Since Men and Legends is on my short list, I checked out the first ep, which I saw ages ago and liked, but it was so long ago that I needed a refresher.

M&L is supposed to be about two young martial artists who try to solve a murder, prevent treason, have OTPs, and go through a wagonload of angst. All in 1920 Shanghai. So basically the usual.

But after ep 1, I maintain that the true legend and mystery of this drama is how come Dylan Kuo and Peter Ho are sporting completely modern hairstyles despite everyone else having period-appropriate hair. I don't think feathering, highlights, or earrings were much used by martial artists in 1920 but what do I know. Below pic doesn't show Peter Ho's hair very well but shows Dylan's perfectly in all its highlighted, conditioned glory:

And while this pic is not from M&L, this is exactly the cut + earring Peter Ho character sports in it. As a martial artist in 1920! ROFL.

I am most amused. You can never ever wreck the idols' hair :P

Tbh, I don't mind. I like this sort of hair a lot better than historically appropriate slicked look and it's about people who can kick through buildings, so how realistic is it anyway?

I won't watch this properly until I finish Warriors and Gong, but after that, here I come! Because snarking aside, I really liked the first ep.

1. If there is anything cuter than Yang Mi and Feng Shao Feng (a.k.a. my current obssession Qing Chuan and Eight a.k.a. period Makino and Domyouji in JPLH) singing together on some variety show, I have yet to see it.

I don't care about the weird background/dancers or the fact that FSF, while he sounds nice for not a professional, should stick to acting. I don't care. Because OH THE CUTE, IT KILLS ME. I want to squish them into one adorable ball of squee. When is the JPLH sequel coming out again? Not that I finished JPLH itself yet. Though I should probably stop haunting withs2 for more Jade Palace Lock Heart subs - if I check every few hours, the status won't change.

Semi-related, from browsing on-line, I noticed people either really love JPLH and think upcoming BBJX is not their cup of tea, or really dislike JPLH and really look forward to BBJX. There is not much overlap. Hmmmm. (Disclosure - I am fully in the former camp).

2. Speaking of cute couples I adore, I continued with twdrama Endless Love with Wilbur Pan and Sandrine Panna.

I saw the first three eps, fell madly in love, then got sidetracked and was waiting for a lot of dlable files/subs so I could binge. Well, I started the binge, am on ep 4 and still - I have no words for how much I love it. As [livejournal.com profile] ockoala is to Happiness is a Sunny Day is [livejournal.com profile] dangermousie to Endless Love. Most of my love is motivated by my ridiculous, irrational, protective love of Wilbur and Sandrine's characters - they are such lovely and realistic people (I especially love Wilbur's character - I feel ridiculously emotionally overinvested in him) - and their explosive chemistry. Nobody does a romantic drama quite like twdramas. I know this one is going to break my heart before giving me the inevitable happy ending, and I am ready for the ride.

A few more unspoilery caps of the two )

And speaking of the two of them, even though I posted this MV before, I love it so much, it merits a repost. I dare anyone watching it not wanting to check out the drama.

3. I only had time for one ep of Young Warriors of the Yang Clan today. I finally understand why some fangirls ship Lady Blacksmith with Yelu Xie.

They do share a great deal of chemistry plus Yuan Hong is a good-looking and charismatic guy.

But I am still on the Five/Blacksmith ship. Seriously, hotness or not, Yelu Xie is sworn to invade and destroy Blacksmith's country, likely killing scores of her friends and acquiantances in the process. Not to mention he's palling around with the guy who killed her parents and has no problem with said guy offing tons of innocents to help him invade. Good boyfriend material he's not. Also, Five is not only righteous and upright but totally adorable.

A couple of caps )

4. Dream High ended today. I completely lost interest in it during the second half (I think I am just too old for those types of stories). But I do plan to check out the concert special tomorrow. Singing and dancing yay.

5. The first two eps of The Holy Pearl are subbed on viki.

6. O-M-G. Unless I am very much mistaken, the below is Yu Yutong-centric MV from the 2009 version of The Book and the Sword a.k.a. the only Louis Cha novel I've read. Talking to [livejournal.com profile] hamster428 reminded me how much I liked the guy - he was basically my crush from the book. I mean, the scholar/fighter/flute player/likes to cut himself is a combo made just for moi.

I know that Jiang Hu is subbing this. Off to look as soon as I finish Yang Clan. Qing hairstyles bother me less and less.

