Yup, the anime set in fantasy version of medieval China, whose heroine wants to become a civil servant (click on tag for more summaries).

I stopped a while back because I liked the characters, but there was too much world-building. But I can't help it! I simply must see more of Ryuuki, the Emperor, and the heroine's one-time husband. He is probably one of my Top 10 anime males, what with awesome sword skills, vanity, childish unworldliness, bi-ness, childhood from hell, a huge torch for Shuurei, cheerful energy, and awesome outfits.

Did they ever hook up? Please say yes. I mean, is she blind????? He saved her from assassins and is hot and she will be the most powerful woman in the Empire. Hello, girl, wake up!

Here is a shippy vid:

I am totally amused by how appropriate the song choice is, as it's from The Curse of the Golden Flower, where the imperial family is equally dysfunctional.

Heeee, I was reading more on Ryuuki's background and SQUEE of amusingness. I mean, I knew he was systematically abused by his mother and brothers when he was a kid and his older half-brother Seien was the only one who cared for him (and apparently threatened Ryuuki's mother to get her to stop), but apparently his mother was a former courtesan and the person who eventually killed her was Seien's mother. SQUEE. Who herself got executed for treason. I love the frelled-up imperial family.

Actually, I don't want to watch about Shuurei learning governance. I want to watch about the messed-up imperial family, much more, please. Thanks! It would be awesome. They could make teenage Seien the hero and give him some lady in waiting as an OTP. I don't want administrative info, I want dysfunction!

Ten episodes in, and it’s official: I enjoy SM but it’s not going anywhere near my Top 10.

I have come to the realization that what I ended up watching is really an anime version of a procedural, something I don’t usually do (they exist, I just tend not to seek them out in any media). Only the ‘procedure’ here is the functioning and administration of a fantasy country. And procedurals are not something I particularly love or even have much interest in.

In a way, this is sort of a fantasy C-SPAN, and I have never been one fascinated by world-building. I might be interested to read (and have done so) a book on how the government in e.g. Ancient China or modern-day Ghana, or medieval Florence worked/works, but I don’t think I’d want a weekly show following the government officials of these places. And more importantly, I have even less interest when the world the story is analyzing is fictional. I want the fictional world to be internally coherent and consistent, but developed only to such a degree as to seem real enough. When a large chunk of the story (novel or anime) is occupied by describing the nitty-gritty of the world, I lose interest. One of many reasons I am not huge into fantasy novels.

I don’t particularly have much interest in finding out how the fictional ministry of finance works, in detail. And I really don’t care about the intricacies of governing a remote fictional province which doesn’t exist in RL.

What I want in my anime (and other media) is a tight, unitary plot and/or intense character interactions and relationship (plantonic or romantic) development, and I am forced to conclude that SM is never going to have that. It’s never going to have a Fushigi Yuugi-type fantasy quest story, or any other strongly plot-driven narrative. Most of the anime I have ever loved had a very strong narrative and strong narrative drive, and the more of it, the better (it’s pretty in character that e.g. my favorite of the three Full Metal Panic seasons is the third one, with the sole, intense arc).

EEEEE!

Ryuuki just went super-assassin on the assassins.

OMG.

And wiped them all out without blinking.

And the dying head assassin is all 'you'd make an excellent assassin' and Ryuuki is all 'if I were that kind of person, Shuurei would hate me.'

And then he found Shuurei and cut her ropes/gag off. And OMG, I love Shuurei, because she thanks him and is all 'it's so dark, you must be scared' (he has dark-places phobia) and he just swoops her into this hug and tells her that even if it's dark, as long as he knew she was there, he wasn't. AWWWW. And only then, after being rescued, and also making sure he is OK, does she let go and allow herself to faint.

And then there is various plot stuff and her recovering from the poison and hugging and amusingness and then she announces she is going home because mission accomplished: Ryuuki is all Emperor-like (I love how Seiran tries, very low-key, for her to stay. He is a good older brother). And LOL, everyone has come to say bye to her, and she is worried whether she will get her $$$ and Ryuuki is all 'she married me only for $$$, I feel so used :D' and then is about to offer her more $$$ to stay and his advisors physically cover his mouth before he blunders in. LOL.

And then...

and then...

and then...

he tells her he has something to confess before she leaves. And he leans close and tells her. 'I don't only like men. I like women too.'

AND AND AND AND HE KISSES HER.

In front of everyone. And she is sputtering. LOL. And he is all 'you'll be back.'

OMG.

Heeee.

And all the others are goggling.

How can I not ship them?

Seriously, it's humanly impossible.

ETA: LOL LOL LOL LOL Shuurei, I love you. It's apparently been a month since, and Ryuuki has been sending her love missives by the dozen and she uses the blank sides as paper for her students to practice writing. LOL. And he's apparently been sending over totally ridiculous gifts, like trees and giant blocks of ice (it's really hot). LOL. He is such a Tamaki.

