So, do you find yourself thinking that seeing Four in Jade Palace and upcoming BBJX is not enough for you?

Yeah, me neither.

But in case you do crave more of said Qing Emperor, Hou Chuan Zhen Huan is about to come to your rescue. It centers around Zhen Huan, one of Yongzheng's concubines, who later became an empress and the mother of the next emperor. Have a trailer:

To be honest, while pretty, this isn't on my radar because it seems to be all about concubine in-fighting (shockingly, this is not made by Yu Zheng!), which is a topic I find utterly boring (though apparently poor Yongzheng isn't the focus of the heroine's affections in this one either. Poor man can't get a fictional break). If I check it out, it will be solely for its leads. I've loved Sun Li (who portrays Zhen Huan) in what I've seen of Shanghai Bund, and Yongzheng is played by Chen Jian Bin, who may be old enough to be my father, but won me over forever with his tour-de-force performance as Cao Cao in Three Kingdoms 2010.

And speaking of Yu Zheng, I am sure you are aware he's released a 20-min trailer for his thematic (because different time period and characters) sequel to Schemes of Beauty, Mei Ren Tian Xia. To be honest, I am not entirely clear on the plot. In my head it goes something like "blah blah blah intrigue, Ming Dao as twins, Mickey He hotness, gorgeous women, etc". It looks amazing though and YZ's dramas are always my thing, so am very much looking forward to this, even if that haircut does Ming Dao no favors.

You remember my post a couple of days back about Yu Zheng's newest announced drama, Emperor's Beauties, about Xiang Yu, Lu Zhi, Liu Bang, Consort Yu etc etc. And I am sure you remember my horrified reaction at the fact that he cast Ming Dao as Xiang Yu because not only do I not care for MD's acting, I find him absolutely fugly to look at. Much tearing out of hair was had by me because except for the cast thing, it sounded like my dream drama.

Ummm.

Ummmmmm.

Ummmmmmmmmm.

I am not sure how to put this, so here goes: [livejournal.com profile] hanjae found a pic of Ming Dao all got up as Xiang Yu and ummmm...not bad at all he looks freaking hot!!!!

Pic here behind the cut )

Ummm. I can't believe I am thinking that about Ming Dao, of all people. Seriously. I never even found him remotely tolerable-looking in anything. And all of a sudden I am going hormonal. Is this a parallel universe or something? Did I fall through a hole in time-space continuum? Is this opposite day?

I do not know, all I know is that if a beard can change a guy so much, Ming Dao should never be allowed to shave on pain of death.

Seriously.

On the plus side, shallow me is now looking forward to EB very very much. I still don't think Ming Dao's acting is much to write home about unless the beard also endowed him with magic acting prowess, but hey - I don't demand my actors to be both talented and hot. Just one of the two will do. Witness the entirety of Mike He's career.

(thanks to [livejournal.com profile] ockoala for the heads-up)!

Yu Zheng apparently recently announced a new drama, called The Emperor's Beauties and this has caused a perfect storm of conflict within yours truly.

On one hand, Yu Zheng's dramas, whatever you may think of his 'borrowing' tendencies, are (1) incredibly lavish and lush and gorgeous-looking, and (2) completely addictive and, if Jade Palace Lock Heart, Four Women Conflict, and Schemes of Beauty, made completely to my specs.

Plus, this particular drama will center around Xiang Yu, the warlord who overthrew the Qin Empire but eventually lost to Liu Bang, who founded the Han Empire. With the two female leads being Empress Lu, Liu Bang's smart and ruthless wife, and Consort Yu, Xiang Yu's legendary star-crossed OTP. Xiang Yu and his OTP are my favorite ever drama secondary OTP (in The Myth) so a whole drama centered around them is heaven. And the time period is complex and interesting.

So why am I not jumping around in glee and screaming my joy?

The cast.

Oh, God, the cast. It's like my perfect drama wrapped in my perfect nightmare cast.

Apparently, casting Ming Dao as the lead in a JPLH-but-not-really movie wasn't a fluke. It seems Yu Zheng has glommed onto his next leading man and that man is Ming Dao. Why? Why????? The man is ugly, can't act, has no on-screen charisma, and projects a vibe that makes me want to smack him. I've tried dramas with him repeatedly and in every single one I ended up wanting to put my fist through the screen. He's one of only two male actors who are on my automatic "will not watch, no matter what else is in play" list (the other one being Ryu Shiwon). Oh, and he has insane fangirls who think if his character attempts to rape another character it's OK because he's hot.

I also really dislike Chen Qiao En, who's been cast as Empress Lu (bzuh? How a life of playing a shrill idiot in OTT romcoms prepare you for the role I have no idea), but this bugs me less because Empress Lu has traditionally been portrayed as blood-thirsty, cruel and pretty evil. So at least my feelings of dislike for the actress might actually help me enjoy the performance. But Ming Dao is playing the freaking hero!

Consort Yu is still not cast, but by this point they could cast Yang Mi or Fan Bing Bing or even Crystal Liu, and I still won't care because it would be hard to overcome the above combination.

Why why why, Yu Zheng?

If this is the drama Feng Shao Feng turned down, pissing off YZ in the process, I am going to tear out my hair.

You know JPLH the movie sequel to JPLH the drama?

Apparently Yu Zheng has lost his marbles entirely and cast Ming Dao as the main male role. Ming Dao. As the main male role. Anyone remember Ming Dao in the drama? I didn't think so.

No, he is not playing Eight as FSF is still in this but had his role drastically reduced (no idea why and, honestly, don't care why, just care about the outcome). Ming Dao, who is hands down my least favorite tw/cdrama actor and this close to making it on my "won't watch if he's in it no matter what else is going on" list, is playing an 18th century general (replacing the drama actor who played Xiao Chun who became that general).

Bwahahahaha.

Oh no you didn't. FengMi were JPLH's biggest selling point and you just threw it away. Are you sure you thought this through?

The plot of the movie sounded iffy from the get-go (something about Eight not hacking it in the modern world, disappearing, QC tracking him down and finding the source of Eight and Four's 'eternal battle' (wtf - I don't think she needed to look for anything special - they bth want the throne and the girl, not that complex)) but I was still going to watch this for FSF/Yang Mi's chemistry.

Instead, this is going to have barely any scenes with them, throw in love rivals who get the lion's share of the screen-time (honestly, by the end, haven't QC/Eight moved past any stage where a love rival is even feasible?), and possibly screw the ship over and "compensate" me by making me look at Ming Dao for two hours straight, a Ming Dao who might be making out with Yang Mi for all I know?

That's like the perfect anti-movie for me. No thanks. It's not as if JPLH has an open ending so I need to see the movie.

Clearly, JPLH joins the long list of dramas I adored that ended up having second seasons or sequel movies I wouldn't touch with a ten-foot pole - Meteor Garden 2, Black and White movie, IRIS the movie (and Athena). The sole time a drama I loved had a sequel I adored was Hana Yori Dango s2.

Buh-bye, movie. There's still two dramas they are doing together to compensate me, so I am not feeling too bad.