7. And speaking of wuxias on my short list, my raging obsession with Peter Ho shows no signs of abating so I got my DVDs of Men and Legends out and plan to get on them after I finish Yang Clan - it will make a nice counterpoint to The Book and the Sword. Turn of the century! Dylan Kuo and Peter Ho! OTPs! From what I am aware of, Peter Ho and his OTP, who's a plucky reporter, are cute for most of the run of the drama until they get hit with the angst hammer and are beaten into bloody bits with it. Ah, yes, it's a Peter Ho drama all right.

A couple of MVs )

8. Despite my misgivings, I decided to give the first ep of Midas a try. We'll see how it goes. Oh, Jang Hyuk, see what you make me do!

OK, this is getting very long, so good-night, everyone!

That is, Infernal Lover - a 40 ep Mainland drama that recently finished airing. I remember they were filming this but did not realize they were done.

IL is set at the turn of the century and stars Mike He and Deng Jia Jia as, respecitvely, an undercover nationalist agent and a beggar girl who falls in love with his kindness. There is a lot of intrigue, guns, and period clothes. Being a Chinese drama involving a civil war, I can just foresee how well it will end. The question is not if anyone will die but how many corpses will we be dealing with precisely.

No downloadable subs/subbed DVDs are out yet, but viikii is subbing it. I am so excited to start on this! It is turning out that Chinese period dramas are my favorite ones. I am also curious to see Mike He in a role which actually demands he act (I adore him, though he usually coasts on his sweet bad boy image, but the one time I saw him actually bother to act - Love Contract, he was darn good).

Plus, look at this shippy adorableness in the form of the nonspoilery MV

I am on such a ridiculous c/twdrama kick, it's insane - am watching LOCH 2008, Yang Brothers, Easy Fortune Happy Life, Summer Desire, Men and Legends, and now Infernal Lover. At the same time.

Shall I ever return to kdrama pastures? Once Bad Guy comes back on, probably.

Conversation with [livejournal.com profile] alexandral reminded me I have never finished Men and Legends with Dylan Kuo and Peter Ho as two martial arts students out to avenge the death of their master in turn-of-century China, with brief interruptions like becoming an assassin for the mob, jail, arson, accidental murder of relatives of girlfriend, and drug addiction.

Anyway, I am going insane hunting for one of the dvds (eps 5-8 are on it) because I stuck it somewhere outside the box and now it went awol. We have a tiny house with a terrifying amount of stuff, especially DVDs and books, so finding it is going to be a chore. I am slowly going insane because I am obsessive and when I have a craving I need to sate it NOW.

Here is ep 1, part 1:

Anyway, while I angst (though thankfully minus drugs and murders), have a MV of Peter Ho and his OTP (sadly I cannot find one of Dylan Kuo and his, booo!)

1. I am totally watching Boys Over Flowers ep 18. I am completely over the J-quadrupled angst-fest but the emo in this ep sounds cracktastic and I am so in it for Yi Jung/Ga Eul.

2. Ep 4 of To Get Her (I am in the middle of it) is as wonderful and pitch perfect as the first three. It's been a long time since I adored all the main characters so and the slightly delicately whimsical tone is perfect. I love this drama too much for words, honest. Also, Momo/Mars is so my new huge OTP. For one, I love that they are figuring out they like each other early on. I hate it when the characters have emotional maturity and self-knowledge of turnips.

3. A SUBBING GROUP HAS PICKED UP ILJIMAE.

I will be able to watch in HQ dls and not little streaming windows. And keep it.

!!!!!!!!

4. I have started the Chinese drama Men and Legends starring Dylan Kuo and Peter Ho.

It's set in 1920s China and the two leads are eventual BFFs who are students of two different famous kung fu masters who end up fighting the Japanese.

There are OTPs (Dylan is adorable with his), cool clothes, martial arts, and much hotness. I can't say I care for Peter's character too much yet - bratty but good-natured tricksters are usually not my thing, but he is hot in it, and Dylan is both super super hot and plays a type of character I really like - serious and naive (even innocent) and worshipping the ground his OTP walks on. Me wants! I'll have pretty caps at some point, if I can cap my DVDs.

I have no idea if the drama is good (I have seen too little to judge yet) but it's certainly very pretty!

