Dude.

DUDE.

Angsty Joe Cheng. In suits. Holding a baby. With a lot of kissing (of the baby's mother, not the baby, thankfully).

This MV for the twdrama Magic Ring is doing things to my hormones.

MV behind cut )

I am only about four eps in and sort of got sidetracked because the subs are poor and because I totally hate the heroine (seriously! Eeeek!) But this reminds me I really really should continue soon. I mean, the whole 'I am someone who his father never loved. And now I am in love with the girl who I think is the pregnant fiance of my dead idolized brother. Only she isn't' is so full of angst potential.

OK, Magic Ring might have lousy subs but they are understandable. Nine Balls has no subs at all. How am I to satisfy my Joe Cheng craving? (An aside: why are there all those unsubbed Joe Cheng and Mike He dramas? They are hot, they are popular, so whyyyyy?)

Plus, Nine Balls looks interesting, and not just because he is so smoking. (Btw, I just thought about something really random. If they ever did a twdrama version of Kurosagi, he is so someone I'd pick for Yamapi's role. He can do withdrawn very well. And angsty too. And because I am a pathetic fandom girl, Ariel Lin can be Tsurara.)

Nine Balls MV. I'd embed it but embedding has been disabled for this vid.

Check it out. Seriously. It's the best thing in forever.

P.S. He plays the 'other guy' in Nine Balls. You have to be kidding me. It's from the same barrel of ideas which made Kang Dong-Won to have unrequieted love in Temptation of Wolves. Only here, they don't even have an excuse of him being her half-sibling. Yeah, I'll buy that. Just like I'll buy that Juhi prefers what's his name over Shahrukh Khan in Ram Jaane or that Clark is mentally damaged enough to prefer Lana over Lex. Yeah.

I am currently watching Sang-Doo, Let’s Go to School (Korean dorama with Rain) and Magic Ring (Taiwanese dorama with Joe Cheng).

I would classify both of them as entertaining but not great. Of the two, Sang-Doo is superior (though considering I am 10 eps into SD and only one into MR, this can change), with tighter script and less OTT acting. But Magic Ring is a joyfully giddy pleasure. I’ve summed it up before (just click on the ‘magic ring’ tag in my lj) so I won’t do it again, but I have to say the plot is making me all gleeful.

Magic Ring meta )

So far, I like all the clothes in this (in general, Twdramas give me least to complain about on that scale) except for the bizarro credit clothes where someone thought it was a good idea to give Joe Cheng a quasi-roman perm and a tunic to boot. WTF?

I do wish the subtitles were better. They are comprehensible (unlike the scary, gibberish subs of official versions of ISWAK and Goong) but are indubitably ‘Engrish’ and it throws me a bit to have people like a high-class lawyer or a Board Chairman speak in a grammatically incorrect and sometimes misspelled fashion. There are no fan subs for this though and the subs are passable, so far be it from me to complain.

The other dorama I am watching is Sang-Doo, Let’s Go to School. I am on ep 10 and have been watching this off and on for a month. I enjoy it but am not mad for it so when other doramas I get obsessed with come up, they get priority. I have also summarized it before (click on ‘sang-doo’ tag), so I am going to get straight to meta.

This is a good but not great dorama. I guess it can be summed up by saying that I like it a lot but I am not mainlining it like heroin the way I did with doramas like A Love to Kill or Mars or Pride. Part of the reason is that this is Rain’s first dorama and it shows. He is adequate but far from being as excellent as he was in A Love to Kill and while he can do boyish, and blabby, and pensively sad very well, more complex nuances of emotions are hit and miss. But oh boy, he is already excellent at devastated. And quietly angsty. And messed-up. Yum.

Also, episode eight made me cry so hard I couldn’t see very well. Yup, it’s a Korean dorama alright.

I have checked out the beginning of the first episode of Magic Ring (less than 10 minutes actually). The subs are nothing to write home about, but I get the gist of their conversations from it, so it's good. I am also pleased to announce that Joe Cheng and the leading lady mack on each other during opening credits something fierce. I fail to see the downside of that. (Though I am confused as to why JC is wearing a tunic).

