I adore the new (to me) Tenth Doctor. Watched not only ‘The Christmas Invasion’ but the ep following last night, because couldn’t have just one.

OMG. How come I waited so long! There is nothing as awesome as watching Dr. Who with Mr. Mousie, both of us loving it to the bottom of our geeky hearts. I am sure I have mentioned before that I adore Rose Tyler and Billie Piper. But in case I haven’t? I do. When I grow up, I want to be like Rose Tyler. Only I am already grown up, so I guess it’s a missed opportunity after all.

And David Tennant? Oh my. I loved Christopher Eccleston in the role. And the pics I’ve seen of David Tennant weren’t particularly preposessing, you know? But I guess he is one of those people who is telegenic and not photogentic, because from his entrance on, he blew me away. (Oh, and yeah, he is devastatingly attractive, in a rumpled intellectual kinda way). Ten and Rose share crackling good chemistry, too. It’s different than the one with Nine and Rose. More flirty, less desperate?

But then this is a different Doctor, too, isn’t he? Nine was hard, but it came across as shell-shock. Ten? Is much harder. In his off-kilter, charming way, he is infinitely scarier, edgier than Nine. I would not cross him for anything.

Ep specific thoughts )

Can’t wait to watch more tonight.

In other, drama news:

The Outsiders really is a story about your good qualities being your weekenesses, isn’t it? Because Ah Hao’s sense of honor, his loyalty to those he considers close, is normally a wonderful thing. But in the cutthroat world he is in, it’s a huge detriment.

Thoughts on ep 17 )

And I am thinking about first ep of Japanese version of Hana Kimi. I’ve enjoyed it, and will continue to liveblog, but I do prefer the Taiwanese version. And that brought something home to me: I generally prefer Taiwanese adaptation of manga to Japanese ones. My favorite drama is, after all, the former: Mars (yeah, I decided The Outsiders is second after all. It’s a little too bleak to win over hard-won hopefulness of Mars).

Part of it is simply that Taiwanese dramas seem to be more faithful adaptations of the manga (Mars, Meteor Garden, Devil Beside You, Hana Kimi etc) versus the rather free-wheeling approach of jdrama adaptations (Hanadan was very loose inside the same structure and Hana Kimi looks similar).

But generally, I just like the Taiwanese adaptations better. I adored Hanadan, but not half so much as I loved Meteor Garden. Taiwanese ‘It Started with a Kiss’ is one of the delights of the drama world, but Itazura No Kiss is not very good. This new Hana Kimi is fun, but it (to be fair, at least so far) doesn’t have the pure sugar-spun cracky goodness of the Taiwanese version. Odd.

And I close with bringing you caps.

Of The Outsiders eps 16-17.

Also, I had a couple of Why Why Love caps so here they are.

Apparently ep 1 of Hana Kimi is out on youtube. Whyyyyyyy am I not where I can get to youtube?

In other news, I was completely brain-dead last night so I didn't watch The Outsiders but instead let my mind go completely and watched ep 1 of Why Why Love, a wacky Taiwanese drama with Rainie Yang and Mike He that is as cracky and fluffy as The Outsiders is not. I dare anyone to meta it deeply :P

Well, I watched 20 or so minutes and then went to bed, but it's total love. Really. Rainie Yang's character is cute and spunky and adorable. Our male protagonist? Is a brat, and his father doesn't love him, and he is played by Mike He. So it's basically a trifecta of perfection right there. Kingone is his own awesome self, too. He will never get the heroine of course, as he has the Jiro syndrome (in rl, a serious be-suited businessman is much more my thing than a bad boy but whatever, this is what fiction is for) but hopefully will get a secondary OTP of his own.

Some adorable caps. You will die of the cute )

Verdict? Incredibly cute brain candy.

This morning, I did watch more of The Outsiders which continues to be awesome.

