Pretty!

OK, am I going insane or is the Creepy Politician the nasty wife abuser (who built a soundproof room where he can beat her in peace) is also doing something to his kid?????????????????????????????????

I didn't think anything of that sort (even if the kid is kinda robotic in a freaky way - I think it's enough for him to be that way due to household - mother disappearing at random times etc) but then Creepy Politician was in his divorce firm and the kid was taking too long to wash his hands so he just clapped for him like a dog and - ok, wroooooong. And then he was so solicitous to the kid in front of Young Woo, his attorney, but it was the same creepy solicitude he showed to his wife in front of Eun Ho, when he was trying to bamboozle her into believing he was a nice husband. But I think what really got my gears turning was the look on Young Woo's face - you can tell he's pretty freaked out and it's like a lightbulb went on with him, and he's not really the fluffy-huggy type to feel bothered because father is a little short with his kid so...

Hmmmmm. Creepy. I have no idea if I am seeing things (side note - I find it interesting that Young Woo always looks like he wants to hurl whenever he sees his clients. Well, if they weren't such disgusting human beings who your father takes on for influences, maybe you wouldn't need to hit the sauce so much, huh, YW?)

By now I adore Tae Jo to bits, to absolute bits and the chemistry between him and Eun Ho is totally insane. Hmmm, he seems a lot less normal than I initially thought (though less screwed-up than his brother) so maybe that has something to do with it :)

Oh, and I continue to LOVE love Jung Won. That scene where she was waiting for Young Woo in 'their' hotel room but he had to spend the night with his wife instead and she saw - eeeeeeeeeeeeek. Something tells me she is going to leave him, and I can't blame her. Go for it, girl! Because YW is never leaving his creepy life, ever. And I did finally figure out why YW couldn't marry her - yes, with her father the convicted felon, no way would YW's father sanction the marriage.

ETA: Ok, whaaaat? Apparently the Mom hit the kid? Ugh, that whole family just needs to die.

Am through ep 6 of Partner and I really really adore the drama. The thing I adore the most? The absolutely fucked up thing going on between Jung Won and Young Woo (i.e. the secondary OTP).

By now, I really like our hero, Tae Jo (I sense the beginning of a crush, actually), and I have liked the heroine, Eun Ho, from the moment I met her. And I like their chemistry and their friendly relationship and their overall adorableness.

But the thing is, they are much too normal and well-adjusted so how can they compete with total dysfunction that is the secondary OTP? I keep dying for the whole drama to be about them. Their combo of toughness/weariness/wrongness and genuine inability to break off however much both of them realize this isn't doing good for either one of them (she is much better off not being in a dead-end relationship with a married man who has no intention of leaving his wife and has never lied to her about it, and he is much better off not engaging in an affair which can jeopardize his society, strategic marriage and screw up his future for good) is my kryptonite. I think I love it especially because both of them are very much my fictional character types - Jung Won is scary-smart and competent and gorgeous and is wryly amused at herself for being an idiot on the relationship front. And Young Woo is so controlled and even frozen over he has almost smothered any humanity in himself, but he hadn't managed to do it quite and so you can see him dying inside over all the things he is doing (he is about one step from a nervous breakdown) but he has no intention to stop. And Jung Won is the one chink in his armor - the one human emotion he cannot bear to give up. They are so beyond fucked up. I SHIP THEM LIKE MAD.

And this scene, OMG! When she got drunk and called him and he came to pick her up. And she was a lot freer because of the alcohol and hugged him and then went "oh, sorry, I forgot, you hate the smell of alcohol" and he just clutched her and told her "I don't mind it, if it's your smell." MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM. Oh, my hopeless, never-gonna-end-well OTP!

More caps from that scene )

Actually, I keep wondering why he broke up with her and married his society wife. I mean, it's not as if she is a chicken-seller from the gutter. She is a highly educated, eminently presentable, very successful attorney. Though I suppose even that wasn't society enough. (Man, his and hero's father is CREEPY EVIL - anyone who has his older son so completely controlled and cowed as if he was a puppet when the man is 40 and the younger son so pissed off at the whole family he basically bailed and never talks to them, is doing something wrong on the parenting front).

Partner continues to be highly enjoyable, even if it's not rocking my socks off.

I am not particularly interested in any of their cases, but that is fine. I am warming up a bit to Tae Jo (hero) and I like our heroine Eun Ho, but I confess for me the drama is basically made by Honey Lee and Choi Chul Ho's dysfunctional, hot, and adulterous relationship. Any scenes involving them all of a sudden ping my interest to eleven. I find myself wishing the drama was about them instead (sort of like another Que Sera Sera). Oh well...It's almost like they are in their own story, a French movie of sorts. One I'd desperately love to watch, with the sex and the ennui and the dysfunction and the hidden desperation.

My favorite scene so far: with HL, CCH, CCH's wife, and Hero (i.e. CCH's brother who aspires to date HL). That was my favorite scene in the drama so far. Feast on the dysfunction.

