I am pretty sick - some really nasty stomach bug is making me miserable to no end. So I ensconced myself in bed with some ginger ale and my favorite comfort reading for sick days - Mayu Shinjo's delicious, trashy Sensual Phrase. It always cheers me right up.

I am not sure what it is about it that I like so much about this x-rated, melodramatic emofest - maybe the belief that anything can be cured by good sex. Hero acquiring drug addiction courtesy of evil half-brother? Situation can be fixed through sex. Crazy fangirls acctacking with knives? Situation can be fixed through sex. Writer's block? Situation can be fixed through sex. Nasty photographer stalking heroine and trying to break up heroine and hero? Situation can be fixed through sex. Double suicide attempt? Situation can be fixed through sex. Nasty childhood trauma? Situation can be cured through...you guessed it...sex. I am not sure about the scientific accuracy of that prescription but points for consistency. According to SP, we can even achieve world peace if we have enough sex. :P About the only thing that can't be fixed through sex is rape, which is shocking enough considering it's the same woman who wrote 'he rapes me means he loves me' manga that is Haou Airen. Maybe it's because in SP it's not the hunky hero who is doing it?

Anyway, I dug out my SP volumes* and plan to use them to make me forget being sick. Mayu Shinjo says nothing about stomach bugs being cured by (reading about) sex, but who knows - it's worth a try. If it can heal knife wounds and abuse trauma, a bit of pukey badness ought to be a piece of cake.

*Mr Mousie points out I'll have to hide them once Baby Mousie gets older because getting your sex ed through Mayu Shinjo is a bad idea, so I might as well enjoy them now.

I've cleaned up most of my Rock Rock Rock caps (there may be an additional small batch of more ep 4 caps coming) so here they are. Warning (though is it really the kind of thing one needs to warn about?): 90% of these are of No Min Woo, in part because the drama is all about him, all the time, and in part because he's ridiculously gorgeous.

Not sure if this reference is going to make sense to a lot of my flist, but after watching this, I've finally found someone to play Sakuya in the in-my-head adaptation of Sensual Phrase - sexy and messed-up rocker? Yup - perfect. I've never really found anyone who fit my mental idea of it before but now I have. (Obviously this is only in my head but who cares as chances of SP being adapted as live action anywhere = zero, due to it being majorly x-rated).

Caps caps caps - and remember Just Say No )

I am seriously obsessed with A Star in My Heart. It just hits all my kinks perfectly. It's light but not too light, it has angst but not ridiculously so, it has a spunky heroine, and ridiculously sexy hero, and the two are so functional together.

Oh, and that little reptilian part of my brain which considers Sensual Phrase my favorite manga is revelling in the whole rocker-star-falls-for-girl set-up. Oh great, now that I typed it out, I am fantasizing about Ahn Jae Wook as Sakuya. Heee. Mind. Out of the gutter, self. (SP is pretty X-rated). Heeee.

Eps 3 and 4: you know what you can give your son who just got out of the army? How about a trip to a brothel? He's gonna LOVE that! )

I also cheated and watched the end of the drama and OMG fangirl shippy heart is so sated.

I've had a sort of stressful week so I turned for comfort to my ultimate comfort read (and guilty pleasure), Mayu Shinjo's manga Sensual Phrase. It's not 'good', objectively speaking, but it's incredibly entertaining and always makes me feel better.

I posted about SP before, but the very short summary of this 18-volume manga (yes, I own all of it :P) is that it follows its heroine Aine, who is a high school girl who becomes a lyricist for a visual band Lucifer, and its hero Sakuya, the band's vocalist and Aine's OTP. They get together early (one of the things I love in stories, but they so rarely give it to me: a couple together dealing with things) and have a lot (and I mean A LOT) of sex while overcoming more and more outlandish obstacles. (Seriously, if you are prudish, be warned: at the store I bought SP at only the first volume was not shrink-wrapped and it was R-rated. The rest of the volumes are easily NC-17).

It's basically a manga that probably took every kink my teennybopper self had and put it shamelessly out there. Yay for that!

Plus, I just love how cheerful the story is. It's not fluffy because it has gobs of angst but both Aine and Sakuya are sort of teflon people and angst that would probably require years of therapy in other people only adds a bit of spice to the manga without bringing it down. It's delish. Despite being constantly threatened, kidnapped, blackmailed, forced to give up the man she loves and at one point even raped, all she needs is hugs, ILYs and healing sex and she is bright-eyed and ready to move on (I wonder if it says something troubling about me that I don't remember by whom she was raped, except that it was one of those periodic baddies. But I do remember every detail of Sakuya going to kill the bad guy, and them (Sakuya and Aine) slitting their wrists together, and the healing shower sex :P). And as for Sakuya, his past as a child whore and a product of rape who grew up with an alcoholic mother who hated him, not to mention things like temporarily being turned into a drug addict by his evil half-brother or suffering an almost fatal car accident (while protecting Aine, of course) does not seem to interfere in the least with him being a hunky McMuffin psychotically devoted to his woman.

There is something...wholesome about that, just as there is about the very traditional happy ending :P

Basically if I read a couple of volumes of SP, I always feel better.

So there :) This is a really good write-up on the manga, with summaries, basically explaining better than I am why I like it so...

If they ever turned it into a drama it would be so entertaining though they would have to WAY tone down the sex :P

This morning continues pretty good: the sky is shinily blue, I am wearing my favorite sweater/skirt combo (corded, form-fitting turtleneck of black-gray-pale pink and down to the ground a-line skirt, dark brown with a few thick, roughly patterned black/gray/pale pink stripes). Plus my favorite black boots, and I got complimented on my looks this morning by metro guys :D

I think I am now in that point in my drama cycle, where I madly crave jdrama (just as a few months ago I was in kdrama cycle, and before that twdrama). So a lot of this are rambles about potential candidates.

Anyway. Since this is long, varied, and rather rambly, I am going to cut, to spare the flist.

Various, relating to Japanese entertainment )

And now, about manga )

Heh. Apparently Sensual Phrase (manga) has been made into an anime, totally PG-rated, where all the clothes stay on! (As opposed to the manga, where, sweet love story or not, I spent half the time going 'is this depicting what I think it is?')

Heh. Aine and Sakuya are totally child-friendly now. Heeeeee. You have no idea how it amuses me.

See this MV:

I might check out just the Aine and Sakuya bits anyway (I know the anime is more about the band which is not something that interests me), for sheer amusingness factor.

I am assuming little things like drug addiction, Sakuya being a former child whore, sex in all the positions prescribed by the Kama Sutra, and Aine's rape by evil what-s-his-name are not going to be included.

For those who are wondering, SP is a manga with no redeeming social value that I totally adore, where our winsome heroine, Aine, ends up being a lyricist to an edgy popular band, Lucifer, and ends up in a torrid, angsty, very shoujo and very explicit relationship with its lead singer, Sakuya.

Mmmm....I'd say it's a guilty pleasure except I refuse to feel guilt.
