I have come to the conclusion that Too Late To Say I Love You is pretty much created by my id. I squealed like an idiot when I watched how Warlord and Heroine met. This is pretty much the coolest first meeting for an OTP in any drama I can think of.

Repeatedly saving each other's lives, quipping, kissing, and keepsakes. All while looking stylish. Rather cooler than match.com )

I have a new obsession, a 2010 period cdrama Too Late To Say I Love You (Lai Bu Ji Shuo Wo Ai Ni/来不及说我爱你).

Too Late is set in the turbulent early decades of the 20th-century, so perhaps it is quite appropriate that the heroine's romantic choice revolves between a warlord-in-training and an arms dealer. (A warlord-in-training or an arms dealer - who's the girl to choose?) There are guns, fights, amazing clothes, undying love, and one of the most intense and dysfunctional relationships it has been my privilege to obsess about.

Our heroine, Jing Wan (Li Xiao Ran), has a pretty straightforward mission - to convince the new warlord, Murong Feng (Wallace Chung) to release her arranged fiance, who has gotten nabbed as a result of a botched arms deal. Only guess who falls in love? Perhaps Jing Wen shouldn't have saved a handsome stranger's life on that train...

Much angst abounds, at one point the heroine runs away from her wedding to be with warlord, and the whole thing is delicious...

I am pretty sure this won't end well. Period cdramas with happy endings are freakishly rare and seeing that the heroine's true love is a warlord-to-be, I am sure this is going to go well. Especially since, apparently, her fiance gets so pissed at being jilted that he allies with the Japanese, in a move straight out of psychotic secondary guy playbook (sure, that will totally make her love you again, genius!)

I am currently reveling in the yummy yummy dysfunction. Rarely have I seen a drama hero as obsessed/single-minded/devoted to the heroine as in this. Heroine is at the stage of "I don't love you!" Though perhaps her protestations would be more convincing if they weren't interspersed with cuddling sessions with the Warlord Jr. on (formerly his, currently her*) bed and discussions of military strategy.

Also, there was this awesome exchange:

Warlord: I am going to make every woman's dream come true for you!
Me: Is he going to offer her marriage? babies? undying devotion?
Warlord: I am going to make the world kneel at your feet!
Me: ... OK, then.

* Apparently she got sick and he offered her his room and moved out. Because apparently even a turn-of-the-century warlord is more considerate of the woman he loves than the supposed romantic ideal of Sealed with a Rapey Kiss.

First ten eps are subbed (9 on youtube and 10 on viki). The total ep count is 36 and I am obsessed enough to watch raws...

Have this gorgeous MV:

Blame [livejournal.com profile] hamster428. Her post on Qin's Moon, a Chinese wuxia 3-D animation set during the Qin Dynasty, led me to seek it out and now I am OBSESSED!

It's basically everything I love in a period/fantasy/wuxia cdrama only even prettier! There are supposed to be seven seasons - three are out with subs, fourth is currently airing. Epic battles, tangled loyalties, OTPs that wield swords!

I will eat...something, if this MV doesn't sell you on this:

Actually, I am pre-obsessed with one particular couple:

I mean, they kill things together and make music together! You know it's soulmate territory!

A couple of shippy MVs )

OK, say you. You might be interested but what on earth is this animation about? Glad you asked. Plot synopsis from ancientchinese.net: Qin's Moon tells the story of the rise and fall of the Qin Dnasty, the first Dynasty of China. During this time, six kingdoms were conquered by Qin in a ruthless takeover, with the new emperor forcing his subjects to follow his will and laws. The story follows a young boy, Tianming, who is hunted down by the Qin empire for reasons beyond his knowledge; and together with his friends, allies and teachers, will change the course of history.

As the story progresses fantasy, steampunk and history intertwine to tell this truly unique tale of courage during uncertain times. Tianming faces treacherous enemies, hope and loss, difficult relationships with both family and friends, and the challenges of deailing with a changing world. Eventually, a new era will be created out of their struggles for a better world.

(You can find torrents for the subbed first three seasons on ancientchinese.net or watch subbed eps here). There is also this great QM website and a QM tumblr.

