I have watched all the parts of ep 1 of Next Stop Happiness that are subbed and most of the unsubbed parts.

I am in love.

I am so in love that if the rest don't get subbed soon, I am watching raw - last time I watched twdrama raws was Silence (!!!!!).

So far, I am in love with Ady An's heroine, ridiculously so. Ady is my favorite Taiwanese actress except for Barbie Hsu (it will take an earthquake to dislodge Barbie from number one spot seeing that my first two dramas ever starred her) and she is so good in this - my heart breaks for her - she is someone who lost her family, her privileged lifestyle, and her dream of piano-playing at the same time, as a child. But she is not weepy or weak - she is strong and sunny (without being Pollyannaish about it). She is just so functional.

I can tell it will be one of those dramas which will, for me, be all about the heroine and seeing through her prism. When Vanness' character was being difficult with her my rage was irrational - I haven't felt such burning hate since beginning of Brilliant Legacy and Hwan. Not because he was being particularly horrible (he was being difficult and acting out and a brat, but it wasn't anything in the same universe as Hwan) but because I saw everything through Ady's eyes.

As to Vanness, he is gorgeous and sexy (but when wasn't he?) and (while I can't say I love his character in the sense of wanting to date him) as a character and a drama hero he makes me weak in the knees - he is so angry at the world, and acting out, and not adjusted at all - I bet what will draw him to Ady is her sanity, and her refusing to be either impressed or irrationally angry at him. And her genuineness - he is clearly looking for a connection with someone, anyone, and not finding it (see his fake-natured ex). That boy needs a keeper. And I am finding it so hot, it's disturbing. I am old enough to know that in real life trying to be someone's connection to functioning is unhealthy and acting-out-badboy-with-a-heart-of-gold is a dangerous fantasy, but in dramaland nothing gets me faster, faster, faster.

It's funny, when I look at my favorite twdramas, they all have an acting-out, messed-up underneath his outgoingness, heroes. Hmmm. And strong-willed heroines.

[livejournal.com profile] kitkat_cat told me that she saw the shades of both Domyouji/Makino and Mars in this and I can totally see what she meant - the acting-out messed up rich boy and a common-sense poor girl who won't buckle down; the horrible family (including a creep of a stepfather) for the heroine, the hero that seems fine and 'fun' but is anything but, and is looking for limits.

I can't say whether it will be anywhere near as good as Hanadan/Meteor Garden/Mars, because that is a ridiculously high bar to set, but it looks very promising.

Oh, and for those on my flist who are reluctant to check it out because they think it's a terminal illness drama or a miserable end drama, it's not. At least, I would be shocked to find out it is - the whole premise of it is Vanness forgetting Ady (and not knowing about his son) and them meeting years later after she left him and broke his heart for his own good. Much more The Kid from Heaven or My Lucky Star vibe - and neither one of them ended badly. Plus, with a title like that, I think it will end up well. Otherwise, they'd just call it 'Next Stop Graveyeard'. :P

Am on episode 2 of My Girl in my rewatch and Oh My GUH - Jeong Woo!!!!

He is, without doubt, my favorite 'other guy' ever - I adore him ridiculously much. It says volumes about how well the drama is done that despite the fact that I adore him so (more than a lot of drama leads), I still ship Yu Rin with Gong Chan instead. And not just because after the life Yu Rin has lead, she needs someone like Gong Chan - someone rock steady - after her father, the charming and untrustworthy gambler, Jeong Woo is not for her - there is no 'security' in him - he is an adventurer without a doubt and there is nothing she'd like to do as much as to give up that sort of lifestyle. Gong Chan is such a good guy btw - a rare kdrama hero who is really awesome - he is very kind to her even when she is nobody to him.

This said, I did adore them together and hope Jeong Woo gets an awesome gal of his own. Here is a shippy MV:

I have to say, if you ever wanted Jeong Woo and Yu Rin to hook up, watch the Taiwanese drama My Lucky Star - the story is basically what would have happened if Jeong Woo and Yu Rin were the OTP.

Twdramas were my first drama loves (Mars and Meteor Garden were my first and second drama, respectively) and you never forget your first love, do you?