Glad to see Tae Jo actually doing something decent and protecting Eun Ho from crazy victim's relative who is trying to hit her. Maybe he actually has a soul under there somewhere. Still not particularly interested in him though.

1. In 'kpop fans are crazy' news of the day, omona posted something on Se7en (what kind of name is it anyway, seriously?) and the write-up mentioned that once he admitted he is dating Han Byul, membership of his fanclub dropped by 100k asap. People are insane. I have no opinion of Se7en's talent (have never heard him, seen him, and would not recognize his picture if presented with it. All I know is he is a kpop idol with a freaky name) but seriously - do kpop fans expect their objects of idolatry to remain virgins forever or hit on their underaged jaibait selves instead of having normal relationships? Craaaazy. Btw, that is why I like Han Byul (you may have seen her as secondary girl in Oh My Lady) - I don't think she is much of an actress but anyone who can put up with dating an idol for 8 years, most of them in secret and the rest with insane and angry fangirl stalker hordes, has my metaphorical hat off to her, especially since they are still together.

2. I found myself with some time and watched ep 3 of Gumiho Girlfriend. Hmmm. I still find myself fast-forwarding (what is the point of the Aunt and Chow Yun Fat lookalike, again?) and I still do not care for anyone but at least I had a moment of strong emotion. A pity that emotion was the desire to stab Dae Woong in the face after he dumped Gumiho on the river. WTF who does that? Ugh.

3. Being on a mini-Wallace Huo binge, I decided to check out A Mobile Love Story. But being canny and knowing how cdramas tend to devolve into "everyone dies! painfully!" no matter the fluffy premise, I decided to be smart and check out the last ep first. Good move on my part - he married his old ex who was dying and she died during the wedding in his arms. And he didn't get his OTP either. And now I saved myself 20 eps of watching with such and ending in store. On the plus side, Wallace is pretty. Yay.

4. Even though I haven't progressed much into Baker King since last post, being distracted, I continue to love it. Though I am beginning to suspect Ma Jun is hounding Tak Gu because he bears a 'love that dare not speak its name' towards him. Seriously.

Proof in caps )

But who could blame him? Tak Gu breaks so beautifully!

More samples here )

We also just met Eugene and I think I may be shipping her with Ma Jun.

Scene of their meeting )

4. Also, mmmm, secondary OTP of Partner. I know he is an adulterer with generally iffy morals and she is totally OK she is sleeping with a married man but I SHIP THEM SO HARD IT'S INSANE.

To my everlasting surprise I have just finished ep 1 of Partner and I really really like it. It's fast-paced, funny, and I have no idea where the plot points are going.

I am also in love with the heroine, who is strong, smart, and warm. And just a little prim. Seriously - instant girlcrush.

I am NOT in love with the hero, who I find amusing (he is a walking disaster zone, though undoubtedly smart), but who I want to smack until his head starts spinning - as it stands, he is basically a waste of a human being - shape up and do something with yourself, boy! It would also be nice if anything in this world mattered to you at all.

But the dynamic between and heroine (he couldn't care less about new lawyer but is stuck working with her and is in permanent eccentric headspace and she thinks he's a weird kind of lunatic and is a bit exasperated but also taking it in stride) is pretty fun to watch, so I don't care if I ever like him.

Even though I am already watching a billion dramas (Gloria, Giant, I Am Legend, Baker King, Summer Desire, LOCH2008 rewatch, Love at First Fight, Bad Love, Young Warriors of the Yang Clan, Soulmate, Gumiho Girlfriend, Men and Legends), one more just got added to the pile.

The drama is last year's kdrama Partner, starring Lee Dong Wook, Kim Hyun Joo, Honey Lee and Choi Chul Ho.

Normally I stay far far away from dramas centered around lawyers but I cannot help it here. I saw this MV and was a total goner in about ten seconds (you may have to turn the volume way up - for some reason it plays quieter on my computer than other vids).

This is the secondary OTP - from what I know through flist osmosis they were lovers but his evil family made him marry someone more suitable. But then she ended up being hired by the same firm he was working in and...things happened. I should probably be screaming 'adulterers!!!' but hey, I was always one for sexy trainwrecks. Instead of going 'how could they', I keep hoping for his wife to accidentally fall into a piranha tank (or, more humanely, divorce him for a non-cheater).

The main OTP looks pretty awesome too (an angsty playboy and a strong-willed single mother) but a lot more functional so I think I am less drawn to them (though, once again from flist osmosis, I remember there is some BIG ANGSTY SECRET (tm) why he can't be with her - something to do with her dead husband). Have a great MV:

So yes, despite normally avoiding lawyer dramas like the plague, I am about to plunge into one. The awesome cast plus two OTPs - bring it on!

And speaking of lawyers, I watched ep 5 of I Am Legend which I really like but which made me really wonder about the Korean legal system. It does not seem indicated anywhere that KJE is asking for alimony and so they are not fighting over how much she should get and there are no kids to argue custody issues about - so why the divorce is even contested in the sense that there is bitter fighting - under Korean law, could she really not get a divorce when she wants it, whatever the reason? That is bizarre. Beyond bizarre.
