Since Powerful Opponents made me think about drama endings. Now, we all know about those infamous ‘last minute unhappy endings’ which seem to be tacked on to inflict utmost misery (Glass Slippers’ infamous ending, I am looking at you) or those dramas which would pretty clearly end happily as are giggle-fest or unhappily, as they involve hot people with terminal illnesses.

But how about that rare yet delightful category of dramas: surprising happy endings. Not ones that could have gone either way (Smile Again, QSS) but ones you did not expect at all. Behind the cut are Dangermousie’s Top Dozen Most Surprising Happy Endings.

Am through episode 19 of Green Rose which continues to be very good. I especially loved otp spoiler )

I decided to take a little break from that drama then because I can't marathon without a break and, in interests of clearing my drama slate, I continued my watch of Love Story in Harvard. Finished ep 5. The law stuff in it makes my head hurt more even than the English, I am not super keen on the leading lady (she is OK but she doesn't make me love her like most of kdrama heroines do) and at least so far, it's a bit too fluffy, but:

1. Kim Rae Won is full of adorable. He is so full of adorable, he covers the rest of the cast. And Hyon-Woo is one of those rare well-adjusted laid-back, fun guys you see so rarely as protagonists in drama. He'd actually be someone fun to date in RL.

2. KISSING. OMG, the first kiss ('touchdown!') was the most adorable kdrama first kiss ever. And the way they kiss in the bathroom and giggle and everything and she is all 'I need to brush teeth first' is...so cute. They arean incredibly functional OTP. (Though girl, if KRW is opening his mouth to kiss you, at least pretend to open yours, don't hold your lips together so tightly, it looks weird).

Anyhow, once I am done with GR, my drama slate is confusing.

Should I:

1. Rewatch Goong or My Girl, one of dramas I adore
2. Watch a wuxia drama
3. Watch a Lee Dong Gun drama
4. Watch Lovers.

Heeeeelp :) (And I am not even mentioning the other ones I have).

First off, a few questions about some of the lesser known dramas out there. First off, Takki’s Antique. Yay or nay? Any good?

Second, I don’t think anyone on my flist except [livejournal.com profile] tatterpunk has seen the jdrama Brand, but it doesn’t hurt to ask. Happy ending or not?

Third, I got my DVDs of Say You Love Me kdrama in. I got it mainly because I have KRW fever, but also its ‘Dangerous Liasons’ type storyline appeals to me. Basically, Evil Woman (EW) is a successful but ruthless producer who doesn’t really feel. Her bf, Evil Guy (EG) is totally her lapdog. Into their lives enter our OTP, played by KRW and New Lady (NL). They are young and sweet and in love and they’ve known each other since childhood and they are horribly pure. So EW can’t bear the purity/goodness stuff, so she gets EG to try to take NL away from KRW and to seduce KRW herself. And she succeeds! At one point she apparently backs poor KRW into a corner and traps him and forces herself on him…heh. Poor guy. His first time too ;P Angst and angst and angst follows as his NL is clearly not happy and leaves him for good. But never fear, I peeked. Happy ending ;) Anyway, I am a sick girl, but I am too lazy to ff and I won’t get to the drama itself properly for a while. Any idea which ep the scene of KRW and EW happens? Please :P

I am really enjoying Love Story in Harvard. Interestingly, the development of the love story itself seems very realistic. They go on dates (some good some not) and talk and hang out and slowly get to know each other and fall for each other. Yay. And I loved the football scene SO MUCH. So playful and awesome and so perfect that Hyon-Woo finds out why Soo-In missed their earlier date (he was incredibly mad about it and told her so) and she did have a good reason, and he feels so sorry and he finally finds her and I love how he doesn’t apologize (because to do so would imply that he knows something she doesn’t want him to, even if he did learn it by accident, and also bring back bad memories for her) but is just sweet and adorable to her instead, teaching her how to throw a football, and she is puzzled but delighted and soon he actually makes her laugh. LOVE.

Btw, Kim Tae Hee, the female lead in this one, is Lee Wan’s sister in RL. How odd is that. I like her but the problem is I absolutely adore KRW in this one, so I am always puzzled that she doesn’t just swoon into his arms ;)

Also, unrelated I just found out that there will be a movie version of the Hwan Jini story coming out (with the same title). Hang Jini is apparently a legendary courtesan and so it will be a period movie. EEEE! Song Hye Kyo (female lead in Full House, I love her) is playing Jini. GUUUUUH. There is supposedly a bed scene with SHK (no idea who the partner is) *shocking :D* and it’s a period movie which is general awesomeness, so yeah. I am there ;)

Since Love Story in Harvard appears, while angsty at times and uber-romantic, to be an upbeat drama overall, I am considering which angsty one to watch next after the current batch. I am alternating Taiyou No Kisetsu (most likely winner, as I planned to watch it forever plus Takki!) or newly arrived Something Happened in Bali otherwise known as spoiler for the end )

I have watched more of Love Story in Harvard and all I can say is their grasp of law school is quite wonky: Hyon-Woo is taking a contracts class but needs help (and thus hires Soo-In) for a malpractice case for it, which is a torts subject if anything, and then speaks up and wins his Prof’s respect (and thanks Soo-In for helping with the answer) with a constructive discharge question which is either employment or labor law. WTF? Ehhh, whatever. KRW looks so adorable once he finally wins through that I don’t care and the only coherent thought left in my head is ‘I’ll tutor you, KRW! I might not be a minisetring to AIDS patients Korean beauty, but I’ll do it for free!’ :P

Oh, and found this pic from some upcoming ep of Witch Yoo Hee:

and it’s cute and all but I cannot concentrate as it’s the exact jacket Jae Hee wore in Delightful Girl Chun0Hyang in the bus stop scene (don’t want to be spoilery but it’s one of my fave scenes ever) so my brain just goes into DGCH nostalgia mode!

