I know I've pimped it before but...

Do you like Vampire stories? Of the angsty, romantic kind? That are actually good and not Twilight-ridiculous? Then you simply must check out Vampire Knight, an anime based on a hit manga which is set in an alternate universe where vampires exist and fight against humans who are largely unaware of their existence. The story revolves around three characters: Yuki (the heroine protagonist), Zero and Kaname (two male characters). It's what Twilight wishes it was but is not.

Yuki is a high school student at an elite academy and the adopted daughter of the schoolmaster. She has no memories of the time before she was found wandering in the snow as a child and saved from a vampire attack by one Kaname Kuran, a pureblood vampire himself, who now attends the academy as part of a radical initiative between some vampires and humans to coexist. Yuki's best friend is Zero Kiryu, who comes from a famous family of vampire hunters and who lost his entire family to a vampire attack. Zero and Yuki are the only two students at the school who know about vampire existence and thus are charged with protecting the human student body. Yuki is happy to do so, as not only she is a good-hearted optimist by nature, but ever since she was saved, she has had an (understandable) crush on Kaname. Zero, also understandably, hates vampires more than anything. Only...he is slowly turning into a vampire himself as a result of that childhood attack, no matter how he fights it.

VK has everything I love: cheese, gorgeous artwork, super-melodrama, hot men who are suicidal and self-loathing, angsty angsty love (Zero/Yuki is one of my all time favorite ships), assassinations, politics, rigid hierarchical society, a love triangle, family relationships that make Dysfunction Central seem healthy...

Also, I am amused how it sucks to be a shoujo heroine: normally I'd say Yuki is quite lucky, having two gorgeous, capable guys madly in love with her. Except leaving aside the fact that they both need decades of therapy, one is slowly turning into a vampire who will have to be executed before he goes mad (the only way Yuki could keep him from killing himself is to promise him she will kill him before he goes mad) and the other one is not only too manipulative for Yuki (the playing field is not level) but is also Spoiler for the part not covered in the anime yet )

Also, I've never seen a show so explicit in its metaphor that biting = sex. A bunch of biting scenes from first season:

I will never believe SMeyer didn't read L.J. Smith (an author of teen vamp/witch/etc books who wrote decade+ ago) and steal things from her. I am currently reading L.J. Smith's Vampire Diaries and the similarities are uncanny, and I am not just talking about the fact that both are 4-volume series. Let's see: we have a narrator girl in a small town, whom a lot of boys like. We have a mysterious new boy in her school who is a vampire who doesn't eat humans blah blah. I am too lazy to list the similarities but suffice it to say they are ample.

However, LJ Smith >>>>>>> SMeyer. Smith is a fun, pulpy read while SMeyer is that horrible one-night stand which makes you feel unclean afterwards. Shall I count in how many ways Smith's quartet is better?

1. I have no idea if Elena and Stefan engage in sex in any point during the books, but there is no half-vampire baby biting her way out of Elena's womb and named after a Loch Ness monster.

2. Elena is not my favorite heroine in the whole wide world, but I actually like her just fine. She has a personality!. And *gasp* female friendships. And a world that does not revolve 120% around Stefan. She does not get married out of high school, does not desire to be turned into a vamp, and also does not state every ten minutes how gorgeous her boyfriend is.

3. Stefan - a bit of an angsty vamp cliche but he actually has a personality. And I can see why Elena likes him - he is a very good guy. Oh, and he almost rips the necks off a bunch of people and certainly leaves them in need of long-term hospitalization. Plus, I can actually buy the love story. Most importantly, at no point does he sparkle.

4. Vampire Brady Bunch v. sibling vamps who hate each other and have killed each other in the past? I know who I prefer.

5. These books actually have *gasp* a plot and are not solely about marbley, sparkly perfection of vampiredom. In fact, a rather twisty plot. I approve.

6. Aaaaaangst. There are deaths and resurrections and a lot of torture. Yum.

7. Vampire Baseball? What's that?

*uses icon from another retelling of angsty high school vampire cliche that actually works*

I had a whole bunch of caps and comments on various things, so I thought I'd post them.

First off, continuing the theme of vampires that do not sparkle, I still adore Vampire Knight and to convince you to watch the prettiness, I bring you caps behind the cut.

Awesomeness here )

Also, my rewatch of Buffy reminded me of this (because DB is in it). I hate it when shows are set in DC! The first five minutes of Bones made me LOL so hard at the geography (yes, I plan to do a selective watch of the shippy bits the show. But I hope they stay away from the outsides :))

Look at all the screwups in the first five minutes!

Pictorial evidence )

Anyway, it's a good thing for them DB is so hot and I gave this show a second chace and liked it, because that Pilot made my eyes burn.

And I finally finished Moonlight and a few pretty caps behind cut.

Prettiness here )

Is anybody else as fixated on the anime version of Vampire Knight?

I love it. Well, by 'it' I clearly mean Zero, the broody, angsty blond best friend of the heroine, Yuuki. Mmmm, Zero. Zero comes from a long line of vampire hunters (in the world of VK, vampires exist but most people do not know about them) and has been living with Yuuki's adopted Dad since he was a kid, when a vampire wiped out the rest of his family. He, understandably, loathes vampires with every fiber of his being but is slowly being turned into a vampire himself. *gasp*

Oh, how I lurve my suicidal Zero angst and the sexy bitin' scenes (Yuuki clearly believes that what's a little blood between BFFs: if the boy is hungry, he needs to eat).

I am glad to see that youtubers are quite as fond of it all as I am and have made a huge proliferation of Yuuki/Zero vids.

Here is one:

Here is another )

My inner teen revels in this. It's like Twilight, only actually, you know...good.

Is Vampire Knight anime as good as the manga?

Oh yes.

Now I can see vampire angst in anime form!!!!

Here is an awesome Zero MV:

Yeah, I admit...I am a mad Zero fan. I mean, vampire hunter who is slowly turning into a vampire himself? YES. So angsty. Plus, Yuki/Zero=OMG, pushing all my fic kinks: childhood friends, she is the cheerful one, she has no childhood memories etc etc...oh, and the biting. I never thought vampire biting was hot before (or since). OMG.

This port is sort of a giant screencap dump. With commentary, of course.

First off, we have my newest favorite, Powerful Opponents, caps for eps 2-4. As I was telling [livejournal.com profile] filmi_girl, I think I will be kinda devastated whichever way the love triangle plays out because I adore all three of the mains so. But Gwan Pil a little more than the rest. Seriously though, I adore Gwan Pil to bits, and he is so my RL type, and is generally awesome , but then Su Ho needs her more probably, because he is unfunctional and...OK. Clone the heroine, writers!

Cool caps )

And now, Vampire Knight opening credits and beginning caps.

VK caps )

Caps from second half of ep one of Wish to See You Again

It doesn't rain but it pours.

Not only is the gorgeous and lush Vampire Knight currently airing as an anime, but two other manga-anime adaptations have gotten me dancing in glee.

Itazura No Kiss (It Started with a Kiss) has just started airing! OMG. If by some miracle you have me friended but do not know the plot of ISWAK, very short summary is: spunky girl in love with brainy guy who doesn't really know much about emotions. But she is very determined. It's LOLtastic and one of my fave dramas ever.

And not just that, but apparently S.A., a manga I really enjoyed, is also turned into an anime! It's about a super-competitive girl who goes to a super-special class, her one dream in life to overtake and defeat the number 1 guy (she is number 2).