Caps and comments )

Ultimately though, eight eps in, my verdict stands. I enjoy this quite a lot, but even though it's more modern in art design being newer, I prefer Fushigi Yuugi. This doesn't have the tongue-in-cheekness, or the crazy pace, or the dramatics and the star-crossed OTP of FY. FY was, after all, a romance/perilous quest story. SM seems much more a social study/world-building/character interaction piece. There isn't enough angst and adrenaline and crazy strong emotions to make it take over FY's place in my heart. Hmmm, I really should continue with my FY rewatch.

So, to blab on:

You disappoint me, Evil Counsellor.

I kept hoping that with your squinty glare and abundant mustache, you could make our heroes' lives a living hell for at least a few episodes.

But I hate to point out to you, Sir, that your plot has holes the size of a truck at a demolishion derby.

(Oh, [livejournal.com profile] katranna, ep 6 is where the plot kicks in, with assassination attempts, coups, kidnappings and lots of swords).

In which I point out the folly of fictional character's ways, spoilers through ep 6 )

on Ryuuki and Shuurei and other fun things. Spoilers through ep 6 )

Cute screencaps )

I think, so far, even though the animation is prettier (as this is my newer) and Shuurei is much smarter than Miaka, I do prefer Fushigi Yuugi, because FY had that deliciously post-modern tongue-in-cheek vibe where it was poking fun and metaing on itself. And also, FY had a hell of a lot more angst. I can't see how they can top what happens to Tamahome's family in FY or the death-toll (not that I want them too, one day bawling is enough).

It is, however, utterly awesome.

I think [livejournal.com profile] fenrir_khan just might be my newest favorite person.

Why?

Because Saiunkoku Monogatari, the anime recommended by her (at least I think you are a 'she,' am I right? You know you are an internet junkie when...:P) ATE MY LIFE. Or is about to do so.

It is everything I want in my anime, and so rarely find:
(a) gorgeous colors and fluid animation
(b) full of common-sense heroine who does NOT have a special destiny
(c) lots of hot boys. With pointy stabbity swords
(d) a fantasy period setting
(e) messed-up-beyond-measure pasts for male protagonists
(f) Shiny period clothes!
(g) ROMANCE!!!!!!

What is SM about? It is set in a fantasy realm that resembles medieval China somewhat. Our heroine, Shuurei, is persevering, intelligent, and highly born.

Here is Shuurei:

Normally, that would guarantee you a pretty decent life, but Shuurei's family, while full of noble blood, has fallen on hard times financially and is pretty darn poor. In fact, Shuurei helps ends meet by teaching and other jobs. It's not portrayed as anything particularly hideous for her or for the family, but it does open the door to our set-up.

Which is this: the Emperor's advisors are not so secretly feeling like tearing out their hair. The new Emperor, Ryuuki, who has been ruling for only half a year, shows no interest whatsoever in governance, or in doing much of anything, really. Not only that, but he doesn't even have the decency to marry properly and provide the country with an heir, and there are rumors that he prefers men and has no desire to venture outside that particular preference.

Here is Ryuuki:

Well, come hell or high water, they want to try to fix a situation in any possible way before a civil war breaks out, or some other country tries to invade them. So where can they find an arranged bride for Ryuuki that is both high-born enough to be acceptable and desperate enough to want to marry him!

BINGO.

Shuurei is offered an irresistable proposition: enter the palace as Ryuuki's intended bride. Teach him about governance at least to a degree where he does something (everyone knows Shuurei is super-brainy, activist one), and if it works in six months, Shuurei gets a peaceful divorce and a big fat wad of cash. And she doesn't have to worry about wifely duties as she is lacking the Y chromosome.

Shuurei accepts and enters the palace. At her side is her best friend, the family's sole remaining retainer, a mysterious young man who is silent about his past, named Seiran.

Here is Seiran:

Will Shuurei accomplish her task? (Answer: She is a go-getter heroine, what do you think?) Does Ryuuki really prefer men? (Answer: No. And this is not a spoiler, have you seen the shippy credits, people? But he does have ISSUES.) What is Seiran's past and his connection to Shuurei and Ryuuki? (Answer: Too good to spoil. But it involves ISSUES).

Let the awesomeness begin!

Unspoilery caps from first ep )

I have watched the first ep, which was awesome, and then in looking up info, caved in and read spoilers and OH MY.

OH MY.

I am SO excited.

Actually, if I had to pick who to ship Shuurei with, based on my usual 'most messed up woobie in need of a good woman,' I'd have a really hard choice. Luckily, this doesn't seem to be too much of a triangle. Yay.

Heavy duty spoilers. Seriously, do not READ unless you are a spoiler nut like me )

Did I mention that both Seiran and Ryuuki are supposed to be super-awesome swordfighters?

And that there is a bunch of other cool characters?

It makes me think of Fushigi Yuugi a little (which is a mixed blessing for some on my flist, but I adored FY beyond measure. It's in my Top 3 anime). Only if Miaka had common sense and no destiny, and the story was much more Miaka/Hotohori. (I am a rabid Tamahome/Miaka shipper in FY but I adored Hotohori. Mock me about my literal hysterics when he died and I will ANNIHILATE you.) Mmmmmm...

And I end (being me), on a Ryuuki/Shuurei shippy vid. I don't think it's spoilery, but that's me.