Can I ship Sannyang/Li Gexiao any harder? I mean, they were already damaged, deadly, honorable, with messed-up pasts, hot. So I thought nothing could make me ship them harder. Ep 12 proves that what seems impossible is not.

I was making incoherent noises at the screen at this sequence. )

Though they need to work on Gexiao's major suicidal tendencies. Seriously, dude! Volunteering to drink poison as an experiment = not a road to long life!

So, do you find yourself thinking that seeing Four in Jade Palace and upcoming BBJX is not enough for you?

Yeah, me neither.

But in case you do crave more of said Qing Emperor, Hou Chuan Zhen Huan is about to come to your rescue. It centers around Zhen Huan, one of Yongzheng's concubines, who later became an empress and the mother of the next emperor. Have a trailer:

To be honest, while pretty, this isn't on my radar because it seems to be all about concubine in-fighting (shockingly, this is not made by Yu Zheng!), which is a topic I find utterly boring (though apparently poor Yongzheng isn't the focus of the heroine's affections in this one either. Poor man can't get a fictional break). If I check it out, it will be solely for its leads. I've loved Sun Li (who portrays Zhen Huan) in what I've seen of Shanghai Bund, and Yongzheng is played by Chen Jian Bin, who may be old enough to be my father, but won me over forever with his tour-de-force performance as Cao Cao in Three Kingdoms 2010.

And speaking of Yu Zheng, I am sure you are aware he's released a 20-min trailer for his thematic (because different time period and characters) sequel to Schemes of Beauty, Mei Ren Tian Xia. To be honest, I am not entirely clear on the plot. In my head it goes something like "blah blah blah intrigue, Ming Dao as twins, Mickey He hotness, gorgeous women, etc". It looks amazing though and YZ's dramas are always my thing, so am very much looking forward to this, even if that haircut does Ming Dao no favors.

How much do I love Qing Chuan's confrontation with Eight's Mother. I don't particularly blame the mother because she's under the impression QC is playing Eight and Four and is a super-schemer (but this being the palace, can't come out and say it openly and thus tries to appeal to who she thinks QC is - evil schemer). But I love love LOVE Qing Chuan's response. She's probably one of the most logical heroines out there. It took her forever to decide she liked Eight (and she analyzed it to death and thought it through from every angle, though ultimately emotions like jealousy and missing him were what pushed her over the edge into realizing she loved him) but now that she did, not only is she going to stick by him whatever comes, she is rational and can back up her emotional attachment with some awesome arguments which show why it's good. It's not just her heart but her mind that thinks this relationship is the best. Rationalizing everything has its advantages :) She's never done a grand declaration because it's not her style, but at this point, does she really need it?

Another thing I like? Jealous Qing Chuan. So enjoyable.

But the thing I like the most is Eight telling his mother off, because I always wanted kdrama heroes to do that with their psycho parents and they never did. Just once, when crazy parent was trying to break up them and their OTP and claiming it's for their own good, I wanted someone to point out to their manipulative evil folks that this isn't how you start showing your caring. When Eight told her "Mother. I was afraid of thunder when I was a child. When I needed your comfort, where were you? When I fell from a horse, and needed your care, still, where were you? All those years, you were never there for me. What right do you have to decide what's best for me?"

Preach it, Eight!

And I conclude on this because it was so hilarious and cute. He's mad she didn't show up last night when they were supposed to elope and ignores her and she's cranky he's not paying attention to her, so she bites him. LOLOLOLOL. I love you guys so much. She tells him she meant to come but got locked up with Four, which is why she couldn't meet him to run away with him and she only got away from Four by biting him. And came to him right away without any rest. And then he asks her if she bites every man she sees. ROFL. ILY.

You guys are so perfect.

Has anyone seen this? I am dying to watch this (I love big cdrama epic series) but there are no subs and I don't think anyone has picked it up for subbing (which makes sense - it's a monster drama. I am still (very gratefully) shocked that e.g. Jiang Hu is subbing 95-ep Three Kingdoms). Maybe the DVDs will have subs? I am seriously dying for this.

Have a clip for a character from it:
