I have a confession to make - I have mainlined three episodes of the cable drama The Empress (bringing total watched eps to 4) and to say I am obsessed would be an understatement. In fact, I am downloading raws expressly to cap (the only subs are streaming on viki), which is always a sure sign of obsession.

Jotei, the jdrama this is (somewhat loosely) based on, was a drama that made me horrifiedly amused (or is it amusedly horrified?) at its badness. But The Empress kept everything that had potential in Jotei (poor girl driven into prostitution and revenge, call-girl rivalry, horrid rich people who need to be brought down, thug with a heart of gold) and jettisoned everything that didn't - the horrifying 'acting,' the characters' unrealistic youth and bizarre behavior.

Our heroine, In Hwa, is a lot more reluctant than was Kato Rosa's version (she manages both spine and fragility and always seems one step short of deciding it all isn't worth it and killing herself - significantly, when she thanks Hyuk for all the things he's done for her, keeping her from killing herself is one action she skips). And at least for now, four eps in, she is not scheming to sell her virginity like the heroine of Jotei, but tries to do it (to have her debts paid) and ultimately cannot. Sure, she can be bitchy and go for the jugular, but you always sense the fragility beneath.

But the biggest character change is our hero. In Jotei (played by the awesome but miscast Matsuda Shota, who was also the only person in the cast who bothered to act), Naoto was a small-time gangster who lured gals into the flesh trade and who fell for our heroine when she fought off his rape attempts by telling him she must keep her virginity because she wants to sell it (yes, you read that correctly). I am not sure how that translates to epic OTP (or even any sane characters), and thankfully, the kdrama writers decided to jettison that entirely. In the Korean version, Hyuk, our hero, is a thug with the saddest eyes in the world (and the sexiest thing I've seen in a good long time. My hormones go insane), who doesn't want to follow his father's footsteps and join the Mob, but does so in order to get enough money to pay off In Hwa's debt so she could leave the brothel (because this drama is ANGSTY, she doesn't know that, and also gets her debts paid off by rich old creep minutes before he shows off with the money. Woe. I know I should not be emotionally involved in a kdrama melodrama - it never ends well - but I cannot help it). He is her knight in tattered armor, rescuing her again again, full of unspoken but utter adoration, but she is too driven and damaged to really do anything about it.

I mean, how can I not love them with scenes like this?

His mob hyungnim decided that spending a night with In Hwa would be a great present so he had drunk-unconscious Hyuk dropped in a hotel and then ordered In Hwa to show up there and spend the night. Of course, there was no sex once Hyuk woke up, but that scene *gibbers*.

Theirs is a rather different dynamic from that in Jotei, but it's pretty much designed to get me obsessed - a damaged gal and a thug who worships the ground she walks is pretty much my dream pairing.

Basically, from crackly crack this has turned into a competently made melodrama and you know how I go for those. It actually makes me think of a much darker, twisted mirror to New Tales of the Gisaeng, or how it could go if Gisaeng wasn't a family drama.

Have a MV from the first half of the series.

Is anyone on my flist is watching this at all? Because if you love melos or stories of dysfunction, you are missing out!

Did you ever watch the trashy, cheesy, irresistible trainwreck that was jdrama Jotei, about a woman desiring to get revenge on those who ruined her life by becoming Japan's top hostess? Did you ever think this was crying for a remake?

Well, fear not! Kdramas are here to help you. Enter The Empress, the Korean remake. It's airing on a cable channel (unsurprising, with that topic), is 13 episodes, and is being subbed on viki.

Surprisingly, I am really enjoying it, one episode in. Sure, it's still as trashy as a Jackie Collins novel on uppers, But it's also ridiculously fun. I also find it much better than the jdrama because, in addition to production values being higher (not much of a feat), they have aged the characters to University age. Imagining high schoolers getting involved in these shenanigans caused my suspension of disbelief cringe and run off whimpering, abandoning me for good.

It also helps that the Korean actress, Jang Shin Yeong, is both prettier than Kato Rosa and is a better actress. Mind you, she is not winning the Baeksang any time soon, but Kato Rosa is pretty much the worst drama actress I've seen, so JSY is a glorious winner in this competition.

Also, Shota's character of devoted thug is played by the above sexy sexy bit of manliness.

I adore Matsuda Shota to bits, but there is no question the Kang Ji Sub makes a much more believable thug. I was always worried Shota would collapse in on himself if he as much as attempted to punch someone.

Because [livejournal.com profile] filmi_girl is so awesome, she brought me a Shahrukh Khan doll from England. *dies*. Which various outfit changes. LOL. Almost as awesome was Mr. Mousie's reaction on seeing it.

I was amused to note that they definitely made his nose much smaller. Now, all I need is a Kajol doll (which they do make) and I can have my own RPF. Or a Hrithik doll (also in existence) and we are set for RPS.

LOL. I am going to take pics of the doll and post them.

I have finished ep 2 of Jotei and I give up. No more Jotei for me. Guys, I have finally found a drama that broke my WTF meter. I never thought it could happen but oh God, I can actively feel myself losing IQ points with every minute I watch this. I am afraid if I continue, my LJ writing will degenerate into 'me see drama, me cry from badness, me mock outfit.'

