I am in love. Madly, passionately, crazily. The object of this affection? Perhaps Love, a 2005 Chinese movie musical starring Takeshi Kaneshiro (does this man just get hotter with each movie I see him in, or what? And he can sing as well? Seriously, he must run over small children or something to counterbalance the wonderfulness), as well as Xun Zhou and Jackie Cheung. [livejournal.com profile] koalathebear, I am definitely in your debt, as I wouldn't have heard of the movie if it wasn't for your lj entry a few months back (though I know you didn't like it as much as I do).

This is an amazing movie: reminding me of older French movies like "A Man and a Woman," or "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg," a musical fantasmagoria that makes Moulin Rouge unsubtle and shrill, and well, itself. The story jumps between three different timelines, points of view of multiple characters, and a whole lot of emotional baggage, but incredibly, it works. I found it like poetry in motion, and visually stunning, and (which is an odd thing for a movie that deals with finiteness of love) one of the most romantic movies I've ever seen.

The plot: A director, Nie Wen (Cheung) is filming a musical (all the musical numbers in the movie are in a context of this). His star, and arguably his muse (and his lover) is Sun Na (Xun Zhou), a beautiful and very ambitious actress. His leading man is Lin Jian-Dong (Takeshi Kaneshiro), a famous HK actor, who takes on the role because 10 years ago, when they were both unknown and penniless, he and Sun Na had a destructive, passionate affair that ended badly and he's never been able to let go of it. The plot of the musical, in fantastic ways, parallels the real story as is happening, as the plot of the movie involves a circus girl who forgets her partner (amnesia, spell, I am not sure?) and takes up with a circus director instead, who manufactured beautiful memories for her.

Nonspoilery thoughts and reasons why this is so good )

I've bought The Promise and Perhaps Love on ebay, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] koalathebear inspired posts/pic spam on those movies. Can't wait to get them. See her post on The Promise and Perhaps Love. Also, inspired by her and [livejournal.com profile] winterspel will watch the jdoramas Long Vacation and Good Luck next week.

On eye-candy front, the topic is anime couples. I've certainly dedicated posts to anime OTPs. See Miaka/Tamahome picspam here and here, or a Kenshin/Kaoru one here. I didn't have much Doumyouji/Tsukushi picspam but I certainly wrote about them ad nauseam. But how about my other anime ships? That is, couples I ship but who are either secondary couples in the anime with my main OTP or are a ship in anime which doesn't have much emphasis on romance. Anyway, here is a little list with a few pics.

Vash/Meryl from Trigun. If this anime has a main canon ship I'd imagine it's this one, but since Trigun is not primarily or even secondarily a romance there isn't much stuff out there (relatively) about this OTP (nor did I write about them ad nauseam). But I love them, and not just because he saves her life repeatedly and she helps him find a reason to live after his break-down. They genuinely care for each other, and take care of each other, and laid back guy/bossy woman is a perfect combo, anyway.

Vash and Meryl )

Rui/Shizuka from Hana Yori Dango. Sure, for me, HYD is all about Doumyoji/Tsukushi's messed-up relationship, but I have a huge soft spot for Rui and Shizuka. He is withdrawn and cold and a bit too passive and she is ruthless and passionless in her perfectionism but somehow they really work for each other. She is is his first and only love and she discovers that she loves and wants him and no one else. The image of their final reunion is one of my favorite scenes in anything, ever.

Rui and Shizuka )

Sanosuke/Megumi from Rurouni Kenshin. I wrote about why I like them earlier and am too lazy to repeat, but honestly it's because they just click...

Sanosuke and Megumi )

Hotohori/Houki from Fushigi Yuugi. Talk about obscure. In part because hey, it's as close to Nuriko/Hotohori as you could get with someone as clearly straight as Hotohori. But largely it's because I wanted Hotohori to find happiness and he seemed to have found it at last with Houki. I didn't watch any of the 3rd OVA, except for the scene at the end where he is reunited with Houki and his son. It made no sense, within the logical parameters of that world that he would be able to do that, but I didn't care. And they looked happy and yay.

Hotohori and Houki )

Doumyouji/Tsukushi from Hana Yori Dango. All right, I lied. There is NO way D/T are not a main OTP or one I didn't write about before. But I just like the pics.

Doumyouji and Tsukushi )

ETA: Not a ship pic, but I just love this shot of Hotohori and his son from one of the OVAs. Talk about piling on the angst. He can't even freaking touch him. I won't watch OVA because they screw up the basic world rules set in the series (and because the story ended and didn't need any sequels), but I just might end up ffing and watch all the Hotohori parts anyway if I see more pics like this.