And last but not least, I am incredibly excited. Apparently, not only is there a sub group forming to sub Mike He's Marry Me but the awesome DoReMi fansubs have picked up *hyperventilates* Vic Zhou's Love Storm for subbing. Vic is my favorite drama actor hands down and I wanted to see LS for ages. I even own the unsubbed DVDs and watched bits but OMG OMG OMG subs. Yeah, the plot might be 'love traingle' or what not and he's gotten better between then and Mars but I don't care. Because he looks GORGEOUS and he protects the heroine with his own body when the bad guy shoots the gun and there is hurt/comfort and happy endings and awesomeness.

YES.

And to add on another awesome note? Short preview for Bambino, Matsumoto Jun's new upcoming drama!

I marathonned first two eps of Love Story in Harvard.

I guess I have my new marathonning drama after all.

It is SO AWESOME.

(They did film in Boston a lot btw)

I really really like Hyon-Woo (Kim Rae Won's character). He is laid-back and funny and intelligent and it's totally hard for him, all the studying in the law school. And he has floppy hair and glasses and an irresistable grin. KRW's English is very strongly accented, but I can understand him, and he's supposed to have flown directly from Korea, so I have no problem with the fact. And hey, it's way better than my Korean :) The English of the guy who plays Alex Hong makes me roll my eyes though because he is supposed to have been living in the US since he was a small child.

Their concept of law school and law practice in the US and similar is a rather loose (and I am still trying to figure out why Hyon-Woo wants to study law in the US if he plans to practice in Korea, as Korea is a civil law country), but not too much more than on an American show, and certainly a lot more close than any American show would get to stuff in Korea.

Anyway, this is awesome. I totally dislike the other guy, btw, Alex Hong. And he hasn't even put any moves on the heroine yet. It's just he is so teachers' pet and show-off and everything is totally easy for him, and he knows how to play the system. While I sorta want to huggle Hyon-Woo, who is on the bad side of his Prof and is trying to do the best he can and actually putting effort into stuff. I am just thinking if I was in a class with Alex, I'd strangle him :D There is some inadverstently slashy stuff which is cute though :)

Now to the important part of any kdrama: the love story. It's great. KRW and the actress who plays Soo-In have awesome chemistry, warm and teasing. And I love LOVE Soo-In. She is totally an independent strong woman: she is studying medicine and she is funny and tongue in cheek and OMG OMG when KRW mistakes her (long story but it's understandable) for a call girl and she perpetuates it by offering to go to a motel room with him for $100? LOL.

There is a lot more laid-back joking about sexuality here btw. Maybe because they are a bit older than some of kdrama couples? Mid twenties? And I love it when he pays her to help him study a malpractice case (not something you'd do as a first year but whatever) and ends up asking her all sorts of personal questions and making her noodles? TO DIE FOR.

This is awesome.

As far as angsty love story of rich law-studying boy and poor but smart-mouthed girl? This is way better than the Ali McGraw/Ryan O'Neal Harvard tearjerker.

And not just because we get a SHOWER SCENE about ten minutes into the first ep and whoa baby. Wet, almost naked Kim Rae Won? Who has clearly has been working out a hell of a lot? He's so cut you can contemplate geometrical patterns on his torso. Yummy ones. They should put that on Harvard Law brochures.

But please please PLEASE tell me she doesn't die at the end. It doesn't look too angsolicious but it's kdrama.

Snow Queen. I have just finished ep 5 and starting with ep 6 my DVD subs went wonky. Boooo. So the choice is either to watch DVDs with crappy subs or dl with excellent ones. So I dled. Not fond of it but oh well. I am definitely getting the YA DVDs when they release but no way can I wait that long to continue.

spoilers through ep 5 )

Hmmmm. In other ‘upcoming drama’ news, I am mildly interested in the kdrama Thank You which started today. Not as much as in the other three that start in March: The Devil, Que Sera Sera, and Hello Baby/Hello Miss, but still. The plot involves a pricky surgeon and a single mother whose child has AIDS because of a blood transfusion. It’s being subbed, too. Hmmm. I might check it out, though not too sure…I’ve seen the female lead before and liked her and I am always fond of doctor protagonists ;)

Oh, and how could I forget? Have I mentioned that the fact that there is a kdrama, namely Love Story in Harvard which is a totally typical kdrama in every other respect: love quadrangles, angst, rich people, weeping but it is set in Harvard makes me glee with the glee-est of glee? I have no desire to see it (because WTF factor is not enough to eat up 16+ hours of my time) but just the thought of it existing makes the world a better place.

And last but not least, the first ep of The Devil has aired and people are going nuts: that thread is moving psycho fast, with people posting ‘as you watch liveblogging spoilers’ (I started clicking and then had to force self to stop) and screencaps and eeeee. It’s an awesome feeding frenzy in there. And yes, there is a serial killer in the story. *meep*