Lots of pretty pretty behind the cut )

dangermousie: (Handsome Siblings OTP by meganbmoore)

EEEE! Got my hands on the English-subbed version of Da Ren Wu (Big Shot or Hero, I have seen it translated both ways), last year's wuxia drama starring Nicholas Tse and Angelica Lee. It's based on a novel I've never read and the plot sounds so delicious:

Naïve, young Tian Si Si (Angelica), the apple of her father’s eye and the sole heir to her family’s riches, believes that she is in love with the great romantic hero, Qin Ge of the Meteor Clan. She dreams of traveling the martial arts world, actually meeting Qin Ge and having adventures just like many of the stories that she has read and heard. From childhood, she has been betrothed to the younger son of General Yang, Yang Fan (Nic), whom she despises.

Handsome, melancholy, talented Yang Fan has been on a mission for his father to secretly investigate the Meteor Clan whose upright reputation and strength has been rising in the martial arts world to rival that of Shaolin and Wudang. He comes back injured and somewhat changed, troubled with memory loss after an investigation. He marries Tian Si Si as his father ordered, but Tian Si Si has other plans for her life and runs away at the first opportunity. She quickly becomes entangled in plots and counter plots as she discovers the real world. Both Yang Fan and Qin Ge are ordered to go after her. All is not what it seems as the Meteor Clan and its members, rivals and government agents are at work behind the scenes.

Seriously, how many ways do I love the premise?

* Couple falling in love after marriage? Check. Though seeing your arranged match is Nicholas Tse it's not really a hardship
* Cooky heroine
* Angst and funniness
* Love triangle
* Nic Tse as the lead (if Handsome Siblings was all about him, it would be such a huge fave). I mean, he doesn't even need to act, he can just stand there and I'll ogle him.

Look at the cute MV for the OTP (with hints of a triangle):

I think I fell for it about the time he let her (she is possessed) stab him through the shoulder. I am so predictable!

I have also got Men and Legends (Dylan Kuo and Peter Ho, does it really need a plot?) and Fairy from Wonderland (finally. I want to see Hu Ge write on the walls in blood).

But all this shall not sate me!

I need Legend of Condor Heroes and I can't find any subs except for Vietnamese yet. I need! Please!!!

I mean, look. I want this now:

OK, will distract self with another favorite wuxia OTP (Flower/Orchid from Handsome Siblings. Angsty assassins and common-sense fighter girls ftw).

* Cooky heroine
* Angst and funniness
* Love triangle

I have been very bad about replying to flister posts lately, my apologies. I do read every single post on my flist that is not a comm post. *note to self. be better about replying*

Anyway, we went to see two movies this weekend: The Simpsons Movie and Stardust. I loved both. Though if I never see another set of trailers as bad as the ones before TSM, I'll be a happy woman. People are annoyed at Tom Cruise for being a crazy scientologist, but my beef with him is his movie Jerry McGuire giving prominence to Cuba Gooding Jr., thus leading to movies like Daddy Day Camp.

The Simpsons Movie was hilarious. I don't remember last time I laughed so hard in the theater. And I've seen about three Simpsons eps total, in my life. And now, Spiderpig song is stuck in my head...

Stardust was simply lovely. It was a fairy tale for grown-ups, something that is very rare in Hollywood, though there are a number of lovely Russian movies in this genre. It was scary and funny and moving and colorful. Also, great cast and casting. Much as all the side characters were amazing and attention-grabbing, the two protagonists, Tristan the shopboy on a quest (Charlie Cox) and Yvaine the falling star (Claire Danes), never got lost in the shuffle. Also, (because it's me and I am bound to be shallow at regular intervals) Charlie Cox is hot once he learns to swashbuckle.

The story is about a 19th century English young man, Tristan, who crosses into the faerie realm of Stormhold, to bring back a fallen star in order to win the heart of the girl he is infatuated with. But when he finds her, the fallen star is actually a beautiful, lost (and snarky) young woman named Yvaine. And a number of unsavory individuals are after her, including a witch who wants to eat her still beating heart to restore her youth and a murderous royal family who want to settle the right of succession.

The whole thing is, on some level, like one of those Grimm fairytales. The original versions, with toes being cut off and eyes plucked out by pidgeons, not the Disneyfied versions. The faerie realm of Stormhold really is a wondrous place: a place full of wonders, some of which you might even survive.

Some stills from the movie. Not spoilery )

Brief spoilery comment )

Oh, and another awesome thing: the Chinese period martial arts drama Men and Legends, starring Peter Ho and Dylan Kuo (as [livejournal.com profile] calledinvain pointed out correctly, the Asian Heath Ledger and Orlando Bloom) is coming subbed to DVD on Aug 31. Yay.