That is why, much as I might love the slickness of kdrama and the understatedness of jdrama, few things will get me as giddy or emo as a well-done twdrama.

So, after I’ve done my Top Dozen Jdramas and my Top 25 Kdramas, the next logical step is the Top 10 Twdramas/Cdramas, isn’t it? So I did one over a year ago, but have found that I need to majorly revise it.

So here is my updated Top 10 twdrama/cdrama list. Once again, same thing applies: only finished ones (or nearly), as unspoilery as I can make it, blahblahblah.

List, with summaries, reasons, pics, and vids )

In conclusion, yes, Vic Zhou is still my favorite drama actor, all these dramas later.

From my favorite scene in My Lucky Star:

Finished! And it was totally delicious throughout! Not only did it give me such fiction fun as the guy letting himself be beaten into a pulp in order for his girl not to get hurt (YUM) but it avoided silly things like people not talking or love triangles.

LOVE.

Plus, I adored that even if he tried for a bit, Tian Qi just toally failed at being a jerk, and gave it up pretty quickly. Heee.

TQ/ZX are so adorable together btw! I love how by the end, he totally returned back to his amused, dorky, teasing self and she reverted to being bossy loudmouth. Awwwww. Just as it should be. Angst is not good for long-term happiness. And Han Zhi Yin = love. That whole family with TQ/AX as mushy-funny newlyweds, and HZY as the teasing half-bro, and the swindly Uncle and 6 yr old NiNi (who helps HZY to pick up chicks LOL) are an awesome family!

Also, I saw some behind the scenes stuff and LOL. My fave was when Jimmy was teasing Hana and she just went 'Oppa!' before continuing with her Mandarin. LOL. I know she is Korean but it was just a cute incongruous bit in it all...

Thia has got to be one of the cutest behind-the-scenes pictures ever:

Am through ep 15 of My Lucky Star. This might be the most perfect 'light' twdrama I have ever seen! Generally, I adore the unusual for twdramas serious ones (The Outsiders is sheer perfection in all its Greek tragedy glory). But when they go for the lighter side of the spectrum, I often find them OTT. Mind you, I enjoy them, but they are about as subtle as a brick.

MLS avoids all of it. Tian Qi and Zhi Xing (and the rest of the characters) might not be in a non-cinema-verite plot but they themselves feel real. And while the earlier eps (1-8) were largely purely giddy screwball delight, these later "5 years after" eps achieve something even cooler: the mix of hilariousness and angst at the same time.

My Lucky Star is a total treasure! It's able to satisfy three fictional kinks of mine at once!

There is the first 10 eps, which is all about fun quirky guy and fun quirky gal fighting the whole world for their love! Then there are the last 9 eps which give me (a) icy withdrawn guy and quirky gal who melts him and (b) guy out for revenge against the gal but he can't help but love her anyway (ep 11 satisfies neither but works it by being angst-central). OMG. Yes. It's like a banquet of yumminess.

I have to say watching eps 11 and first half of 12 was completely painful. I am much much too over-invested in TQ and ZX as individuals and TQ/ZX as a ship. When he wakes up totally disoriented in the hospital and she is gone and he is learning that she sold him out for money and that he can't get his right arm to work (i.e. his racing career is over) and goes completely berserk, or the bit where he somehow manages to stumble back into their shack and she touches his face and arm when he is asleep and then he opens his eyes and looks at her so tenderly and he isn't even angry for her not being in the hospital (or the fact that the reason he is crippled is because he wanted to earn money for her) and she has to push him away because she believes he should not be with her and because she promised his father in exchange for the money to save her goddaughter. ARGH. And she throws away the earring he gave her, which were his dead mother's, and he is on his knees in the rain searching for it. Seriously. I had to watch huge chunks of this on 2x and read subtitles because I got too upset...

And then of course the whole thing with the death of his brother and his blaming himself and his love for ZX for that death. (Side note: I love how normal they are being even in their angst. Brother manages to talk ZX to come and talk to TQ - she loves him too much to stay away. And even if he was rebuffed so badly before, TQ loves and trusts her too much still and so he wants to give it another chance).