So, my thoughts? Here they are. Joe Cheng? Looks hotter than he did in ISWAK (yes, it's possible). And wears suits! And he is a successful lawyer! Who gets into brawls! And who is viewed as a disappointment by his father! And his brother is his one link to functioning in this family (which considering his bro is about to bit it, sucks for his character but rules for me)! And he has good hair and an adorable smile! This is as far as I got, but it's plenty to keep me invested in more.

But I put it aside because I do want to finish Sang-Doo. Before I watched SD though, I finished the second episode of Smiling Pasta (click on the relevant tag to see the summary and pics). I love it. And not just because it's amazing, delicious, tongue in cheek cractastic thing. It's be cause He Qun (the male lead) is probably the sweetest, nicest leading male character I've seen in a dorama, and one of the really rare ones who it would be cool to date in RL. He is just a good guy. The scene with Xiao Shi and how she has to wear the turtle shell (because she was the slowest in thr annual school race) and he tries to get them out of making her wear it because there are a lot of people around? COOL. The thing is, he is not in love with her. He doesn't know her very well even. She is a random girl who's been thrown into his path. But he is still so nice. But the moment I really fell for him was when she puts the shell on (because he and Ah Zhe are going on hammer and tongs) and she starts wobblng off and she trips and falls and her shoes flies off into the rafters and everyone is laughing and he pushes Vincent (his PR guy) aside and ignoring everyone calling for him (or for him to stop) determinitely climbs up andgets her shoe for her and then comes back and puts it on her foot. And then he picks up her hand and walks off with her.

I love him.

The whole thing with the fact that he's had to transfer to the same college as his estranged, bad boy rocker brother. Who stole his gf but who himself was in love with a girl for whose death he blames He Qun and who is himself the object of Xiao Shi's affections *phew*. And that he is an idol singer AND the elder son of the leader of Parliament who is a disappointment to his father. And the fact that he gets 'engaged' to XS to save his reputation? And etc etc etc? I love it.

Oh, how much do I love It Started with a Kiss ep 19? I have no words!

spoilers through beginning of 19 )

For those of you who wanted to see if the subs of Magic Ring were any good before getting it (all two of you :P), I've got it today and checked the subs and from what I can see, while no miracles of grammar, they appear to be OK. So if you want to see Joe Cheng angst, get to it! I put in some random scene in some random disc, and yup, angst.

And speaking of doramas and angst, I am almost done with It Started with a Kiss. Which dorama should I watch next? I am tending towards Sang-Do, Let's Go to School but I do have other choices. So, poll!

Finished Tokyo Juliet ep 12. All I have to say is that I want to stab the bra guy in the eye with a fork.

I checked the cover of my shipped Magic Ring DVD and GLEEEST GLEE THAT EVER GLEED. The English summary on the back is comprehensible! This is usually a good hint the subs will at least make sense (you should see the scary summaries on backs of ISWAK and Goong). YAY. Am a bit closer to angsty angsty Joe Cheng (though if it turns into Love Contract Mark 2, I will scream. I watched LC after DBY because I wanted to see Mike He angst and ended up bawling for hours). Am amused that the front refers to it as 'fetish' serial. I know they mean 'popular' but a girl can dream, no? Mmmm, Joe Cheng and chains. Hmmmm. pics of DVD cover, front and back )

I have also watched more It Started with a Kiss. Ep 14 (the Christmas episode) makes living worthwhile. Honest. You think I am joking?

I'll provide room and board and they will have to sit there with me and translate the dorama Magic Ring. I found that only one ep of this was ever subbed. *sob sob sob*

The plot seems to be precisely written to appeal to me: Synopsis full of angsty lovers, dysfunctional families and amnesia )

Come on! It's as if the writers sat around going "OK, let's see what will appeal to [livejournal.com profile] dangermousie. Oh, yeah. Let's put this in too. This will also appeal. And how about this? Yeah, that will also be her thing."

In addition, it stars Joe Cheng (the male lead from It Started With a Kiss on whom I am crushing madly.)

And it looks insanely pretty and with gorgeous filters:

More prettiness behind cut )

Why is it unsubbed except for first ep? Whyyyyyyy?