Spoilers through first half of ep 16 )

Apologies. I realize that this LJ turned into The Outsiders zone lately. But I have gone mad for it the way I haven't for any drama since Mars. And I only have five and a half eps left so it will be over realtively soon :)

Also, because I don't want to scare people off watching it, it's angsty but not depressing in the least. So go watch! :)

Thoughts on ep 15:

Oh Goddammit. I am barely five minutes into episode 15 and I am sobbing.

Stop doing it to me, drama. Because Ah Hao is completely drunk, and the annoying mainland girl goes looking for him and she finds him and asks if he is OK (lady, he is on the floor, crying. Chances are, no he isn't). And he is so out of it and so drunk that he actually sees her as Yu Yen and he starts saying Yu Yen's name and when he looks up at her and is all 'you've finally come, Yu Yen' and he is crying and smiling at the same time, like a temporary reprieve from hell, I...

GOD.

Incoherent rambling on first half of ep 15 )

And here are screencaps. Why, yes, they are mainly of Dylan Kuo.

Am currently learning how to hardsub. Am a geek but it's exciting. Let's see if it works. I also need to figure out which format I need to convert avi files into in order to make them DVD compatible. Any tips? (because it gives me different formats for output files but I don't know which one is DVD compatible). (Though I guess I might just spring for a DVD player that plays avi files, but still, want to know).

In other news. Yup, still on The Outsiders.

The thing is Hong Do is spot on in telling her she should try to be open with Ah Hao (not about the rape of course) and talk about 'flowers and piano' like she used to. That way Ah Hao won't be looking for shadows of Yu Yen everywhere, he'd have the real thing. But I love the look on YY's face when Hong Do says that. How can she be that simple happy girl again? She can't, not after that night when Bao Ge ripped all her innocence from her.

Thoughts on first half of ep 14 )

And here are some pics from that part.

Oh GOD. The woobies have SO MUCH heartbreak. Because she did think he cheated (and omg his face when he found out that is what she thought) and she tries to be 'compliant' because she feels guilty in her lack but he interprets it as her not even caring enough to be upset that he was with another woman. ARGH.

And OMG. He ends up going to a club and getting drunk as fast as he can and is just with his head in his hands on the table and he is sobbing her name and FUCK.

Seriously. And then he comes home in the morning and by that point she found out the truth but he is all shut off again and FUUUUUUUCK.

Seriously, would it have been better for her to have told him about the rape? I mean, would the consequences be worse? Especially if Danzi already killed the rapist. (And they wouldn't need to let him know Bao Ge was behind it all).

Also, honestly. It's awesome to rescue Mainland Girl's cousin in abstract, but it's going to get them in a lot of trouble and possibly killed and a total stranger ain't worth it.

Some pictures )

P.S. I really like how Uncle Huai points out that not only Bao Ge is scum but the ultimate boss is too, and Ah Hao was foolish to get involved with them, and even more naive for talking about honor with them. And (I see foreshadowing here) adds that one of these days they'll sell him out. That's the problem, isn't it? Ah Hao isn't good enough for normal world, but too honest for the mob.

If Ah Hao ever cheats on Yu Yen with Xiao Die (the girl who reminds him of premob YY) this will be the weirdest proof of love ever but that is what it would be (not that I think he will or anything, though he might, just thinking). I know, it sounds insane, but it really just highlights how hung up he is on YY. Because he is so seeing XD as the earlier YY, his chance to treat YY right. Just look at his face when he sees XD all tarted up. He recognizes the necessity but it's like watching destruction of his YY all over again.

I am halfway through episode 12 of The Outsiders.

This is, honestly, the most complex drama I’ve seen. If I didn’t know better, I would have sworn it was an adaptation (or a transplantation actually) of those mid-century French and German novels I used to read.

On a more shallow front, Dylan Kuo has displaced Mike He as the second hottest Taiwanese guy I’ve ever seen. And the jury is out on whether he is going to displace Vic Zhou, up till now the hottest spot holder ;) And I definitely now get why Barbie Hsu went out with Blue Lan. Whoa.

Also, if Bali is a dark mirror to Hanadan, I think this is a dark mirror to Mars.
