1. My Kindle went to its maker last night. I turned it on, and a bunch of lines showed up all over. This is exactly how my old Kindle died, but it was fine since by that point I had it for years and it was literally held together with duct tape. This Kindle I only had for a few months. Thankfully, Amazon has been awesome and I am getting a free replacement early next week. Meanwhile, I have put a Kindle app on my iPad because I am like an addict with crack - need my fix.

2. Speaking of books, I have just finished Daisy Godwin's The American Heiress. I think I could sum it up as "what if Consuelo Vanderbilt married someone who was not an utter loser." The story centers around Cora Cash, the richest heiress of the Gilded Age. Her ambitious, steely mother would like nothing more than for her daughter to marry into the upper echelons of the English nobility and takes her over to England for that reason. Luckily for that plan, Cora falls in love with the impoverished but very blue-blooded Ivo, ninth Duke of Wareham. Happy ending, right? Not really - their worlds are very different and Cora often feels like a fish out of water. More importantly, her new surroundings are shrouded in mysteries and secrets, some of which are huge enough to destroy her marriage.

It's a very good novel - I loved the period detail, the leisurely pace that is nonetheless not dull, and characters themselves - neither Cora nor Ivo nor any of the others peopling the book are flawless but they are all understandable and more or less sympathetic.

3. Chuck - eeee! I watched the ep with the truth serum and the bit where Chuck asked Sarah as to whether she saw them having a future and she said no and his face and then it turned out she's been trained to lie under truth serum. My heart! It really shows her feelings though because if she felt nothing, she'd have no problem leading him on. But she doesn't want to admit she feels for him even to herself. Also, aaawwww at Ellie and Awesome having a functional relationship.

4. I tried History of the Salaryman and it's smart and funny but I don't think I can do black comedy for 20 eps. A movie, sure. A series, nope.

5. Everyone loves Wild Romance but I remain cautious because except for Lee Dong Wook, I don't like anyone in the cast and the promos seem so OTT.

6. Cuidado con el Angel continues to be excellent and deliiiish.

7. I just finished ep 7 of Haven and I am beginning to see where the threesome fans are coming from :P

In between working, prepping for Baby Mousie's third birthday party, and entertaining both sets of our parents, I got time to sneak more of my newest obsession.

* Maite and William have insane, insane chemistry! No matter what they are doing on-screen (talking, fighting, staring, whatever), all I keep thinking is 'why are you not having sex against the wall yet?'

* Juan Miguel seems to be a human iceberg but not when he's around Marichuy - she really gets under his skin in a totally visceral way and he really loses any control - he becomes a total sucker for a hard luck story that shouldn't fool a cat (more about it below), he's devastated like a kid who learns Santa isn't real when he finds out she lied, he tracks her down in the middle of the slum to have a fight:

Visual evidence )

And pretty much throughout, he stares at her as if he wants to devour her (when he normally is Mr. Detachment). He even muses about how pretty her name is. It's adorable! It's like a kid with a crush.

* My favorite scene so far is the one in jail (where cops bust Marichuy as one of the people fighting in a nightclub) that goes something like this:

Juan Miguel: Delinquents, I want to help you!
Delinquents: Awww, man, ignore the square.
Marichuy: Hmmmmm, I know a sucker when I see one...
*comes closer*
Marichuy: Here, big guy, how about this story that should fool nobody? Yeah, I was there because I was delivering news to a waiter his wife was giving birth and my parents will beat me and I am a good girl let me out...
Juan Miguel: Braaaaaaain locking down.
Marichuy: Hmmmmm, maybe I should be clearer. Let me demonstrate my innocence by clinging to you in a full body hug. Mmmmmmmm...is that a six pack I can feel under that suit? Daaaaamn, I want to take this for a trial ride. Ooops, no that was me :P
Juan Miguel: Where do I put my hands? Panic!!!! Ice melting around heart...robot self does not know how to cope with human emotion overdose. Heeeeeeelp!

And of course, he buys her story and gets her out. Awwwwwwwww.

* I am glad to announce that even when he barely escaped deadly perils of the watery grave and is in ICU, Juan Miguel lets nothing interfere with his hair. It's just as perfectly styled as ever.

* OMG, the little girl who plays Juan Miguel's daughter is the most adorable thing ever! I just want to squish her and pinch her cheeks! I am entirely confused as to how he's old enough to have a 6-7 yr old kid (I know people in Mexico marry earlier than in the US so...hmmmm).

* And that is why I am glad Juan Miguel's wife is deeeeeeeeeead. I don't blame her for the marriage not working out - that is both their faults - sure, she was shallow and solipsistic but he's completely uninvested and looks like he'd rather be trimming his nails than be in her vicinity (I totally laughed when she was complaining to her Mom he never ever showed any passion for her and wondering if there is another woman. If this was not a telenovela, the answer would be 'dear, have you checked out your hubby's sexual preferences?' But since it is, it's just that nobody but heroine can melt his icy heart). Nope, it's because the wife is a horrible mother. WTF with putting a 6-yr-old (normal weight btw) on a strict diet so she won't become chubby later. WTF! Go eat a piece of cake at the wake, kid!

In other news, this is what kdramas need! Makeouts! Kind soul posted their wedding night on youtube. In 28 eps I shall be there!

I need to check out Triunfo del Amor if for no other reason than apparently it stars my new favorite on-screen couple Maite Perroni/William Levy as unknowing stepsiblings (according to wiki)! Who seem to spend all their time doing this:

I believe in making family members welcome. So do they, in a slightly different way.

AAAAAAAAH HOW DO THESE PEOPLE KNOW TO CATER TO ME????!!!

In semi-related conclusion have an deliciously angty vid from CCEA with yummy makeouts and shirtlessness. I foresee dramas being supplanted by a new obsession....

