Aaaand, I am finally out!

I lasted for 12 episodes of its increasingly brain-dead plot, motivated solely by Kim Jae Won and his adorable faces and the hope of cuteness that would ensue when he and Han Ji Hye's character got together.

But as of this week, TPTB decided to be kind and free up some of my short time - HJH and Jae Hee's character confirmed their love with smoochies and love making, thus bringing to my attention two things:

(1) we are on episode 14 and there is still no KJW/HJH ship and HJH is in love with Jae Hee. Even if Han Ji Hye ends up with Kim Jae Won, I would have still wasted my time spending most of the drama with the couple that doesn't interest me, even if they won't be the endgame. No thank you.

(2) I know kdrama laws. If a couple sleeps together, it's pretty unusual for them not to end up together. Not to mention that in dramas, even if synopsis says X ends up with Y, it can change and X may end up with Z due to the popularity of the latter pairing. Otherwise known as Park Shi Hoo principle demonstrated in such dramas as East of Eden, Beautiful Days, that recent Sung Yuri Jeju drama, and, of course, half of Park Shi Hoo's ouvre. This is especially in dramas whose two male leads are of equal star power. So basically, there is a good chance that HJH will end up with Jae Hee and I would have sat up through this hamster-plotted drama for nothing.

So basically, I am done. Sorry, Kim Jae Won, I promise to watch you elsewhere!

I swear I feel unfortunate brain cells die every time I watch another episode of May Queen.

Yet, as long as Kim Jae Won is in it, being his irresistible, wry, angsty, charming self, I am stuck!

Basically, as long as the drama gives me this, I am sticking around )

It is a genuine mystery to me what Han Ji Hye sees in the unattractively woeful and issue-full Jae Hee, with his lack of progress past hand-holding in 15 years and with his homicidal father who likes to abuse her, when she has amazing KJW there. I mean, that whole scene where KJW finds out HJH/JH dated for 15 years and her reaction to his asking her if she was blind and didn't realize he, KJW, liked her (which is 'lalalalala I won't take it seriously'), made me shake my head and wonder if she and Jae Hee aren't best matched after all, as matching victims of brain damage.

Blah.

Curse you, Kim Jae Won, and your incredible charm! If it wasn't for you, I'd dump this thing so fast my head would spin!

I believe in working my way up, so let's start with the bad. WTF, eps 11-12 of TTBY? How is it possible for my cute fluffy drama to go so boring? The fact that these eps focused mainly on the secondaries is a big big problem. I just don't find Eun Gyul either cute or compelling (I know, I know, minority of one) and why they thought spending a lot of time on Hana or Tae Joon/Hana would be of interest to anyone is one of the world's big mysteries. On the plus side, all that fast-forwarding saved me a lot of time so yay?

Worth checking out solely for this:

More plot-relevant caps )

Now, on to the mediocre, namely May Queen. I am in with this for the long haul (once again, with plentiful strategic fastforwarding) because I love the actors of the main trio and their chemistry and interactions are compelling, but my impression that this drama is written by brain-dead hamsters on a tight deadline has not lessened (why is this getting better ratings than the vastly superior Five Fingers again?) The way the whole 'is she my daughter? nope, probably not' thing is handled in this ep would have made my eyes fall out of my sockets if I felt invested enough in the ludicrous birthplot to care. I am beginning to believe pretty much every character in this except for the trio, In Hwa, and the uncle and aunt have cement for brains. This said, HJH is a darling, Jae Hee is doing his best in a role that is not making me ship him with HJH (grow a spine, dude! Go Oedipal on Daddy!) and the whole thing is worth watching for the marvelous faces Kim Jae Won makes. Why so darling, KJW! The drama gets about 50x better any time he is on-screen and he and HHJ have lovely chemistry. Can we ditch the rest of the waterlogged plot and just concentrate on them shipbuilding and enacting the most adorable revenge on everyone? Or something. I mean, who could say no to this face:

Some caps )

And now on to the good - episode 4 of Nice Guy. Even cranky and sick me was not immune to how good this was. One of the things I love about this drama is that scenes are given room to breathe, characters (incredibly complex and fascinating) are given room to develop and process...

