Because I don't have much to do today, have a comparison of the only two Nine-Tailed Fox dramas I have ever seen - My Girlfriend is a Gumiho and Forbidden Love (I have never got around to watching Gumiho's Revenge). The below list, highly scientific :P will show us the true fox winner!

So, without much ado, I present a battle for the ages!

VERSUS

In a GUMIHO TEN-POINT BATTLE!

Heroine

Forbidden Love (Nine-Tailed Fox): A tough, kickass lady who is one of the elite fox fighter squadron (that is, foxes who fight, not fox exterminators). Has saved Hero's life and can take him on mano-a-mano any time. In her spare time, she is a curator of a museum and is smart and awesome all-around. Oh, and has power to end the world.
My Girlfriend Is A Nine-Tailed Fox: A mischievous naive fox due to being trapped in a painting for 500 years. Has super-strength, super-speed, and ability to consume insane amounts of food. Has major preoccupations with (a) becoming human (b) mating with her crush, i.e. Hero (c) eating meat.
Winner: I like Girlfriend's heroine but she is a little kid compared to FL's heroine. Forbidden Love.

Hero

Forbidden Love (Nine-Tailed Fox): Super tough cop and star member of an elite human unit of anti-fox fighters. Hates all foxes with a passion. One problem - the woman he loves is one. Even as they battle each other on daily basis, he has no idea of the fact. Like a little kid in love but grown-up in every other way that matters - just as well as he has an adored younger sick sister and has been orphaned by evil foxes. Oh, and is sex on legs.
My Girlfriend Is A Nine-Tailed Fox: Is a total wimpy self-absorbed doofus terrified of his own shadow and is not bright. Acts as if he is 5. Spoiled. Useless. Kind when he can bother to think about it. Looks like a gargoyle. (Sorry, LSG fans!)
Winner: You have got to be kidding me! Forbidden Love.

Secondary Guy

Forbidden Love (Nine-Tailed Fox): Angsty fox leader who works out his unrequited love for heroine through viola playing and a lot of shirtless sword-fighting with his sexy best (male) friend. Oh, make out already, guys!
My Girlfriend Is A Nine-Tailed Fox: Ridiculously hot (though sadly, not shirtless) fox hunter with mysterious motives who is possibly immortal.
Winner: Girlfriend. That guy is too hot for me to even think straight.

Secondary Girl

Forbidden Love (Nine-Tailed Fox): Gorgeous Han Ye Seul playing a tough fox in love with Secondary Guy. Pity she is a mole from rival fox clan out to avenge her parents on his family. Them's the breaks, lady!
My Girlfriend Is A Nine-Tailed Fox: Shallow plastic twit who is neither a threat nor interesting.
Winner: Unless you need psychiatric help, Forbidden Love.

Other Characters

Forbidden Love (Nine-Tailed Fox): Various sexy/angsty/tough foxes and fighters of foxes. Including a shirtless Uhm Tae Woong.
My Girlfriend is a Nine-Tailed Fox: I fast-forward through all their scenes, they are so bland and merge into one another.
Winner: My hormonal fantasies, i.e. Forbidden Love.

Love Story

Forbidden Love (Nine-Tailed Fox): My favorite kind - love with the edge of madness. They cannot live without each other. They can never be together. They are sworn enemies. They are childhood friends. They battle to the death daily. Then go out on dates. MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.
My Girlfriend Is A Nine-Tailed Fox: She: "Buy me some yummy meat. Then let's mate!" He: "wiiiiiimp." No, thank you.
Winner: Any doubt? Come on. Forbidden Love, by a landslide.

Funny Quota

Forbidden Love (Nine-Tailed Fox): Do you find the following things funny: death of parents, torture, trauma, unrequited love, huge death count of all the characters you love best? If not, then I am afraid the quota is zero.
My Girlfriend Is A Nine-Tailed Fox: Pretty funny. As one expects from a Hong Sisters drama.
Winner: Girlfriend. Not even a contest.

