I felt in the mood for something sunny and happy-making this morning, and something I haven't watched to death. Solution? I finally finished Mary Stayed Out All Night (Marry Me Mary), a so-very-flawed but oh-so-darling drama from 2010.

I very rarely care for kdrama romcoms but I went rabid for MMM when it aired. Its quirky, offbeat vibe appealed to me and I really fell for its protagonists, Mary and Mugyul, and the ridiculous chemistry between Moon Geun Young and Jang Geun Seok (in fact, MMM was the drama that converted me to a JGS fangirl - prior to it I was actually a bit of an anti). The problem was everything else - every other character was annoying and/or boring, the script derailed and kept derailing like a rollecoaster about to collapse (at one point, the writer apparently considered killing off Mugyul, only to be thwarted by JGS. You have to have seen the drama to realize how insane that was from plot, character and vibe standpoint).

MMM was, by no definition of the word, a good drama. And yet I loved it. It belongs to that small but treasured categories of dramas where you know they are, objectively, bad, but the OTP is so lovely, you don't care. (Myung Wol the Spy is another drama like that. So was Lie to Me for a lot of people, though not me).

I bailed after ep 12, but I felt in the mood today, and finished it, with selective fastfowarding (i.e., every scene without our OTP). And my verdict stands - very flawed, appallingly written (oh, what they could have done with the writer of Shut Up! It could have been a lovely story about musicians, hipsters, hippies et al.), but the OTP just makes me forget everything and feels my heart with joy and love.

Darling darling caps of my darling darling OTP from ep 16. I dare you not to love them. )

Have an adorable MV:

If you read this journal with any regularity, you know that kdrama romcoms and I don't really mesh and haven't for the last few years. Hybrid kdramas with some romcom elements I can fall madly for (Secret Garden and Prosecutor Princess come to mind) but proper romcoms I have truly loved in the last few years - I think the count is at zero. The closest I came to was with Mary Stayed Out Last Night, where I bailed by ep 12, but first the first 2/3 of the drama very addictive as far as the OTP went even as I disliked everything else.

That is why I continue to be completely shocked that I am adoring Myung Wol the Spy so. There is no question MW is every inch a romcom. And yet I am so so so so addicted. Despite my romcom trepidation, I checked out MW for two reasons (1) I find Eric hella sexy and (2) the story synopsis - North Korean agent ordered to seduce and marry a Hallyu star - was going to be good or bad but would always be interesting. But I did not expect to really love it. Imagine my shock when, eight episodes in, I am still addicted - I laugh, I find the story (such as it is - it's a romcom, thus not particularly plot driven) interesting, and I swoon like mad at the OTP chemistry. And unlike with Mary (or Heartstrings), I like the drama in general, not just suffer through the other bits to get to the OTP. I cannot wait to watch eps 9 and 10, which is what I plan on doing as soon as I post this, in fact.

Also, in ep 8, KW found out MW was after him for ulterior motives (though not that she is a NK agent :P)

Please tell me this will result in another angsty shower scene:

Oh, and ep 8 was the one with this. Finally. Mmmmmm.

Bring on more! This MV, which includes stuff from 9 and 10, makes me salivate.

Three of Mousie's favorite leading men all have upcoming dramas and, more excitingly, all three of those dramas sound amazing!!!!

1. As per Dramabeans, Jang Geun Seok has been cast by PD Yoon Suk Ho in his upcoming romantic drama Love Rides the Rain. JGS will play not one but two (!!!!!) leading men, separated by a generation. OMGOMGOMGOMG. For those who do not recognize his name, PD YSH is the man who brought us the biggest, emoest, most gorgeous Hallyu hits i.e. the Four Seasons dramas. They have their detractors but I loved Winter Sonata and Spring Waltz is one of my all-time favorites (have not seen Summer Scent, loved what I saw of Autumn Tale but the misery-filled ending made me wary of continuing). If this was announced this time last year, I would have been a little disappointed because of my lack of interest in JGS, but I confess Mary Stayed Out Last Night made me a hopeless fangirl. So JGS! In a likely gorgeous and romantic drama directed by a hit-making, awesome PD? Bring it on!

At the risk of turning into one of those fans, a small and ridiculous part of me is ridiculously hoping for Moon Geun Young to be cast as one of the leading ladies. Time to rewatch Mary, I believe.

2. As per Koalasplayground, Jung Woo Sung is also back - he is set to be the lead of Noh Hee Kyung's Padam Padam opposite Han Ji Min. *cosmic scream* I adore Jung Woo Sung to an unhealthy degree (Koala, if you are reading, he's yours, he's yours, I would not dare to fight Koala claws :P) Noh Hee Kyung penned my favorite kdrama of all time, Worlds Within, and I adore Han Ji Min (Capital Scandal, Resurrection, Cain & Abel) with a ridiculous degree of love. Plus, as Koala noted, the height difference is going to be mmmmmmmmm. I am extra-excited because JWS almost never makes dramas. His only drama in the last 15 (!!!!) years was the horrible disaster that was Athena (I curse your name, drama!). So EEEEEEE!!!!!!

