I had half an hour to waste and a copy of Haru: An Unforgettable Day in Korea, the half-an-hour promotional short done by the tourism ministry to promote tourism.

Ummmmm.

So, let's see what will happen to you if you come to Korea )

This was most bizarre pointless tourism promotion ever. Seriously. There was barely any scenery. Unless they are implying that if you come to Korea you get to pal around with Hallyu stars, which I doubt.

Apparently at one point Giordano (I think it's a jeans company?) decided it had too much money lying arounf and made a serious of commercials with Jeon Ji Hyun and Jung Woo Sung.

They are ridiculously gorgeous.

With Jang Dong Gun:

I nearly had a heart attack when I read that So Ji Sub entered army training (didn't he just get back from the army!!!) but it turned out he's just doing a refresher for upcoming Road No. 1. Phew, don't scare me so, dramabeans - I can't deal with this. I am so looking forward to Road N.1 though - SJS and Kim Ha Neul, with Choi Min Soo as well, and the writer of Dog/Wolf and director of Dog/Wolf and La Dolce Vita. "Oh my God!" sums up my reaction. What with that, Chuno, Dong Yi, and Jejoongwon, 2009 will hopefully be a hell of a year for historical dramas.

I have to say, the thing about Korean army is at least it's only 2/3 years. And it's not so bad for me because most of my favorite kdrama guys have completed their army thing already, some a really long time ago - one of the advantages of going for the older ones :)

Also, Gong Yoo and Chun Jung Myung just got out! Please don't let them take as long as So Ji Sub or Go Soo to pick a project!

I have only a few favorites who are either still in the army (Lee Dong Wook, Joo Ji Hoon, Eric, Lee Jin Wook) or will go really soon probably (Hyun Bin, Lee Junki). But it's gotta suck if you are a younger man fan - every day must be (as someone on my flist pointed out) like Elvis enlisting :P

On the plus side, they all come out with amazing muscles.

I am so going to rend my garments and wail "Oppa!" when Hyun Bin goes in.

1. Mr. Mousie recently ordered tourist materials from Korean Tourism Ministry (all you have to do is request it on a website) and I have been reading them. (a) They make me hungry - the food described sounds yummy, though if one was a vegetarian, he would starve (b) They were describing a particular mountain range and I was reading along going "hmmm, I am not super-outdoorsey but it sounds pret...it is in North Korea!!!" I think I will be skipping that one; and (c) They had a section on Hallyu-related sights. They won my undying approval by putting a picture of Bae Yong Joon in Legend i.e. dangermousie's favorite drama ever. Hmmmm, I think we just might find ourselves at the still-there-with-sets site of the filming. Us and a million Japanese adjummas.

2. We were in a bookstore today where I walked by "Robert Pattison: Fated For Fame." Yes. Indeed.

3. I got volume 2 of Otomen yesterday - I think one of the things I love the most about it is that the main character is such a decent guy. Manga heroes are often immature or bad boys - it's nice to see one who is just a good guy.

4. Fell prey to two more mangas today: Love Attack and Rasetsu. Both look good. (there was also another manga by Matsuri Hino, about a guy who is cursed to follow orders of this particular girl, a fact which neither of them likes since she'd rather he was in love with her - but after Vampire Knight becoming trainwreck of weirdness, I was staying away).

Love Attack plot: Chiemi Yusa's high-school record is far from perfect. She's already been suspended twice for fighting, and she's not even half-way through her first year! In danger of getting expelled for starting yet another brawl, her teacher approaches her with an unexpected offer: get her classmate Akifumi "Deranged Devil" Hirata, the nastiest fighter in the whole school, to clean up his act, and her record will officially be cleared. Reluctantly she accepts, and immediately goes on the attack. But as she's waiting for him to retaliate, she discovers that he has more in store for her than just a fight! From the creator of Girl Got Game and Heaven!! comes a rollicking brawl of a good time as the roughest guy and girl in school get themselves into trouble--and find themselves in love.

