Saw the delicious Bolly confection Jhoom Barabar Jhoom today, about two immigrants: a young Indian 'fixer' (played by Abhishek Bachchan, irresistable here) and a well-behaved Pakistani upper-middle class girl (played, sparklingly, by Preity Zinta). While waiting for a very delayed train, their paths cross and they entertain each other by the stories of how they met their fiances, glamorous Alvira (Lara Dutta) and super-rich Steve (played by Bobby Deol. You know, I might like him after this flick). But then...they find they are falling in love. What to do?

It's a movie of mind-blowing musical numbers (seriously eye-popping), a post-modern story (to say more would be to ruin it), full of delicious in-jokes (Abhishek says he knows Madame Toussaud's as they have some of 'ours' there and mentions superstars Amitabh Bachchan, his father, and Aishwarya Rai, his wife. LOL), movie riffs, and fresh chemistry between the leads.

Oh, and 'Bol Na Halke Halke,' the song picturization the link to which I posted here,is worth the price of admission by itself. Telling an independent fantasy 'what if' story (fanciful imagining of meeting under other circumstances by Abhishek), this is a complete 9 minute movie-within-a-movie, a swoony love story complete as a very short film.

Oh, and Abhishek? Charming and hot. Normally I am not about movie dynasties but he is a total exception. I am glad he is in showbiz and he certainly deserves every bit of his star status.

Go watch!

Ok, this is going to be sort of a mishmash of things.

I am reading Mr. Mousie’s awesome present, the Ayashi No Ceres manga. I adore the anime, but I love the manga more. The anime followed the first few volumes faithfully, but it seems to have skipped a lot of the middle volumes (for length reasons. Fushigi Yuugi was 51 episodes for 14 volumes. AnC is 24 eps for the same amount of volumes.) I don’t mind skipping the secondary character stuff, like more on Shuro or other C-Genomes, because I am all about the mains, but I do wish they had some of the awesome Toya/Aya stuff in the anime that they did in the manga. I am especially thinking of the scenes in volumes 6-7, where she comes to visit him in his hotel room before she leaves for Tokyo and they almost make love but then Chidori interrupts and as they are about to head out, Toya hears the assassins sent by the Progenitor (who is incredibly sexually jealous, duh), and he tells the girls to stay inside and goes completely efficiently berserk psycho on the squad, killing a whole bunch of them.

And Aya comes out to see the end of this and is horrified by the fact that Toya (who is basically covered in blood) is so unflinching and unhesitant about all the killing, that it gives him no pause. And she tells him that and slaps him and Chidori drags her away, and then I love the bit where Chidori tells Aya that, in love or not, she should forget about Toya however sexy he might be, because it is wrong that he seems to feel no emotion on all this death, that he has the knife out of his arm thing, as if he is some sort of a UFO subject, and that Yuhi is so much better for her. And then she actively proceeds to try to set the two of them up even though she sorta likes Yuhi herself. You know, the whole thing is very Buffy/Angel/Willow/Xander, you know?

GUUUUH. Toya is SO my manga boyfriend. He is all cold and messed-up and reserved but so all-consumingly in love with Aya, but he isn’t even sure what emotions mean because he can’t remember any. GUUUUH.

In other fictional boyfriend news, I am on ep 4 of Smiling Pasta and OHHHH, He Qun!!!! Seriously. He is awesome. SP is one of those rare doramas which is about nice guys finishing first. Because the heroine initially likes He Qun’s younger badboy brother, but she is really beginning to develop a thing for He Qun because he is just plain good. And the same is true for him. His ex, Rita, is a total bitch.

I just love how well-adjusted and grown-up he is. Unlike his silly younger brother who seems to be all about meaningless competitions with He Qun as if to prove his superiority, but he can’t compete with someone who doesn’t see the competition as there. Because he isn’t on Ah Zhe’s level, because he is that dorama rarity, an emotionally matured hero. Heh. I love the bit where Ah Zhe tries to do everything to drag He Qun into a race with him and He Qun is so uninterested. But he finally joins because he finds out XS would be bullied if he doesn’t. And he is running neck and neck with his brother but then he sees XS has fallen, and he knows she should not finish last or she would be mocked for another year and forced to wear a turtle costume, so he turns back and gives up the race and helps her get up and basically helps her across the finish line. And she is all ‘but why? You are going to be the slowest and have to wear the outfit’ and he just grins that then they can be turtle fiancés and ‘it’s cute.’

But the thing I love the most about it, is the fact that he isn’t doing it because he’s in love with her. (Just as he didn’t fish her shoe out for her because he was in love with her, or leave the movie screening because he thought his earlier behavior was thoughtless because he is in love with her). He likes her, true. And he is amused by her, and he loves her wacky affectionate family, so different from his own. He might even be slowly falling for her. (I love the bit where she is all ‘why did you do this and that for me’ and he comes up with random answers and then she momentarily stumps him and he comes up with something outrageous and then laughs). But he does all these things not for mad pash or anything, but because he is, ultimately, a very nice guy.

The same is true with his family issues. They aren’t OTT angst or anything. He doesn’t have a good relationship with his father, but it’s one of those ‘I want my son to have a better image’ things, and his younger brother is having a years-long tantrum, but it’s not some really weird thing.

Basically? He Qun for the win.

In final, and unrelated comment, I was watching the KwK interview with Preity and Saif yesterday, on my Saif kick, and they spent a decent chunk of it denying any affair between them, but hey, I have no idea if they did or not, but ironically, I could totally buy that they did, after that interview. It’s the chemistry. It’s not the long-term friends chemistry Kajol and SRK had on KwK (in movies it’s entirely something else, but not in interviews). It was all teasing flirtatious sexy thing. Hmmmmm.

