So: weekend drama tally.

1. I have finished Romantic Princess, the twdrama from last year. I think I could feel my brain dying. The drama design was very cute (almost as cute as Wu Zun) but OMG...the stupid. It burns. I think my problem with RP was that in any good drama (or what I consider good drama, I realize everybody has subjective differences in opinion) no matter how improbable the situation, the emotional response of characters to these situations rings true, and the characters themselves come across as consistent, believable people. In RP, the reactions lacked any depth and emotion and the characters were not people, but a collection of superficial traits stuck on good-looking dolls. They did not feel real.

2. I have also finished Hotaru No Hikari, which was just as awesome as it started being as. I don't feel like metaing about it, but it was wonderful and highly recommended. Ayase Haruka was great and so was Fujiki Naohito (*sigh*). I am such a sucker for friends who fall in love. And oh, the ending was the funniest, most adorable thing. I also liked the secondary characters and that Makoto was a sweet, if incompatible guy, not a villain.

Hmmm, seeing that I adored Sapuri, and thought HnH was great, and even KwP ended up working for me, once I realized what it was and what it wasn't, I suppose I can't claim any more that I don't like office dramas :)

3. Zettai Kareshi, first episode. OMG.

So much LOVE.

The story revolves around Riko, a sweet, oldfashioned, and unlucky in love office worker employed by a cake company. One day, through various circumstances, she ends up, without realizing it, purchasing a 'robot,' whom she names Night Tenjo. Night has been programmed to be the perfect boyfriend (of course), but can Riko have feelings for a thing? Can a thing actually have feelings? Oh, and how about Soshi, her senior at the company, who might actually be the real, flesh-and-blood guy she is looking for?

First ep was a total delight. If this keeps up, this might end up a favorite.

I adore the manga this is based on (am a Watase fangirl in general) but, oddly, didn't mind any of the changes. In a way, this is like Hana Yori Dango adaptation: they take the gist of the story and the situation and rearrange it into something same yet different.

I have not seen any of the three actors in anything else (except for Soshi who was Nanba-Senpai in Hana Kimi, but I exited that show really hastily, and he left no impression on me), but I adore them here. Aibu Saki is awkwardly adorable as Riko. You could see both her cookiness and her vulnerability and I just want to squish her. Hayami Mokomichi as Night is spot-on with his slightly robotic and stiff movements and expression. He is 'human' and yet he is 'off' somehow, too. Oh, and Night is just as much a darling in the live-action as he was in the manga. So sweet and stupid :P But, also developing feelings on his own. And I really loved the little subversive point in the manga which is kept in the drama: of course you can have the perfect shoujo boyfriend who will be tall and handsome and utterly devoted: he is programmed to be! In RL, perfection does not really exist.

I have seen Mizushima Hiro in Hana Kimi, but I disliked that drama and never got much into it. He is awesome here, as (in the biggest change from the manga) the playboyish but kind Soshi. I am swooning for him.

And speaking of...Such a pretty drama!

Screencaps galore )

Now they are adapting Zettai Kareshi, I think they should adopt Ayashi No Ceres (if Takeshi Kaneshiro was a decade younger, he is the picture-perfect Toya), or if that is too weird for TV, Fushigi Yuugi. Takizawa Hideaki was born to play Tamahome.

4. Neither of these being available, and with my craving for jdramas (I go through stages of kdrama-heavy watching, jdrama heavy watching etc), I started the excellent (so far) Aishiteiru to Itte Kure, a 1995 drama with Toyokawa Etsushi and Tokiwa Takako. She is an aspiring actress, he is a painter deaf since childhood.

Here is a MV for it:

It's excellent so far, and both leads are pitch-perfect. I have a problematic relationship with some older dramas (even Long Vacation didn't work for me) but this is excellent.

Though I might alternate between this and Yoshitsune. Takizawa Hideaki with a sword! I think [livejournal.com profile] meganbmoore is the only one who've seen it on my flist. Do they do Shizuka's dance in the drama? I always loved that part of the story.

1. Yay! You know the moment you get so excited in a bookstore? I am so giddy because I found, completely randomly and not looking for it, a complete English translation of Vis and Ramin, a Persian epic/romantic poem, I’ve loved since childhood.

You know you want to read about my childhood fixation on ancient Persian lovers )

Anyway, I’ve only been able to find abridged translations since, so this full one makes me incredibly happy.