Angst Quota

Forbidden Love (Nine-Tailed Fox): Through the roof. "Rocks fall everyone dies" might actually be too cheerful to describe this drama.
My Girlfriend Is A Nine-Tailed Fox: It's a romcom, and I severely doubt any turn of events short of transforming Girlfriend into IRIS or one of Kwon Sang Woo's sobfests, would get it to have any angst to compare with FL. Though, psssst, Hong Gil Dong was also Hong Sisters so you never know.
Winner: Forbidden Love

Silliness/Cheesiness Factor

Forbidden Love (Nine-Tailed Fox): Let me just mention one thing - heroine fights all her battles wearing a transparent face veil and hero still cannot tell this is actually his girlfriend kicking his butt. He must be brain-damaged. Also various people eat raw liver.
My Girlfriend Is A Nine-Tailed Fox: Nothing to compare with that.
Winner: Girlfriend - it may not be too bright a drama but it doesn't have the stupid bits FL does.

Fights

Forbidden Love (Nine-Tailed Fox): Many and varied
My Girlfriend Is A Nine-Tailed Fox: Unless attacking a steak counts, none.
Winner: FL

Overall Winner: With a count of 7 to 3, it's Forbidden Love.

Hmmm, I feel like doing it for a lot of same-topic dramas. That would be fun.

Two eps in, I think I've decided Gumiho Girlfriend is not for me.

It's funny in spots but not enough to keep me watching when there are parts that bore me (anything with Hero's family) and where I don't care for any of the characters, except for being mildly intrigued by the fox hunter, who is a mix of Iljimae and Bidam and is insanely pretty (if the love story in this was between the gumiho and the gumiho-hunter, I may have continued to watch. But then, if I want that, I can watch the much superior Forbidden Love).

Shin Minah is having a blast playing the gumiho but I find her character grating - her lack of knowledge about the world and her bossing and ordering Dae Woong around are supposed to be cute but I loathe high maintenance people and all I can think it what a nightmare it would be to be around her. Cooky-cute-demanding is not my sort of combo. Lee Seung Gi is adorable in general but the problem is his character Dae Woong is such a spineless, incompetent loser, I dislike him on principle. More importantly, neither of them comes across as real or relatable in any way. I can forgive a drama most any sin if it makes me care for a character - if it makes me feel this almost irrational emotional connection. Here, as with You're Beautiful and Fantasy Couple (and unlike with My Girl, Chun Hyang, and Hong Gil Dong, to use only Hong Sisters dramas) this connection is utterly absent.

I wouldn't care if they all got killed by a hurricane in the first minutes of ep 3.

Seeing that I have plenty of other dramas where I do care to watch at the moment, buh bye, Gumiho Girlfriend.

Also, I will make sure to stay away from dramabeans for my own sanity - I still remember how the insane "YAB is the most amazing work ever conceived by the mind of man, every drama that is competing with it/airing after it/is not it shall be bashed, I want to have JGS' babies" fangirls turned me from being 'meh' on YAB to rabid hate.

I think, as time goes on, romcoms become less and less my thing. Period dramas? Bring them on. Revenge stories or family sagas or angsty weepies? Oh yes. Romcoms? Not so much.

Frell.

I think I have just fallen for the vampire* warrior leader.

I am so predictable - all it took was the childhood flashback in ep 3, where he was remembering how he first met Si Yeon. Because he didn't want to learn how to use the sword (or to fight) and so the vampire teachers kept torturing him (I was already annoyed at the hierarchy from the first two eps, and the way they treated kids didn't make me like them any better) and she actually gave him a handkerchief and tried to defend him during training. And that's why he picked up the training sword/stick thingy for the first time - to protect her when the teachers started whaling on her instead. AWWW. I am sold.

Also, the other vamp warrior lady whose name escapes me (but she is played by the gorgeous Han Ye Seul) clearly has hots for him, so he might be better off reciprocating, because Si Yeon and hot fighter of vamps cop are clearly the forbidden OTP of this drama and I love them to bits anyway. OT3?