I spent vast majority of the two eps agog, and with a 'they can't be doing/saying what I think they are? It can't be this ridiculous and bad and WTF, can it? Is this for real?' surreal feel.

Highlights are the 'acting' of our heroine's evil hostess rival, Reiko (I am amazed this had any scenery left considering how the actress chewed it like it was her last meal ever) and our yakuza hero Naoto, nobly supporting and cheering on our heroine to sell her first time to the highest bidder and to in general become best 'oldest profession participant' ever.

So inspiring. Now that's a goal anyone can get behind. Or in front. Or sideways.

Maybe I could buy the love story if every scene with the yakuza guy and the heroine didn't make me laugh and goggle in 'this can't be real?' way simultaneously. But then, to be fair, this is true of everything in this drama.

There was only one serious emotion inspired by this: Matsuda Shota, for the love of God, eat something!!!! You are not even in JE, why are you trying to claim the title of 'skinniest star' from Kame, who finally bulked up to the point I can no longer see his ribs (thank God).

I mean, what kind of a yakuza is he? He looks like a pidgeon could drop-kick him. I buy Dylan Kuo as a gangster in The Outsiders. I buy Lee Seo Jin as gangster in Lovers. I buy Lee Wan as gangster in Tree of Heaven. If they cast Yamapi or Oguri Shun as a yakuza, I could buy it. I do NOT buy Matsuda Shota in his present emaciated state. What I would buy is a plate of food for him, though.

This weekend, it's Capital Scandal (which is still best thing ever) with [livejournal.com profile] filmi_girl and more of delightful Snow White on my own.

After [livejournal.com profile] filmi_girl came over and we had a blast watching Capital Scandal (yes, I love it enough to rewatch it ASAP and we will continue tomorrow), I decided I was too exhausted to watch Snow White so put in something stupid. This 'stupid' is Jotei, a Japanese drama about a high school student who decides to achieve revenge on the high and mighty by becoming top hooker. And selling her virginity expensively. Yes. I didn't know hard drugs were legal in Japan, but clearly they must be because that is what the writers are on.

You guys, Jotei is SO stupid.

My braincells die just watching it.

I mean, barely three minutes in, and our heroine has already fondled a statue's genitalia and declared something is 'missing' because bits have been chipped off.

And told guy classmate that 'oh, you have it too!' and added to his understandably WTF reaction 'it's because I have no father, so these are new to me.'

She must have very odd understanding of familial relationships.

Did I mention that ep one has two separate rape attempts on heroine by two separate men. One of whom is our gangster hero, who initially plans to sell her into sex trade but changes his mind when she explains she wants to sell her virginity expensively. This creates TRUE LOVE in him.

Did I mention that the leading lady can't act?

This has got to be the most dreadful drama I have ever seen. And I love it. Unlike merely boring twdrama Peach Girl or similar, this is so ridiculous it transgresses 'bad' and becomes so atrocious it forms total entertainment.

I feel like cleaning my head with bleach. And yet I can't stop.

After this, I need to watch something really good in jdrama. Probably Rondo, One Million Stars, Ice World, Love Revolution or Hotaru No Hikari (sp?).

SO STUPID. SO FUN.

Finished Itoshi Kimi E which was perfection.

I think Pride is ultimately still my fave jdrama (I am going to rewatch it shortly) but this is a very close second.

And such hopefulness and sweetness. I was smiling and awwing. Which is just as well after earlier hell.

Thoughts while watching )

This is going into my Top 5 dramas ever.

Screencaps coming.

Next drama most likely to be Jotei. I had such awesome run lately, I am about due for a lame one, so I might as well pick a deliciously cheesily entertainingly lame one.

This morning continues pretty good: the sky is shinily blue, I am wearing my favorite sweater/skirt combo (corded, form-fitting turtleneck of black-gray-pale pink and down to the ground a-line skirt, dark brown with a few thick, roughly patterned black/gray/pale pink stripes). Plus my favorite black boots, and I got complimented on my looks this morning by metro guys :D

I think I am now in that point in my drama cycle, where I madly crave jdrama (just as a few months ago I was in kdrama cycle, and before that twdrama). So a lot of this are rambles about potential candidates.

Anyway. Since this is long, varied, and rather rambly, I am going to cut, to spare the flist.

Various, relating to Japanese entertainment )

And now, about manga )

I think I am now in that point in my drama cycle, where I madly crave jdrama (just as a few months ago I was in kdrama cycle, and before that twdrama). So a lot of this are rambles about potential candidates.

Anyway. Since this is long, varied, and rather rambly, I am going to cut, to spare the flist.

I found this awesome MV of Majo No Jouken (Forbidden Love), still one of my favorite Japanese dramas. It's funny because I adore it even though the instinctive squick factor of her being a teacher and him being a student (26/17 respectively) never goes away. But whatever my views on that in general, Michi and Hikaru so need each other and so match.