2. Because Mr. Mousie and I saw a production of Macbeth recently, I was inspired to pull out arguably my favorite novel ever, The King Hereafter by Dorothy Dunnett, for a reread. It’s about historical underpinnings of Macbeth (it posts that the Earl Thorfinn of Orkney and Macbeth were the same person). I love this book so much, even this third time, but something tells me I will still be unable to finish it. I have never finished it precisely because I love it so, and I know what happens at the ending, and I can’t stand it. I just might love Thorfinn even more than Lymond (also created by the same author, hmmm), which would make him my favorite fictional hero, and…*gets all emo*. I also love that he is so not like Lymond and Dunnett does not repeat her characters. Just as Groa is very little like Philippa.

3. Mr. Mousie and I watched Season 3 ep “Dirty Hands” of Battlestar Galactica. I haven’t seen it before, and it temporarily made me hate both Adama and Roslin. Up with the underclass!

Character ramblings )

4. On a much less intellectual note, Romantic Princess continues silly fun. Just something I’d enjoy before or after a long day. Plus, whatever else the OTTness, Jin’s problem is real enough: he likes the girl he is arrange-engaged to, but staying by her would mean giving up any individuality and striking on his own, but being trapped in the family forever. His trying to convince himself not to fall for her is kind of awesome. But Cai is still my favorite.

1. Volume 19 of Fruits Basket is adorableness itself. Rambles on the volume )

2. Heroine of Romantic Princess, you are sort of silly, aren’t you? What kind of a ditz reacts to the news that the guy she got engaged to (admittedly against his wishes), got her and his friend drunk and stuck them in bed together in order to take compromising pictures to blackmail you to get out of the engagement, by ‘aaaaaw, he really must be desperate, poor woobie.’ WTF? Makino Tsukushi (or her Taiwanese counterpart, Shan Cai) would have crippled him for life!

I have to say, Cai, and not Jin, is my fave of the guys so far. He is a total troublemaker and a playboy, but he has fun with it. And I love his snark about Heroine being skinny, because, thank you, YES. So, yay, Cai. Even if he does look girlier than me. (Mr. Mousie’s comment, in passing by, at a Cai and Heroine scene was ‘you know, change a few angles of the jaw, and it could be a lesbian scene.’)

3. Doctor Who Pompeii ep was awesome. Awesome. I love Donna quite madly now. And am totally psyched about the Ooooooood.

Twdramas were my first drama loves (mars and Meteor Garden were my first and second drama, respectively) and you never forget your first love, do you?

That is why, much as I might love the slickness of kdrama and the understatedness of jdrama, few things will get me as giddy or emo as a well-done twdrama.

So, after I’ve done my Top Ten Jdramas and my Top 20 Kdramas, the next logical step is the Top 10 Twdramas/Cdramas, isn’t it?

Only I kept putting it off because I yet haven’t seen some which might very well make it into my Top 10: My Lucky Star (which seems to have been universally loved), Corner with Love, The Outsiders 2 (Chances of that one making into my Top 10? 95%). And I haven’t even gotten to At Dolphin Bay, Lavender, Delicious Relationship etc. It’s like a person who only started reading listing their favorite books.

But I finally got tired of waiting to watch them (am impatient), so here is my Top 10 twdrama/cdrama list. Once again, same thing applies: only finished ones (or nearly), as unspoilery as I can make it, blahblahblah.

List, with summaries, reasons, pics, and vids )

In conclusion, yes, Vic Zhou is still my favorite drama actor, all these dramas later.

Things that make me happy today:

1. Battlestar Galactica season 4 starts this weekend! YES! Can’t wait! It seems like forever. Starbuck, Adama, Roslin, Apollo, Helo, Athena, Six, Anders, Tigh, Leoben, Tyrol etc etc. And…sigh…Baltar. He annoys me a lot, if for no other reason than that I want to forcibly shampoo him, but ahh, well.

I really need to embark on a mad BSG rewatch. Will buy S3 later in the week.

2. Doesn’t Doctor Who start this weekend as well? YES again.

3. As far as I remember, the remaining eps of Moonlight should air sometime this month? I miss my angsty vampires and the spunky reporters who love them! Me want. Now.

