Why do I not have any Bu Bu Jing Xin icons? (Ah, cdramas. Overall, much as I enjoy Korean period dramas, nothing does it for me like period cdramas - they fit me ideally in terms of structure, pacing, approach.)

Checking out Huan Zhu Ge Ge, which is harmless dumb fun, made me crave a quality Qing story and, because I have no sense of self-preservation, I am currently selectively Ruoxi/Four-exclusively rewatching BBJX. Next, I shall progress to hitting myself over the head with a hammer for entertainment.

God, this is such a gorgeous, nuanced drama which manages to be both restrained and passionate, romantic and soul-destroying. GUUUUUUUH. It is also the one drama where I keep the raws just for capping.

And guess what, my obsession is your gain, because I bring you caps from this amazing scene in ep 17. (I took close to 500 caps, before I went culling. The less said...)

More more more MOAR!!!! )

It's funny because before the drama aired, I remember blabbering all over that BBJX story sounded boring, the trailers didn't work for me, Nicky Wu was much too old for Liu Shi Shi and looked like a gargoyle in Qing get-up. And then...ahahahaha. So much crow. I loved the story and thought LSS and NW had ridiculous chemistry with a few spare Universes to burn. And, while I still think Qing look is not for Nicky (unlike Kevin Cheng, who proved he's god among men, by performing a miracle and looking drop-dead-gorgeous even with the queue), it simply didn't matter - the sheer force of Four's personality and Nicky's charisma in the role, made my quibbles immaterial.

Speaking of the doomed pair, any rumors of them being paired again? Mainland seems to like to pair successful couples again, and if they do so here, I can pretend this is a happy AU which didn't end up murdering my soul. If that is too much to beg for, I'll settle for LSS with Kevin Cheng, if you are listening, TPTB! (Btw, when is Kevin's Mystery in the Palace coming out? I want!!! Except for Feng Shao Feng, he's the only man I've seen who's managed to remain gorgeous even with the half-bald/queue look).

So, I was checking my ep 13 download to see it dled properly and I came upon this )

MWtS, ILY beyond words!

That's it, I am watching 12/13 raw.

Btw, the leads' chemistry appears as insane as ever, clearly bts didn't put a dent in it at all.

OK, I have to watch Love Keeps Going pretty much right now!

More kissing )

That's how it's done, kdramas! Add to this that I adore both Mike He and Cyndi Wang and we are set. (I confess I never really fell for Sunny Happiness, even if I enjoyed it, which this seems rather similar to, but for me, Cyndi >>>> Janine).

In other vid news, while I am going crazy waiting for subs for ep 12 of Myung Wol the Spy, have this awesome MV:

Speaking of MVs, have this gorgeous one on Warrior Baek Dong Soo (I love this vidmaker):

You know, despite Yeo Un's fall from grace, I ship him and Ji Sun more than ever. In part because Dong Soo should be Jin Joo's but because I find their dynamics so interesting and chemistry so lovely and it will be even more interesting now he's gone over to the dark side, everything she opposes. I bet the drama will end with DS/JJ, Yeo Un dead and Ji Sun finding peace in a monastery. (Despite their characters being very different I do see one resemblance between them - their lives have been wrecked by their fathers who refused to see them as people but only as symbols.)

Anyone tried Birdie Buddy yet? I am trying but keep getting distracted by our hero's hair:

Dreads is the one hairstyle I do not get the appeal of and to see it in a kdrama about golfers is odd, to say the least. I keep getting completely thrown out of every scene he's in :P

Oh, Yeo Un, why? Why why why why why?

I honestly don't get it - why is he following Cheon's orders? It's not as if he's still that abused kid who sees no way out than to join a gang of assassins? Being with Dong Soo and Cho Rip and the rest of them for years surely showed him another way to live and showed him he's capable of caring and being cared for and there is a way to live as an honorable human being. So why is he still in Cheon's thrall? Is it because he's been told from the cradle it's his destiny to be a monster? But surely he should know he should at least try to fight it! It's not as if he enjoys murder - he's clearly destroyed over having to do it. Plus, I am with Dong Soo - blindly following destiny is stupid - one must fight.

I am afraid I have switched to Team Dong Soo for good.

I have been loving him in the latest eps anyway (the boy is growing up quite amazing) but even if it wasn't for that, I was never one for bad guys. Yeo Un is still fascinating and I wish he had a different father than the psycho monster one who seems to have broken him for life, but ultimately he's old enough to make his own choices - his background is an explanation not an excuse. And the moment he went to stab his old comrades (who were sleeping, no less) I was done with loving him. YSH has ridiculously expressive eyes btw - even with most of his face covered by that mask, you know exactly what he's feeling.

I am going to try doing something new. Let me know if it's a good idea.

The reason I love kdramas so is, in large part, due to their awesome leading men. So I thought I'd do a weekly post highlighting a different one of my favorites.

And the honor of being the first one in the series goes to...ta-dum...Park Shi Hoo.

All about Park Shi Hoo. A monster post )

OK, that took a while :)

FWIW, I am taking requests - you can post in comment if you want someone specific next time.

Is anyone else reminded of Jae Min from Bali every time Ji Heon shows up with his little backpack in Protect the Boss? It's a bit disconcerting, seeing that Bali was one of the darkest, most dysfunctional and intense dramas I've ever seen and PtS is frothy fluff.

I am currently watching ep 7 of The Princess' Man with the same dread as one watches a trainwreck that one knows is coming but is powerless to stop. They are so happy and you know horrible things are just around the corner. I just want to grab them and hide them from the world. I almost wish we'd get on with the murder of his family, his finding out SR's identity and vowing revenge etc because at least it would be out in the open.