And we fade out on his sobbing on his knees by his brother's body in the hospital and wowing to try to do his best as the substitute (i.e. assuming the role in the company, being the 'ideal son') and to never forgive ZX because he believes (reasonably) she just left his older brother to die there and walked away. Not to mention the brother would not have been in the wreck (he thinks) if he didn't go to pick up ZX for him.

But then we are back to my glee! Because it's a time jump and I love those! It's 5 years later. And GLEE! At some point TQ's (awful, controlling) father died, and TQ is now the chairman and he is rather a carbon copy of his father - cold and reserved to the point of being withdrawn, and ruthless, and not letting any emotion come in (though of course, unlike his Dad, with whom it seemed inbred, TQ was a warm person at base before all that trauma so he would be able to get back to it, I am sure). I love love love that shot of the elevator doors closing in on him and the last thing we see are his eyes - cold and so messed up.

I can't wait for ZQ and him to intersect again and to see what happens! Two huge points to MLS at this point.

(1) They didn't do the stupid 'he went all ruthless and cold because he thinks he was betrayed by the love of his life.' If that was it, I'd be all 'shape up, for God's sake!' But when you say that he became ruthless, cold, and shut down because he was sold for some money at the lowest point of his life by the woman he gave up everything for, and he lost the ability to pursue racing which was both his career and his passion and obsession, and his beloved older brother died because of him (he not unreasonably believes) and the woman he loved didn't do anything to stop it, and he also had to replace his dead sibling to compensate...all at the same time. Yeah, that's gonna screw you up major time.

(2) From little we saw of ZX, while I do not doubt she still loves TQ, she is leading a productive and non-miserable life, being a foster Mom to NiNi and good niece to her Uncle and designing jewelry. YES!!!! In a lot of ways, she is stronger than TQ is.

ETA: Ep 13 is loltastic and awesome, with that yummy underpinning of angst. Mmmmm. Also, how does Lee Wei make every drama better just by being in it? (He was the only thing that made Bull-Fighting bearable).

Oh. Oh. OH.

Episode 10 of My Lucky Star made me frelling mist up all over the place. It's evil: it drags you in with the cute and then when you are wholly suckered and invested, hits you with ANGST.

But they were so perfect and loving and selfless and fun together! And he tucked her in and went off to earn money for her to open her dream shop. GRAH.

And when he realizes he lost the race so the mob boss will cripple him for life...GRAH. And it intercuts with ZZ sleeping and TQ being basically beaten to death.

Did I mention TQ's father? Because YES. HATE. HATE. LOATHING. Oh, permit me not to care when you are upset that 'woe is me, poor me, my youngest son is in the hospital having surgery to save his life and no matter what, his right arm will be crippled forever and he will never be able to continue being a racer.' A little too late? And whose fault is it? Not ZX's, though you have the nerve to smack her around and tell her it's all her fault! WTF! He would never be in this situation if you didn't back him into a total corner so it was the only way to get money. I don't even blame you for kicking him out of the house and family because he is dating a girl you do not approve of. He is a grown-up and you are not obligated to support him. But the whole hiring goons and doing everything so that neither his son nor his son's girlfriend could be employed in any gainful way, and doing every dirty trick so they won't get work, won't be able to continue to occupy the place they leased, having their friends all in trouble etc...When he told ZX "You are the one who made him live like a rat." WTF? DIEDIEDIE.

And then he tries to push ZX away again with money so she would leave TQ because sure, that's totally an action of a loving parent, to try to get the woman his kid loves more than life to ditch him at the lowest point of his life, when he needs all the help and encouragement he can get to recover.

DIEDIEDIEDIEDIEDIEDIEDIE.

(But the scene with ZX talking to the unconscious TQ at the hospital...OMG).

Preview for ep 11 promises even more fun things. He is so loving and un-understanding of her sudden change and she is pushing him away and it's killing her. STAB. I will watch it tomorrow because so much angst is bad for me.

ETA: I needed to watch the end of ep 20 right now to get my happy fix and EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!! One Word Spoiler )