4. I don’t even watch Prison Break but I am glad both on principle and because I know it made happy a number of my flisters that spoiler )

5. Romantic Princess continues to be so incredibly cute! And the OTP is so incredibly shippable and squishable. It really does come across as a rather more well-integrated Rui and a Makino. Eee. I am always a push-over for spunky girls and reserved boys who are flabbergasted by them. Spoilers for first couple of eps )

6. I thought I couldn’t be any more excited about the upcoming kdrama Powerful Opponents, about the first lady bodyguard in the Korean version of White House. I was wrong! The guy who is going to be playing the President’s Son (please, PLEASE tell me she is assigned to protect him and that he will be her OTP) is not only the Secondary Guy in Smile Again that I fell madly for and have been scouring the net to see if he was in anything else, but:
a. he is younger than she is!
b. he is supposed to be “egotistic, tough outside but was hurt inside, a typical rebellious character.” LOL. Yes, please.
c. I saw some promo pics and he gets the snot kicked out of him. I approve.
d. Some awesome pics. Pics here )

7. I am finally going to restart the super long (126 eps!) soapy melodrama about hot (currently ex) serf actresses and the angsty aristocrats who love them, a.k.a. Bednaya Nastya. When I stopped, Vladimir was just carted off to be questioned for treason, as poor Anna stared uncomprehendingly at it all (to be fair, she isn't too bright) after her great success singing at the ball and exchanging flaming glances of passion with said Vladimir. Heeee. This never eases up, does it :)

Heeee. This never eases up, does it :)

Pics here )

There are few ways to cope with jetlag better than spending 5am in a bathtub, watching Romantic Princess, the delicious Taiwanese drama tale of a modern-day Cinderella, Xiao Mai (Angela Zheng) who turns out to be a long-lost grand-daughter of a gazillionaire who wants her to marry his chosen successor, the icily displeased Jin (Wu Chun).

I wanted something incredibly fluffy and only with a smidgeon of angst, and so I remembered I started this and loved it. See post here with summary and pics.

Angela Zheng is pretty, Wu Chun is gorgeous (and now I crack up every time I see him, because I remember total Wu Chun mania in Thailand, including a giant painted portrait of him up for sale on the streets, next to paintings of towers and holy monks). The production values are cool, the story funny, and the relationship between Angela and Wu Chun bristles with snappiness and chemistry. It's like the perfect shoujo manga adaptation :P

Also, the OTP reminds me, a very little, of what would happen if Rui and Makino hooked up. My favorite was Angela's thought that 'Barring his rotten character, [Wu Chun's character's name] is a perfect man. Good-looking, rich, and capable.' LOL, girl, you are ready to move to Thailand.

Here is the the perfect MV for this:

I love the intercutting, the song, the filters, everything.

ETA: Ep 3's adorable fluffiness makes bunnies look brutally uncute by comparison. I nearly died LOLing when Angela invites Wu Chun for dinner with her crazy hilarious adoptive family and there is a chopstick fight. LOL. And heeee, he totally is beginning to like her. I know the whole 'rich boy comes up for dinner to poor girl's family and is all envious of family warmth and cookiness' is such a cliche, but it's a cliche for a reason :P

Since I finished the incredibly wonderful Hello My Teacher, I didn’t want to start on another absorbing drama for a few days (I always like a bit of breathing space).

So I started on one I know I will enjoy but one that, hopefully, would not lead to crazy fixation. Would lead to giddy fun though.

Drama of choice? Last year’s popular twdrama, Romantic Princess. I did a long summary/vids/pics/pusher post of it here (I considered watching it earlier), but a very short summary is this: our heroine, played by Angela Zheng, is a very ordinary girl who discovers that she is the long-lost grand-daughter of the richest man in Asia. Grandpa takes her in and she has to get used to the new life, and also deal with Wu Zun, grandpa’s previous heir, who might not be too pleased at the intrusion.

Or then again, he might be:

Think pure sugar-spun modern fairy tale, a fluffy, light, romantic Cinderella for 14 hours or so, with large houses, kisses in the rain, and scary fashions, with a dash of angst thrown in. Even though it has the ‘one poor spunky girl interacts with a bunch of very rich haughty guys’ set-up, this is more Ouran than Hanadan in tone (without Ouran’s delicious quirkiness, though). I am about half an episode in, and Angela is quite adorable, sweet without being cloying, and looking like a cross between Taiwanese Aishwarya Rai, Bambi, and a doll. I could break her in two with one hand, she is so tiny, but she is so irresistably cute, one can see how and why reserved, upper-class Wu Zun falls for her so easily. Wu Zun looks and acts, as always, super-appealing and charming. He was made to do dramas like this. By now he could probably do his usual ‘reserved Prince Charming’ character in his sleep, but who cares? I love watching it. This is not the drama to stretch one’s thespian skills anyway, it’s delicious cotton-candy. Pink.

Will watch more tonight.

A few screencaps and a lot of snark )
