Randomly scouring viki, I came across the 2011 Nicholas Tse/Charlene Choi fantasy drama Sword Heroes Fate [sic]. Now, you may not realize it, but I have an utterly irrational obsession with Nic Tse. There are a bunch of actors I like better, but there isn't any other actor where I will watch a drama from beginning to end simply because he's in it, whether I like the drama itself or not. I am not sure whether it's the hotness (stick the man in a wuxia, give him a sword and long hair, and he looks utterly at home) or the fact that he was the star of very first wuxia drama I've ever seen (Handsome Siblings, about which more below) and I've imprinted, like a baby duck.

Anyway, SHF is huge huge fun! It starts out in 2030, where Nic and Charlene are a long-time couple whose relationship is on the skids. But it is all about to change when the company where Charlene works unveils a new virtual reality game - you can 'transform' into an ancient Tang person (while keeping your memories and personality, of course) and play the game as if you are in it. Only while Charlene and Nic are both in it during the trial run, a mysterious bad guy (hint: it's the cute puppy guy who makes dolls for orphans in his spare time, LOL) blocks the players from exiting the game so they are trapped. Not only that, but he causes Charlene to lose her memories so she now believes she is her Tang persona - a famous period beauty who has no memories of Nic and their life together. So now Nic must find a magical jade in hopes it will restore her memories. Oh, and Charlene becomes Nic's enemy and a member of an evil cult. Not sure what else will go on but I am sure Nic will be stoic yet angsty and people will get stabbed. Guys, couples' therapy would have been so much easier, honest!

Have a trailer:

Anyway, I watched the first ep and it was a great deal of fun when, to my horror, I realized that only the first ep was subbed so far. Nooooo!!!! *wail wail wail* So I decided to sate my Nic craving by digging out their 2007 drama The Spirit of the Sword. I saw the first ep of TSotS ages ago and really liked it. My cdrama list is getting more and more insane. Have a cute MV from that drama:

And since we are on it, have a MV of Handsome Siblings, Nic/Fan Bing Bing couple. The drama itself is hugely uneven (the Dicky Cheung storyline made me want to kill things) but NT/FBB were totally amazing and are still one of my favorite otps of all time - he's an angsty assassin forbidden to love, she is a tough sane fighter girl who makes him break that rule, angst angst shippiness amazing insane evil parents (his adopted mother still takes the cake for the most psycho drama parent), plus more awesomeness.

I really want to watch Wallace Huo's Iljimae but it's not out yet. Still, it gave me quite a craving for period/wuxia cdramas.

After careful consideration (careful consideration = looking at MVs and seeing which of them had hot people and production values which did not make the drama look as if it was filmed in the producer's basement), I settled on 2007 Spirit of the Sword which features two hunky warriors, two tough ladies, two love stories, a lot of swordfights and even more angst. I was especially influenced by the fact that the lead was played by Nicholas Tse for whom I have quite an irrational fondness. I am not crazy enough to think he's a good actor, but the guy is gorgeous, angsts well, and looks completely at home in period clothes and with a sword. I have seen complaints from purists that this drama does not adhere to the novel it's based on at all (the main character in this is a minor character in the book) but as I've never read the book, I don't care. I have also seen complaints that too much time is devoted to the love stories, to which I say, bring it on!

Anyway, opening theme, which hopefully gives some taste of the drama:

I will let you know how it goes :)