More thoughts and a ton of caps )

And that's it for today, folks!

I confess I almost dumped May Queen due to the utter makjang stupidity of the first 8 eps (and seeing that's me, that's saying a lot). Luckily, this week we finally got the adult cast and so MQ is staying on, for now - the plot is still done by monkeys with brain damage and passion for melodrama, but the individual scenes sparkle (especially every time the irreverent Kang San shows up) and the cast chemistry is whoa.

My problem is I ship our heroine with both Chang Hee (Jae Hee) and Kang San (Kim Jae Won) - threesome, please!

Some caps of shippy cuteness and hotness because the less I talk about the plot, the better )

I finally had time (and subs) to check out the last two of the new drama offerings - the weekend dramas May Queen and Five Fingers. Both feature convoluted family trees, abandoned children, evil parental figures, revenge, and appallingly spoiled children who grow up to be obnoxious secondaries - I think the secondary girl from MQ and secondary boy from FF are a match made in heaven. Or, more likely, the other place.

MQ reminds me of a lighter Giant or East of Eden (way way lighter EoE whose childhood portions, the best of the drama, were harrowing). Or possibly Can You Hear My Heart. The interesting point about it is that this time the protagonist of the business/revenge drama is a woman. I surprised myself by thoroughly enjoying the first episode even though it was only child actors (OTOH, I've heard the first 8 eps are child actors and no, thank you. I know it's a long drama, but it's way too long for my tastes - a couple of eps, or even 4-5). I love our protagonist and I really like the kid who is going to grow up to be Kim Jae Won. I like the kid who is going to grow up to be Jae Hee, and feel sorry for him, but the future-KJW character is just adorable. I found out by reading character description that it's KJW who gets the heroine, and I am quite happy, especially since from the description it seems he is a nicer person and yay, for once, the heroine doesn't end up with issue-laden icicle.

Five Fingers makes me think of Baker King, only with pianos instead of pastries. I liked it less than MQ because it was much gloomier - I hated pretty much everyone in it (they are all awful except for Choi Sira who is just put upon and is going to change into a monster and we know it) except for the kid who was going to grow up to be Joo Ji Hoon and the girl who was going to be Eunjung (and the latter character had only a short appearance). If I am going to watch depressing stuff, at least give me shirtless JJH to compensate! Yeah - it's very Baker King-ish, where I liked the set-up and adored the adult parts but largely ffed through the kid parts.

Not related to either of the above, but have this amazing Shi Won/Yoon Jae MV:

1. Joo Won is rumored to be considering the lead role in the drama version of the hit movie about a man who finds out his girlfriend was a secret agent (after they break up and he becomes one himself). I am...torn. On one hand, more Joo Won in a drama is always a good thing. On the other, this would air barely a month after Bridal Mask ends, and since they will start filming before airing, this means no rest for him. Plus, Kim Nam Gil and Lee Dong Gun turned down the lead role, so I am wondering if there are problems - the makers are people behind Chuno, one of my all-time favorite dramas, but also behind Runaway - Plan B, one of the most useless monstrocities to ever grace dramaland. People's suggestions for female leads drive me insane as well - Son Ye Jin? Kim Tae Hee? I am not a big fan of the former, but more to the point, she looks almost old enough to be his mom and it's not that sort of a story. I love Kim Tae Hee, who has great chemistry with her co-stars despite her limited acting prowess, but once again, she's rather too old. I want an age-appropriate pairing, please.

2. Posters for May Queen are out and I want!!!

It's like my dream cast, pretty much. Though how they expect to resolve the romantic rivalry between Jae Hee and Kim Jae Won, whom I adore equally and who have equal leading man status, I have no idea. Never has the word 'threesome' been more appropriate.

3. Posters are out for Five Fingers as well. My favorite is this, because it looks like Joo Ji Hoon and Eunjung are about to do something X-rated on the piano as soon as the photoshoot is over...

The women look amazing but the men are saddled with odd clothes and hairstyles. Still, I don't care. Because Joo Ji Hoon!!!

4. This amazing general Bridal Mask MV is probably my favorite yet. Spoilers for all the eps.