3. As per pretty much everywhere in the drama world, Kim Rae Won is about to be discharged from his military service and is set to star opposite Su Ae (who I have yet to love in anything, but I remain eternally optimistic) in Thousand Day Promise, a romantic melodrama by Kim Soo Hyun (Life is Beautiful) about a man faced with the fact that the woman he loves is slowly forgetting him. Think A Moment to Remember or The Notebook and get out the tissues (I am going to ignore the fact that even early-onset Alzheimer's is still decades too old for Su Ae). Eeeee! Kim! Rae! Won! is back.

Whenever Heartstrings tries to do traditional plot, it falters - I have zero interest in performance shenanigans - it's a school production, not Broadway, and in any event, Gyu Won is a gageum player, not an actress so whether she gets to perform or stay an understudy seems supremely not to matter for her future (that is why Hee Joo and her mother's plotting strikes me as kinda insane). And Shin has a band and will continue to have it and perform and write music whatever goes on with the anniversary show (yeah, it's a fun exercise for him to write a fusion classical/rock piece but that is all that is) so to ask me to be invested seems weird. And I continue to have zero interest in the various-rival-professors storyline. I don't hate the plotty bits or anything but in comparison with organic, realistic, freestyle 'Shin and Gyuwon fall in love' aspect which feels like you are peeking on real people, it falls flat. Most of this ep, however, was not plot but Shin and Gyuwon together, and so I was a happy happy camper.

Also? How much do I love that there is no stupid misunderstanding on Shin's part that Gyuwon likes the Director. For once, a male lead who uses his brains!

Caaaaaaps of gorgeousness here )

This drama reminds me a lot of Mary Stayed Out All Night and not just because of rocker-falls-for-girl storyline. The script of HS makes about a million times more sense than MSOAN's, but they share the same thing - whenever the plot happens it just gets in the way of what really makes the drama tick - the insane chemistry between the leads and the quirkiness and appeal of the main twosome.

Is it possible to fall in love with the drama from the trailer? Because I just did - the colors and the vibe (reminds me of my own college days, only I hooked up with a hot polisci major, not a hot musician :P) and just everything. I want!!!!!!!!!!! Best Love, end already so Heartstrings can start, k?

Also, I realized that I never finished Mary Stayed Out All Night because the second writer went sort of insane and I dropped it. Hmmm, I think now it's long over and I am v.v. spoiled for it, I can just forward to Mary/Mugyul parts I haven't seen (or would they, too, drive me nuts?).

I've cleaned up most of my Rock Rock Rock caps (there may be an additional small batch of more ep 4 caps coming) so here they are. Warning (though is it really the kind of thing one needs to warn about?): 90% of these are of No Min Woo, in part because the drama is all about him, all the time, and in part because he's ridiculously gorgeous.

Not sure if this reference is going to make sense to a lot of my flist, but after watching this, I've finally found someone to play Sakuya in the in-my-head adaptation of Sensual Phrase - sexy and messed-up rocker? Yup - perfect. I've never really found anyone who fit my mental idea of it before but now I have. (Obviously this is only in my head but who cares as chances of SP being adapted as live action anywhere = zero, due to it being majorly x-rated).

Caps caps caps - and remember Just Say No )

So, I just learned on ockoala's blog that the MSOAN replacement writer initially planned to kill Mugyul in ep 15.

!!!!!!!!!!!!

My brain just doesn't process it. MSOAN is no gangster drama or period epic but the fluffiest of all fluffy romcoms. If you tried to fill a thimble with all the angst in it, there would be space left over! In fact, it's so devoid of any credible threat that I am wracking my brain trying to figure out what on earth the cause of death would be - did Mugyul choke on his hair? Trip over his feet while at a knife factory? Suffered a brain aneurism due to insanity of the script? (the last one is most likely).

Not to mention - where would the drama go on from there? I can see some dramas pulling it off - Bad Guy would have been a much better drama if it stuck to its initial plan of killing Kim Nam Gil's character in ep 17 and spending the next 3 eps on the fall-out - but MSOAN isn't exactly BG with its large and very developed cast of characters for whom KNG is merely a catalyst.

Insane.

I have no problems with protagonists keeling over - my favorite drama, The Myth, has a horrifying 'rocks fall everyone dies' ending. But The Myth is a grim period epic which deals with morality, heroism, and choices. During the run, some truly horrifying things happen to the protagonist, another major character gets castrated, the heroine is forced to be a concubine of a monster, the end of secondary OTP made me pause the vids so I could have hysterics so badly that I had to go puke in the bathroom. A rocks-fall ending isn't particularly a shock. But here - lunacy!

I have no idea why she chose to drop it - PD, actors, her own common sense? But the fact that she thought of it in the first place - WTF!