I have started reading this and it's hilarious and I love both leads.

Rasetsu plot: Rasetsu is in a job of a ghost/demon hunter. Problem is, one demon marked her with a curse - if she does not find true love by age 20, he will come and get her. Well, maybe it will help that Yako Hoshino, a young man with spiritual powers of his own, comes to the agency seeking help. Rasetsu bears a striking resemblance to his old love Yurara - yup, it's a Yurara spin-off.

Yes, I mock for I am bitter. Joo Ji Hoon, one of my favorite kdrama actors, has been tried for drug use, with prosecutors demanding a year in jail for him. He'll probably get it. Seeing how pretty he is, he will probably not fare too well.

GRRRR. I am bitter. He is one of my all-time favorites and will now not have any career anywhere ever. GRRR.

I clothe my bitterness in sparkles.

In sparkly news of a different sort:

"Having girly hobbies doesn't make you less MANLY" Ahahahahahaaaa!

Today, acting totally on impulse, I bought first volume of a manga called Otomen. It sounded too hilarious not to. No summary I can give is going to be better than the summary from the cover, so here it is:

Asuka Masamune is a guy who loves girly things--sewing, knitting, making cute stuffed animals and reading shojo comics. But in a world where boys are expected to act manly, Asuka must hide his beloved hobbies and play the part of a masculine jock instead. Ryo Miyakozuka, on the other hand, is a girl who can't sew or bake a cake to save her life. Asuka finds himself drawn to Ryo, but she likes only the manliest of men! Can Asuka ever show his true self to anyone, much less to the girl he's falling for?

LOL.

Seriously. LOL.

Now, in real life, I like my men pretty darn manly, but for manga purposes, this is comedy gold.

Also, I went browsing because I thought this would make a fun anime and found out that a live-action jdrama version of this is coming in August. Heee. I will be sure to check it out.

Yes. I have completed my descent: I have watched an episode of a Korean variety show, We Got Married.

Blame Kim Hyun Joong (currently playing Ji Hoo in Boys Over Flowers and the leader of the pop band SS501) and my growing fixation interest in him.

WGM has a uniquely Korean set-up. I cannot imagine a US show like that at all. It takes a number of (single) male and female celebrities, matches them at random and has them 'pretend' to be a married couple - i.e. do things married couples normally do - go grocery shopping, go on trips, decorate a house etc. Sort of playact at marriage but in their real personas. Gladdening many a RPShipper's heart in the process, I am sure.

The reason I watched it? Kim Hyun Joong appeared on the show for a number of episodes (the couples keep coming and being replaced) 'starring' opposing Hwangbo, another musician.

I watched one ep so far (or at least only KHJ parts - not interested in the other 'couples'). Heee. HEEEEE. LOL. It's guaranteed to make you LOL and cheer you up (I was rather down yesterday). Also, now I can see why he was cast as Ji Hoo. I wondered about that. True, he is gorgeous, but so are a lot of Korean actors. But now I see - it's pretty close to his real-life personality (or at least the way he comes across in the media, as who knows what his true personality is like). Such an oddball! My favorite moment? They go on a 'romantic' fishing trip and he lugs a whole bunch of manhwa with him because it might get boring. Methinks I found a soulmate - I always have a book with me just in case :)

Ungallant about his match (and looking scarily like Yamapi):

Isn't it what Ji Hoo would wear?

When asked by Hwangbo how old does he think she is? (She is 6 years older). Ahahahahahaa!

This was my favorite. I loled so hard I think I almost woke the baby.

So? My verdict? Not something I will marathon or anything, but I do plan slowly but steadily to watch all of KHJ eps. Yeah, I am hopeless. Sorry! It's funny - he doesn't really send my hormones into overdrive, the way Lee Min Ho can do am going to hell, but I do adore him - more in an eccentric/amusing/pretty/adorable/funny younger brother way.
