Staying up late late late late, finished Peacemaker Kurogane. I just couldn't go to bed and near the end, I'd curse every time the closing credits came up because it meant the interruption of the story, even if only for a minute, and you should have seen me whimpering at the TV and repeating 'don't kill Souji, don't kill Souji' or gasping or making other inarticulate sounds.

[livejournal.com profile] crumpeteer, I am completely in your debt, because I only got this because you recced, and with the exception of Trigun (and possibly FY), this is now my favorite anime. And it’s certainly the most beautiful one I’ve ever seen. It’s gorgeous. I need some PK icons.

Hmmmm, Oscars last night. I confess we only watched the monologue and a bit after. Shortly after the nice guys won for Wallace and Gromit, we switched to Peacemaker instead, only switching back in time for BP announcement.

Crash, hmmmm? I thought the movie was a contrived, preachy, simplistic piece of Oscarbation, but then Brokeback Mountain, the odds-on favorite was rather dull. I liked the first half better than the second but it dragged on and on and ooooon, making me wish for a ff button in the theater. It was sort of like Bridges of Madison Country only with two men, and (to be fair) Heath Ledger being a deal hotter than Clint Eastwood. My favorite of the nominees, Good Night and Good Luck. has a snowball’s chance in hell anyway, and none of my Top 10 movies were even nominated so…yeah, there is a reason why we were watching Peacemaker instead.

And speaking of Peacemaker, I’ve fallen in love. I’ve liked most of the anime I’ve watched (Last Exile and Marmalade Boy being the only exceptions. LE left me cold and I loathed MB), but as to loving it, that’s a much rarer matter. But Peacemaker Kurogane is LOVE. And not just because it gave me my only slash ship so far besides Clark/Lex (well, there is also Ralph/Laurie in Renault’s The Charioteer, but that’s canon, so it’s not slash, right?)

I love the animation which is beautiful and fluid and somehow 3D-ish. I love the continuing storylines. I love the gorgeous fights and the funny, funny humor. But most of all, I love the characters. PK is chock-full of these amazing, complicated, cool characters (yes, I even like Tetsu now, though he is still least interesting of the bunch). And I love that not all backgrounds/histories are explained, though there are dribbles as things come up in conversation. It feels natural, as if you’ve been given a peek into a continuing life of a number of people, and it will go on after you’ve stopped watching, just as it went on before.

Lengthy PK thoughts. And on a new slash ship for moi )

BSG ep was excellent tonight. In fact, it was so excellent I need to do a long, looong write-up, which will take me a day or two.

Also, Husband and I watched more of Peacemaker Kurogane and it continues to be super-excellent. Tetsu doesn't bug me any more, as he shows a good heart and stops trying to show off so much. The Shinsengumi treat him as a mascot and I do understand why they are so nice to him: living the way they do they prize innocence and are rather mystified by it. Also, Toshi/Souji are SO an OTP (and thus I get my second slash OTP. Heeeee). I love that part of the reason Toshi is so reluctant to get Tetsu involved is because he sees Souji in him, and he gave Souji a sword when Souji was 9. And he feels guilty about it. And Souji knows it (that whole conversation was painful, and brilliant, and intimate). Heck, the way they interacted in that scene where Souji is trying to convince Toshi to give Tetsu a sword, reminds me of the way I try to tease my husband when he thinks an idea of mine is ill-advised and I am trying to get him to change his mind. Definitely an OTP. Husband says they remind him of Aragorn and Legolas because we have the dark haired, serious, leaderly one who hangs out with a feminine looking guy with deadly combat skills.

But in other, unconnected, but to me really interesting news, Today is my LJ anniversary!!!!! Last year, on this day, I just got my lj at the urging of [livejournal.com profile] katranna. I haven't looked back (or stopped posting, which is perhaps less fortunate) since. I get all mushy when I think that same time last year I knew two people on my friends list in person, and a couple more through Bollywhat, and now I have all these people I got to internet-know over the year and waaaaaaah. *carries out her threat and does get mushy*

So, mini lj-meme on occasion, as to why various LJ things on this LJ are the way they are. Why things are the way they are )

So in conclusion, I am very very happy to have "met" all of you as you've made the past year a great deal of fun, taught me a whole bunch of fascinating stuff, and gave me a number of extra obsessions I could ill afford. I love you. (Though Husband tells me to remind everyone that this love is purely platonic, heee). Thank you for a year of fun.

This article, lamenting the lack of manly men in modern movies, is rather fun.

Watched 3 eps of Peacemaker Kurogane, a 24 ep anime, and Husband and I both like it a lot. Need PK icons now. I find all the characters (except one) really cool and fascinating, and the Shinsengumi themselves (as an organization) the most interesting at all.

Plot: Tetsu, a 15 year old in 19th century Japan, in order to avenge his parents, manages to inveigle his way into joining the Shinsengumi, a famous and deadly samurai group on the side of the Shoganate during the conflict surrounding the Meiji Restoration. Who are the Shinsengumi in more detail? Here is a wikipedia article on them.

I adore Souji, one of the Shinsengumi captains who is delicate (almost girlish) but blithely homicidal in combat and seems to have no illusions and no problems with what he does. My favorite so far is Hijikata Toshizou, the Vice-Captain who is contained, deadly, and non-nonsense. Also gorgeous (and amusingly, he is the basis for the character of Aoshi in Rurouni Kenshin, who is my biggest crush in that show as well. I am nothing if not consistent). The rest are really interesting too. And gorgeous. And I love the animation style.

Who is the one character who I want throttled? The main character, Tetsu.
