I confess that when I checked out ATDP, I didn't expect to love it, yet here I am, 5 episodes in, loving it so much. So much.

Despite the rather melodramatic premise, ATDP feels very real - it is not OTT or loud, but feels like a peek into lives of real people, people I could pass by on the street (OK, they are prettier and more eloquent than I am but still...) In fact, the drama ATDP reminds me most of isn't any of its fellow melodramas but Worlds Within, a decidedly unmelodramatic drama - it has the same feel of every day, of a mood piece that is somehow real.

The characters, most of them, are not perfect people, but the writing and the acting makes me care for them and understand them even when they do things I would normally disapprove of. I mean, in ATDP, I am rooting for a couple who are sleeping together even though the man is engaged (and the woman knows he is). But Soo Ae's fierce independence and her equally fierce vulnerability speak to me. And Kim Rae Won is perfectly cast because somehow, I don't see his character as either weak or despicable, but someone I understand and care for. When he incoherently sobs out to his friend, desperate for Soo Ae to know that the reason he didn't break off the engagement and marry her was because he was being too dutiful to his parents (who are pretty awful, happily selling their son in exchange for staying in a comfortable groove, even though they know he wants out, but it's realistic), not because he didn't love her enough - I believe him. And that takes a lot of acting and writing brilliance to do.

Another thing I love about this drama is the looping narrative structure - the story is linked by the lovers' memories - jumping from the bleak present to their shared past (the sequence after KRW learns about Soo Ae's illness and flashbacks to the start of their relationship, and then it flashbacks out, and he is crying, and then it moves to a different part of their past, is especially brilliant). It really echoes the theme of identity and memory. And it also allows the writer a lot of freedom - after all, our couple broke up in episode 1, and yet we still get plenty of them together through that looping structure...

Oh, and there is the fact that family is as, if not more, important to the story than romantic love...ATDP is pretty much pitch perfect.

Ji Ho is back for revenge and I confess I gleed and gleed as he starts destroying Momster and In Ha. It's easy to win over someone who plays by the rules when you do not, and loves you when you hate him, but now they are even in feeling and disregard for rules, and I love seeing the bad guys pwned. Also, I love Ji Ho/Dami's interactions - full of pain but also chemistry. Oh, and JJH is rocking the role.

And it's official - I am in love with A Thousand Days' Promise. It's hitting all my kinks.

We have battened down our hatches for Hurricane Sandy - both Mr. Mousie and I have had our work close tomorrow and Baby Mousie's preschool is shut as well. Me being me, that means I need to pass the suddenly-freed time with a drama, preferably one I can binge on, as opposed to waiting for a slow slow drip of weekly eps.

We get this in the first five minutes of A Thousand Day Promise:

Whoa.

As you can tell, I started ATDP properly. I was delaying due to mixed reviews but finally curiousity won out (plus, you have a lot of time when you are minding a sick, sleeping child).

So far, one episode in, I really love it. But then, I tend to love dark melodramas, stories with damaged and damaging protagonists. Neither Kim Rae Won nor Su Ae portray good people but I cannot help but be drawn into their destructive world, their fractured story. KRW is excellent as always and, I think, this is finally a drama where I get the fuss about Su Ae. She left me cold in everything else I've seen her in but I love her performance in this.

I was going to watch Man of Honor once Baby Mousie went to bed but I saw that A Thousand Day Promise has just started!!!!!!! Yes, I realize, that the first ep is only available raw and I don't care!

Kim Rae Won is back! In a romantic melodrama! I adore those and they have become so infrequent as of late (the closest we got all year was Miss Ripley and it really wasn't one). I want angst! KRW breaks so beautifully (just watch the drama my icon is from for proof). And this is a story about a woman who is slowly losing her memory of everything, including the man she loves.

Plus, maybe it's a chance for me to finally like Su Ae!

Trailer, together with shirt-ripping:

Sorry, Man of Honor, Gumiho Girlfriend, Family Honor, A Thousand Kisses, The Holy Pearl, Tree with Deep Roots and Ikemen Desu Ne, you all have to wait!

Three of Mousie's favorite leading men all have upcoming dramas and, more excitingly, all three of those dramas sound amazing!!!!