Ah well, doesn't matter, I bet everyone dies in the end.

This drama is SO my thing!

* I call them vamps even though they are called "foxes" in the story - they are a different kind of beings that look human, can fight extra well, turn into dust if stabbed in a specific place, prey on humans (their livers, specifically), and are engaged in secret war with humans where they want to take over. Basically vampires.

General and unspoilery vid (those are super-hard to find for this drama):

Relationship-heavy and very very spoilery mv:

She is a vampire, a killer for a vampire clan, hating her job but excellent at it. He is a cop, a member of an elite, secret unit dedicated to eliminating vampires.

Did I mention that they were childhood lovers and that they meet again when she is ordered to kill him when he discovers the secret of vampire existence?

Yup, I've started rewatching Nine Tailed Fox (also known as Forbidden Love) and am watching ep 3.

So good!

I posted these credits for the drama before, but I am still addicted to them, so there...

To say that I am addicted to the credits of Nine-Tailed Fox is an understatement. I have obsessively rewatched them a number of times. What's the number? I won't say.

But just look at them:

They are beyond gorgeous. And I am not even talking about the psychotically addicting theme song.

Also, I am totally in love with the drama. I mean! She hides in his apartment prepared to kill him, even if she realized he is her childhood friend, because he could potentially find out her kind's secret existence. And she volunteers! And before walking off she unwraps the bandage her wrapped around her hand earlier...OMG.

Did I mention that the other guy is cellist who gave it up for the sword?

I love.

Trust the Koreans to do a vampire story that hits all my kinks!

Also, what is with Jo Hyun Jae? Did he take a sexy pill just for this drama? Because he was neither sexy nor compelling in 'Only You'* (I gave up on that drama, in fact), and from the pics in 'Three Dads One Mom', he didn't look smoking either, but here I can't take my eyes off him and my thoughts aren't really PG-rated. I don't know if it's the buzzcut, the intensity, the angst, or the clearly doomed love...but whatever it is, it's working!

*Funny: I am adoring JHJ in this and I loved Han Chae-Young in 'Chun Hyang' but put them together in 'Only You' and it's a recipe for curing insomnia.

This morning, craving a kdrama, I finally started watching a drama I meant to watch for a really long time, Nine-Tailed Fox (otherwise known as "Forbidden Love" or "Gumiho"), made in 2004 and starring (OMG, just thinking of this cast makes me delirious): Kim Tae-Hee, Jo Hyun Jae, Jun Jin, Han Ye Seul, and Uhm Tae-Woong.

NTF is not really your typical kdrama: there is no terminal illness, rich-poor dichotomy, or stepsiblings in love. The heroine might be beautiful and angsty, but she kicks an enormous amount of *** (and can in fact take out the hero) and the story itself is a Korean take on a vampire tale, with forbidden love, mysticism, planned world takeovers, tragic pasts and shiny weapons thrown in.

The vampire in question? Our heroine, Shi Yeon (KTH). Only in this world, they are not 'vampires,' they are 'foxes', individuals who look like people but are not, have incredibly fighting skills, battle for supremacy with humans, and sustain themselves on human livers. Shi Yeon is one of the fox clan's enforcers, an incredibly talented fighter who is also loved by the (hunky, angsty, reserved) future leader of the clan. She is also someone who breaks the greatest taboo of all and falls in love with a human. And not just any human. Min-Woo, her OTP, is an officer in a secret organization dedicated to exterminating foxes.

Anyway, I watched the first episode and loved it. The heroine is both fragile and tough, the hero is hot and adorable (his grin!), the "other guy" is smoking-hot (and I swear to God, Uhm Tae Woong and him have a thing going), the plot is interesting, and it's all cheesy but in a very good way.

I posted a summary of it a while back, with character profiles, and am now reposting for your easy access and convenience :)