Also, I find it reprehensible SR is still not telling him who she is. It was excusable earlier - she was checking out prospective husband, then it was a farewell meeting, then there was no point as he was cold to her. But now? She is starting a relationship with him under a false name! How is she thinking it's going to go? I love her because I understand her - this is her one chance at happiness and she's desperate to not have anything take it away and so she's postponing telling the truth, but it's going to have some nasty consequences.

Of all the airing dramas I am following, Myung Wol the Spy remains my favorite (except for the amazing The Princess' Man, of course). I remain amazed that I am in love with a romcom, breaking a years-long curse.

Ep 11 and MW thoughts in general )

All this delicious angst and it is all BEFORE he finds out she is a North Korean spy! *sluuuuurp*

Preview for ep 12:

He's so very pretty! And actually not in a drama which makes me want to stab self in the eye (I am looking at you, Sunao ni Narenakute!)

I really hope he won't chase after heroine but instead have an awesome secondary OTP with Wang Ji Hye. I do wonder wtf is wrong with him to feel jealous of and want to one-up Ji Heon when JH is a screw-up who can't get anything right and he's the golden boy. That's like beating on a puppy - pretty pointless and kinda mean.

Speaking of JH - three eps, and my impression of him is that he's basically this overgrown kid - impulsive like one, scared like one (he can't sleep without lights on!) and clingy and emotionally vulnerable like one. He and heroine have a pretty adorable, interesting dynamic. She almost mothers him, but not in an icky Oedipal way. There are hints he used to be normal until something happened (I wonder if it was the death of his brother or maybe something else - there is a flashback at the airport with WJH's character where he was going to meet her but then got a phone call, freaked out and got his panic attack in a crowded place - maybe that is why he has agoraphobia, he associates it with whatever he found out on the call). Hmmmm.

u1. Does anyone on my flist plan to check out Can't Lose, the romcom that is replacing Heartstrings next week? I confess I just cannot get interested, despite my love for Choi Ji Woo and Yoon Sang Hyun. I am not that good with kdrama romcoms (which is why my love for Spy Myung Wol is such a delightful surprise) and the premise of divorcing lawyers sets my teeth on edge - lawyer shows and I don't mesh well. Still, YSH/CJW does sound very delightful so I probably will check it out if flisties love it.

2. Subs for first 6 eps of Yamada Takayuki's fantasy jdrama Yuusha Yoshihiko to Maou no Shiro are out. I know what I am doing with my free time. YT is one of very few jactors where I will automatically watch something because he is in it. He is possibly my favorite jdrama actor.

3. Speaking of dramas I am interested in - seeing it's a cable drama, chances of subs or even raws are slim, but I am totally pre-obsessed with Girl K, a three ep kdrama about a high schooler who is actually an assassin seeking revenge for her mother. That's a wonderful upending of the usual revenge tropes and sounds completely up my alley.

It stars Han Groo, who is apparently a pop star, but I am pretty unfamiliar with kpop so I don't know much about her. The MV for the drama (not sure if it's merely 'inspired by' the drama storyline or a trailer) makes me crave this so ridiculously much:

They are so adult and in love and messed-up...

And then he goes off to destroy her family's business...Kang Suk, you are completely screwed up. You broke up with her and ended your 'game' because you are about to move against her family (and told her so, if not in so many words) and now both of you are miserable but all you have to do is to stop. Put the brakes on, for the first time in your life.

have just started ep 1 and, surprisingly (because wacky is a major hit-or-miss for me), I like it. I don't know if I'll be OK with wacky for 16 eps, because in order to stick with a drama I need heart and emotional investment and I don't know if this will have it; but for now, it's entertaining.

Also, this is our first glimpse of Ji Sung:

WTF LOL. Is he supposed to be some sort of major hypochondriac or something?

This is my favorite scene so far and nothing really happens in it, just Kang Suk and Dan Ah waiting for sunrise and talking. This writer does dialogues so well, as I discovered with Gloria.

KS: Have you ever watched a sunrise?
DA: A few times.
KS: Which was the most memorable?
DA: I think the one I saw when I was on a school trip. It was on Mt. Tonghak in Gyeongju. I was surprised to see the big red sun that filled the entire sky. At that moment, it felt like life was wonderful. I haven't had that feeling since then.
KS: I went to Gyeongju on a school trip too.
DA: But you didn't see the sunrise?
KS: I got into a fight with my classmates. My father had come along to treat my teachers to a meal. He wanted me to be the class rep, and he thought a food bribe would help.
DA: Did it?
KS: The day before the election, I got into a fight and almost got suspended. Thanks to that,
I was disqualified.
DA: You sure got into a lot of fights.
KS: I could've become a gangster if I wanted to. They even tried to recruit me.
DA: You were lucky to have a rich family. Otherwise, I'd be talking with a mob boss right now.

KS: I don't think you're the sexy type that mob bosses like.

DA: You never know. I have "Innocence of a Dancer" up my sleeve.
[they both laugh]
KS: I spoiled you. [pause] It wasn't because I had a rich family. I didn't want people pointing their fingers at my father for having a gangster son. The thought of living up to
my father's expectations, and not being able to do what I wanted sometimes frustrated me.
DA: Is that why you fought so hard?
KS: I liked being on the receiving end. I knew I was untouchable after high school graduation. So I let them beat me while they could.
DA: Why...are you so cruel to yourself?

KS: That's a first. People ask me why I'm a cruel person, but not why I'm cruel to myself.
DA: You once told me to love myself more. Take your own advice. Then your life won't be as frustrating.
[KS steps out of the car and talks to himself]

KS: Are you even aware of how cruel I am to you? You stupid woman.

I loooove character development through dialogue but even more do I love knowing what makes these people tick through dialogue and that conversation explains so much about both DA and KS. Therapy!!!

Some delicious shippy caps from recent eps )