1. As per Dramabeans, Jang Geun Seok has been cast by PD Yoon Suk Ho in his upcoming romantic drama Love Rides the Rain. JGS will play not one but two (!!!!!) leading men, separated by a generation. OMGOMGOMGOMG. For those who do not recognize his name, PD YSH is the man who brought us the biggest, emoest, most gorgeous Hallyu hits i.e. the Four Seasons dramas. They have their detractors but I loved Winter Sonata and Spring Waltz is one of my all-time favorites (have not seen Summer Scent, loved what I saw of Autumn Tale but the misery-filled ending made me wary of continuing). If this was announced this time last year, I would have been a little disappointed because of my lack of interest in JGS, but I confess Mary Stayed Out Last Night made me a hopeless fangirl. So JGS! In a likely gorgeous and romantic drama directed by a hit-making, awesome PD? Bring it on!

At the risk of turning into one of those fans, a small and ridiculous part of me is ridiculously hoping for Moon Geun Young to be cast as one of the leading ladies. Time to rewatch Mary, I believe.

2. As per Koalasplayground, Jung Woo Sung is also back - he is set to be the lead of Noh Hee Kyung's Padam Padam opposite Han Ji Min. *cosmic scream* I adore Jung Woo Sung to an unhealthy degree (Koala, if you are reading, he's yours, he's yours, I would not dare to fight Koala claws :P) Noh Hee Kyung penned my favorite kdrama of all time, Worlds Within, and I adore Han Ji Min (Capital Scandal, Resurrection, Cain & Abel) with a ridiculous degree of love. Plus, as Koala noted, the height difference is going to be mmmmmmmmm. I am extra-excited because JWS almost never makes dramas. His only drama in the last 15 (!!!!) years was the horrible disaster that was Athena (I curse your name, drama!). So EEEEEEE!!!!!!

3. As per pretty much everywhere in the drama world, Kim Rae Won is about to be discharged from his military service and is set to star opposite Su Ae (who I have yet to love in anything, but I remain eternally optimistic) in Thousand Day Promise, a romantic melodrama by Kim Soo Hyun (Life is Beautiful) about a man faced with the fact that the woman he loves is slowly forgetting him. Think A Moment to Remember or The Notebook and get out the tissues (I am going to ignore the fact that even early-onset Alzheimer's is still decades too old for Su Ae). Eeeee! Kim! Rae! Won! is back.

I bailed after ep 12 of MSOAN but I did read recaps and liveblogs of it through to the end. Oh my, the writer must have had some really really good drugs. It's a pity because it had a lovely cast and the first half had a delicious, quirky, off-beat vibe. I really do wish they stuck with the first writer, despite her flaws.

Sadly, this means I am finally adding both the Geuns to my small list of "red flag when they star in the drama" actors (others on that list include Lee Min Ho** and Kim Rae Won*) - all the actors on that list do good work but seem to have a horrendous taste in picking dramas. MGY, first Painter of the Wind, then Cinderella Unni, now this? Three strikes, you are out. She is a versatile actress but her drama taste is not mine. Jang Geun Seok? I don't know who picks your projects, but fire him. My dislike of YAB is well-known, BV was a dead bore, and MSOAN was the messiest mess that ever lived. (Hong Gil Dong I do adore but I thought he was wooden as a plank in that one - I did not care for either his character or his acting in that one). I think he has oodles of on-screen charisma and plenty of potential but the roles he picks - oy!

* KRW is a perfect example - I adore him and most of his dramas are hits but I can't stand any of them, except for Which Star Are You From which I do love.

** Oh, Lee Min Ho. You are hot and charismatic and have lovely acting chops. How I wish you were in something decent for once, but given your track record, I am preemptively skipping City Hunter for my own sanity and blood pressure.

I rather adore the OTP of the Kim Rae Won and Jung Ryo Won starrer Which Star Are You From (there is a reason this drama made it on my fave kdrama list). They are angsty but functional and fun. And with so much chemistry. She is a lookalike younger sister of his dead girlfriend, who couldn't be more different, and he can't help but fall for her...

I could picspam a lot - I adore his love confession at the end of ep 10/11, with dramatic running, and hugging, and cuteness and angst - it's both awwww-inducing and hilarious. But, the one ep I currently have on my HD is ep 8 which is just as well - it's unspoilery.
