politics and fighting, angst, and even an OTP between Rupert and Mary Richmond (which is doomed, doomed, doomed). It's a totally brilliant book.

The only other fiction book dealing with Rupert that I've read was Midsummer Tempest by Poul Anderson, a fantasy novel which took place in an AU where Shakespeare's plays were actually real. It was a funny, clever, twisty book, with Rupert as the protagonist, creating plans of action with the fairies from Midsummer's Night, taking locomotives at the end of the battle, and falling in love with the Puritan daughter of his jailer (which is, actually, sort of taken from the real background for Rupert who was a prisoner of war in Germany before the English Civil War had his jailer's daughter go nuts for him). It's a really great book. Not as great as The Stranger Prince though.

Also, it turns out that my disc of Kamisama Mou Sukoshi Dake is defective. Ep 10 won't play! :( Since this is the one with the sex scene, I will just assume Takeshi's hotness melted the DVD portion. But now I need a new version. Pronto. Am deprived.

Will catch up on VM 3.2 and all of SPN tonight if I can.

I've also gotten my copy of Love 2000. The subs are excellent and I watched the ending in the process of checking out whether all discs work. Heeee. It was supposed to be dramatic but made me giggle. Spoilers for ending )