Worst honeymoon ever, y/y?

In conclusion, don't ever say I am not sharing with my flist :P

To my everlasting shame (if I had any such thing, that is), I have fallen for Cuidado con el Angel, a Mexican telenovela that is being subbed on viki.

Marichuy: poor and orphaned but plucky and optimistic beauty from the slums.
Juan Miguel: Gorgeous upperclass workaholic with a TERRIBLE SECRET (tm).
Me: obsessed!

There are smoochies, angst, separation, evil exes, birth secrets, and more crazy people than should be able to fit in the vicinity of Mexico City. I am drinking in every little bit.

I have to say, as soon as the camera cut away from him angstily wallowing about how he did something horrible years ago and has this horrible secret for which he needs to atone, which is why he's dedicated himself to helping people, to our heroine Marichuy, I knew his terrrrible secret shame had to do with our heroine. I had no patience to sit through 130 episodes before finding out what it is he did, so I went googling, and at first it almost made me dump the telenovela because it seemed his big secret was that when he was younger and drunk, he raped the heroine (!!!!!!!) Ummm, no, not my thing - the days of Luke and Laura are over. But I simply couldn't believe that this would be the case because WTF! It's not a Thai lakorn. So I went digging for more info and I found that actually, years ago, he was drunk, bumped into her, chased after her, smooched her against her wishes, and she ran off. And she didn't see his face.

OK, on one hand, I am quite happy because that means I can enjoy his open-shirted misery without thinking I am drooling over a rapist. On another - holy moley overdramatic much! I don't mean to say that what he did wasn't a jerk move, but seriously! I mean, the way he was writhing in misery on the floor of his library (in a strategically-unbuttoned shirt), you'd think he murdered somebody! And the way heroine kept going on and on how she had this terrible secret she will never reveal that ruined her life - ummmmm, whut? I can see why finding out that your bf went drunk-chasing after ladies might want you to reconsider dating him, but to consider that that encounter ruined your life? WTF! Anyway, it wouldn't be a telenovela without crazy drama.

So yeah, it's crazy, it's romance-driven, it's cheesy as hell and it has a hero who looks like a sexy rentboy (as opposed to supposedly respected doctor. ROFL):

I am so very very in.

Apparently so were a lot of people, because there are an insane amount of MVs on youtube. Have one (bonus for using one of my favorite songs):

Aren't they the most adorable thing ever?

I am actually considering hunting for a DVD set, if one exists (I found and bought an abridged set, with English subs, but I want the uncut version - subs not necessary...My Spanish isn't the greatest, but I can follow a telenovela). Or can anyone point me to torrents? ETA: I believe I found a site that sells unabridged version. It's hella pricy but I waaaaant it enough not to care! (Side note - they have a lot of telenovelas there. I'll see how this purchase works out and, if it does, I am so becoming a customer for life there).

In conclusion - mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, William Levy. Where have you been all my life? My liking for blonds rarely gets satisfied by TV :P

I thought someone on flist might know :)

I am specifically looking for the Brazilian telenovela La Esclava Isaura from 2004-2005. The 1976 version was the first telenovela I ever saw and I was obsessed with it, precursor of my drama mania. I really want to check out the 'new' version.

I don't need subs as I know the plot backwards-and-forwards.

I can find Russian sites that sell the 1976 version (I remember EVERYONE went nuts for the dubbed version back then) but nothing on 2004 one - it doesn't help that I know about two words in Portuguese thus my searching is hampered. I don't care where in the world it gets shipped from as long as they ship to US.

Please! Help! Or I'll sic Leoncio and his evil mustache on you!

I have a sudden craving for a cheesy 80s movie. Recommend me? I don't mind if I've seen it before. Just no fantasy please, because 80s fantasy gives me hives.

This week I saw two rather different movies based on the same idea: imagining a literary figure's life as if it was one of his/her works. The movies? Becoming Jane (Jane Austen) and Moliere (self-evident). BJ was a fun trifle which I didn't mind paying $10 for, even if it wasn't the most awesome movie ever. It had about as much in common with life of Austen as it did with JRR Tolkien but it was enjoyable. Anne Hathaway was gorgeous and James McAvoy incredibly charming as Tom Lefroy. It was a very luid movie and, even if not overly clever, did sweep me into the romance. You could feel the chemistry and the desperation.

As to Moliere? Oh. OH. I loved it incredibly much. It was the movie BJ was trying to be: funny and clever and oh-so-brilliantly incorporating bits not just from the plays but the spirit of them itself. In comparison, BJ was a glorified Austen fanfic, and a florid one at that. Moliere was about so many things: exuberance, and facades (when to keep them and to lose them) and clever people doing stupid things, and stupid people doing clever things, and just...all the performances. And love and pragmatism and loss and laughter. So, so GOOD.

I adored it to bits because I love Moliere (I first came across him as a third-grader, when I watched a filmed theatrical performance of Tartuffe on TV. Shortly after I got my hands on our family's two volume Moliere edition and devoured them. I've rearead them fairly regularly since) but Mr. Mousie hasn't read him and still loved it.

And to end ona random note, here is a MV for Poor Nastya (Bednaya Nastya), a Russian telenovela. I stumbled on it by accident and am SO curious now. Period clothes and kissing and angst. YES. Plus, hey, I won't need subs for once :)

Mmmm, the lead is a hottie. I wonder where I can find this.

ETA: OMG, I just looked up the plot. The heroine is a talented young actress who could climb the pinnacle of success (professionally or be a mistress of someone important). Except? She is a serf. (Gotta love 19th century Russia). To make it all better? Her OTP is a nobleman. Heeee. There are 17 other otps. Maybe not 17, but seems so. Oh MAN. I just bought it :)
