1. Resurrection looks like it's winning 'what shall Dangermousie watch and post about' poll. I think there are 6 hours left but I doubt any other drama is going to overcome it. Twins, revenge, true love with a quasi-sister and TWO Uhm Tae-Woongs, here I come. I am really looking forward to it as I adored its 'successor' The Devil.

2. I am so going to watch Tazza ASAP (yup, it's that drama about gamblers with Jang Hyuk, Han Ye Seul and Kim Min Joon) - Iloved what I've seen of it when it was airing but the subs were really slow so I gave up. Well, it's all subbed. Mmmmmm. Here is a MV:

3. It looks like KBS is going to have my allegiance for the rest of the year - they are going to show Take Care of the Lady with Yoon Eun Hye starting in August (YEH plus butlers!); then after that IRIS in October (a.k.a. my most anticipated drama of the last two years!); then Chuno (Jang Hyuk, Han Hyo Joo, runaway slaves!).

4. Out of the kdramas about to start or which have just started, I plan to check out Dream (Joo Jin Mo boxing) and Swallow the Sun (as soon as subs for first ep are out).

5. Official proof I am shallow: I checked out a bit of Over the Rainbow and will be staying far far away: the lead has the most in-your-face case of lazy eye - I cannot watch a drama where I want to give the leading man plastic surgery every time I see him.

6. Somebody talk me out of watching Summer Scent, the one of the seasons dramas where he falls in love with the woman who has the heart of his dead fiancee. Oy.

I've liked what I've seen of Tazza a lot so far (first two episodes) but have been a little too swamped with Kingdom of the Winds and East of Eden to catch up with the subbed eps 3 and 4 and to keep up with the drama as zealously as I would like but I have just got a major incentive to do so:

Incentive 1:

Incentive 2:

It's funny, all three dramas I am interested in this season, even if they are very different in basic stories and time-periods, involve protagonists giving into darkness for revenge and/or sheer survival, strong 'tarnished' (as opposed to conventionally pure or happy-cooky) women as heroines, and the twistedness and all-powerfulness of family bonds of brotherhood/parenthood, biological or assumed, and twisted out of their natural channels by the harshness of the world.

In other news, I never started When It's At Night (with Lee Dong Gun and Kim Sunah which aired earlier in the year) despite the deliciousness of it's premise, because it was picked up by BON Fansubs and they are notoriously slow (I was right. The drama finished months before and only 3 eps are subbed or look like they will ever be subbed) but seeing GIFs like the below makes me wish someone else would pick up the damn drama for subbing! I mean, it's LDG and KSA! They are both really popular! Argh.

More GIFs: All Kissing, All the Time )

Yes. They are secret agents who solve art crime. With their tongues, apparently.

You know, I could spend the whole drama happy watching Goni's utterly open and adorkable adoration of Nan Sook and her happiness in having it. Seeing that this is a kdrama, however, I foresee that their 5 minutes of happiness are almost up and we are going to enter the land of angst soon.

Tazza does have a psychotically hot cast, doesn't it? I can't decide whether I find this cast, or the EoE or KotW cast sexier.

In other news, I have no idea what is going on in this bit of preview for ep 15 of East of Eden, but whatever it is, it's making me glee.

I am too tired to watch more of Tazza today than finishing ep 1 and half of ep 2, but I am in love (subs are out for the first three eps).

Father of Main Character, how about when you are dying from gambling losses, you tell your kid 'don't gamble' instead of 'you must win.' WTF?

Also, Jang Hyuk and Kim Min Joon make the hottest BFFs in history. And I love watching Han Ye Seul dance. And the scene where Jang Hyuk, Han Ye Seul, and Kim Min Joon were running from the cops made me literally make noises of glee.

Because I am sort of insane and think I can keep up with three dramas at once, I started Tazza, the currently running kdrama about the ups and downs of a professional gambler and love, luck and revenge.

Tazza boasts one of the hottest (and coolest) kdrama casts out there, with the four principal roles being played by Jang Hyuk (Thank You, Robbers), Kim Min Joon (Damo, In-soon is Pretty), Han Ye Seul (Fantasy Couple, Nine-Tailed Fox), and Kang Sung Yan (Let's Get Married, Single Father is in Love).

I am about half an ep in, so it's probably too early to make a judgment, but then when I have not been rash? I love it. It's cynical, fast-paced, and with an underpinning of angst. Jang Hyuk excels at playing cynical, even hard-bitten guys whose exterior brusqueness is a way of coping with past wounds, and who do have a melty heart under there if you know how to reach it. Plus, so sexy! Goni is not a nice person, but every time he smiles, I forget to care!

Anyway, there is childhood love, tragedy, and a lot of games of chance. Plus suits. What's not to like?

Here's some clips from ep 4. All I was able to find as a vid on youtube :)

One of my fave scenes from East of Eden.

Mmmm.

Shippy.

In other news, Viikii apparently also has Tazza with subs. *scream*

I know what I am watching once I catch up on my East of Eden (one ep) and Kingdom of the Winds (2 ep) backlog. Which does mean I will be watching three two-hour+ shows a week. 7 hours. Whoa.

The other two big-ticket dramas of the season. Painter of the Wind and Beethoven Virus neither seem to draw me in. PotW looks gorgeous in all the stills, but for some reason I am getting the sense of detail-oriented and slow-moving and not really my thing. Better as a movie than a drama, if that makes sense. I am not a huge fan of any of the actors so there is no inducement there.

As to BV, maybe I am just burned out on romcom dramas lately. Or maybe I sense the gigantic potential of the ending tp turn into another Powerful Opponents mess (yes, am still bitter over that :P). Or maybe I just like bigger stakes this season: revenge and redemption of Tazza, fights for the Kingdom and family and very existence of KotW, revenge and rise against opression in EoE. So the whole 'will an orchestra work' doesn't seem to compete.

Or maybe I am just shallow and Song Seung Heon, Song Il Gook and Jang Hyuk are much more appealing to me than the male leads of BV and PotW :P

Sometimes I think it's bizarre that I am learning Korean history (at least pre-1900 history) through dramas.

But then I did learn most of my French history through Alexandre Dumas and that really isn't any different.

Plus this:

Is a lot more fun way to learn history :)

Much larger versions of above behind cut )

In other news, I have finished the first episode of East of Eden and it's excellent. Really excellent. It makes me think of an adpatation of one of those literary works about generations and socioeconomics. Basically a Korean-fied version of a Zola novel.

And there is some really great narrative cinematography. For example, I never thought this image could be horrifying.

Which makes at least two dramas this fall which are excellent. The dry spell is over (now I wish the subs for Tazza were already out, but KST is slower than WITHS2).

Well, I'll console with looking at the male lead of EoE:

You know what keeps shocking me? A lot of kdrama actors are both good-looking and good actors. I am not used to such a combination! :P