For oh, Karan Johar and the lovely ladies at SRK.org are kind to us.

More swoonable goodness here )

If nothing else (and it seems as if there will be plenty else), this movie will be gorgeous to look at.

The poll has spoken and since Jensen Ackles is the winner, expect Jensen spam some time this week. I must admit that I will be doing a picspam of all these gentlemen because hey, someone voted for them (except for poor Tom Welling. I guess WB angst and deer eyes only get you so far) and because they are hot. Escpecially Olivier Martinez, because I've never done a picspam of him and he was to die for in Horseman on the Roof (one of the coolest love stories I've seen, and there wasn't even any kissing).

I went to see Fanaa for a third time last night. Siiiiigh. So good. The theater was full, even on a Sunday night. Still wonderful. There really is nothing like watching Bollywood on big screen. And I cried (again) and that moment of Kajol letting go and spinning during 'Des Rangila' still makes me giddy with joy, and I have a new favorite moment: when Kajol and Aamir are bathing Rehan Jr and Kajol goes 'Rehan, look up' (to her son) and Aamir looks up. Guuuuuh. It just gets to me. And his in her lap at the end is seriously sob sob sob territory. To complete the wonderfulness, after the movie I asked the theater person if I could buy one of the movie posters (being a polite girl) and he was so nice. He told me I didn't need to buy and asked me which movie and gave me a huge, gorgeous poster with Kajol and Aamir's faces on top and that bit with him in her lap in the snow (from the part of MHM that wasn't in the movie) and I love it. Thank you, lovely person! There were Krrish posters everywhere and the movie looks soooo deliciously tacky. Oh Hrithik. Why can't you make ONE good movie where I can enjoy the flick AND you at the same time, and keep my self-respect?

And thinking of Fanaa, I decided to rewatch the 'Suraj Hua Maddam' number from Kabhi Khushi Kabie Gham to see if 'Mere Haath Mein' from Fanaa replaced it as a favorite. It was a close thing, but no. Nothing is as surreally beautiful as SHM. Still, like that other contender, 'Roshni Se' from Asoka, MSM came close but didn't win. So here is the youtube video of this song. Do check it out! The first minute or so is actually not the song but the moments in the movie that lead to it. Basically, the really short synopsis is that he is the eldest son of a really rich, proper, proud family. She is a madcap girl who is from a very poor area. Completely ineligible, in short. Not to mention his family is about to finalize his engagement with an entirely suitable girl. But they are OTP and he defies his family and marries her even when he gets disowned. And that's only the first half of the movie! But anyhow, this is right when they discover they are in love with each other. Pyramids, colors, and passion

Also, being tired in the morning, and needing a shot of wangst to get me up and moving, I rewatched the ending og Meteor Garden, the part where they both go on a hunger strike, and the evil mother lets them talk but only through a door so they can't see each other and he tells her he misses her and there are tears. Heeeee. It's the perfect thing I needed: being angsty, resulting in a HEA, and also full of cheese. Actually, since HYD anime had a similar storybit (evil Mom locks up and restrains Our Hero so as to force him into marriage), I am wondering if it was in the manga (please say it was!) Though I can't see how it would have gotten resolved there, because manga went on for volumes and volumes after that so it's not as if Mommy Dearest gave up. Also, I am amused by the fact that he's been on a hunger strike for days but the girl is doing it for less than a day, but she is almost as ill as he is. He doesn't look like he has fat deposits though :P

I am also reading Autumn Bridge, by Takashi Matsuoka, which isn't bad, is set in 19th century Japan, but is unfortunately a sequel to a previous book, with same characters and all, a fact which would have been useful to have on the cover. And being lured by the evil of Netflix, I've netflixed Felicity, Alias, Dawson's Creek and second season of cracktasticness that is One Tree Hill. And has anyone watched The Lake House with keanu and Sandra Bullock? Is it worth $10 and two hours of my time?

And last, but not least, a gazillion Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna came out over the weekend. It looks TO DIE FOR and I can't wait for the movie. I am sure most of you have already seen the stills, but nevertheless, here they are.

And now I melt into a puddle of goo:

The rest of gorgeous angsty goodness )

This is an eye candy post. Pure and simple.

There is a new SRK pic from KANK which is quite appropriate considering it's World Cup. Also, it's insanely hot. And I also have capture stills from the KANK promo and larger versions of the SRK-related promo caps courtesy of srk.org. I still can't believe BW is making a movie about falling in love with other people. After marriage.

And I stole from [livejournal.com profile] thelana a gorgeous Kajol pic (because Kajol!!!) and the poster for the Indian reimagining of Othello (Omkara) which sounds fantastic.

Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna. Yummy Angst )

Omkara. Shakepearean Angst )

Kajol. No angst )

Today's movie rec and pic spam of the day is Kal Ho Na Ho. It's a fun, funny, tongue-in-cheek movie that turns melodramatically heart-breaking and which I adore. It's not a masterpiece but a movie I can rewatch ad nauseam. And it's set in New York City.

The story revolves around Naina (Preity Zinta), a twenty-something New Yorker, whose life is rather bleak: her father is dead, her mother and her grand-mother fight continuously, she is afraid of loving and losing, and the restaurant run by her mother is about to fold. The only bright spot in her life comes from her best friend, Rohit (Saif Ali Khan), but her life changes dramtically when a new neightbor, Aman (Shahrukh Khan) moves in and turns Naina's quiet neighborhood and Naina's world itself upside down.

The music is great, the characters are too, the story is witty and funny and angsty. And Saif and Shahrukh have a great chemistry. I love it.
