I just realized something awesome.

Those of you who hated Troy because it completely destroyed source materials, or because it sucked as a movie, got it all wrong.

You know, it works perfectly as one of those deliciously amusing romance novels that has one of those Vikings/Native Americans/Vampires/Highlanders on the cover with their chest bared.

Youtube is totally full of Achilles/Briseis shippy vids :D

Heh.

I confess to thoroughly enjoying the movie when it initially came out because it made me think of those cheesy 50s sword and sandal epics and plus I got to ogle the cast but yes...it should have definitely been entitled 'The Trojan Horse Lover' or 'Moaning for Menelaos' or 'Peplos of Desire' :D

I have to give one non-ridiculous point to the movie though. I am all for revisionist takes on classic stories, but it's basically impossible to find any fictional take on Troy in the last 50 years which didn't have the Trojans super-noble and every Greek a monster. This has to be one of the few modern versions where Achilles isn't a total serial killer psychopath.

Even better, right now I am reading a novel about the return of various heroes from the Trojan War. It's focused on Odysseus, but the best part is the Menelaos is one of the main characters and this has to be the only modern fictional portrayal of him as awesome. I never got the whole tendency to do Helen/Paris4evah-Menelaos!evil thing. I always actually rather liked him. And he took his slutty wife back and forgave her. I do admit to being influenced at a tender age by a photograph of a classical statue where he looked super HOT.
