I am so sorry, Kim Hyun Joong, but Joe Cheng will always be my ideal Naoki.

Ahem.

Anyway.

Thanks the the wonderful [livejournal.com profile] ockoala, I was made aware of Joe Cheng's new drama, That Love Comes, costarring Le Fei Er.

Now, I am an unabashed Joe Cheng fangirl. It's hard not to become one after ISWAK and TKA. But, let's face it, Joe's choices of roles have been, like his buddy Mike He's, rather uneven. Have you tried sitting through Love or Bread or Summer x Summer (the latter has been voted by yours truly as the worst drama she has ever seen). So, despite [livejournal.com profile] ockoala's enthusiastic post, I approached TLC with a degree of trepidation.

I have just finished the first episode (first four eps are out, and three are subbed so far on viikii) and am so glad to report - Ockoala was right and my trepidations were groundless. TLC is lovely - it has a vibe of a mellow kdrama mixed with the freshness and emotional immediacy of a twdrama. Think of a cross between Wish to See You Again, Soulmate and Autumn's Concerto, with a bit of Starlit thrown in.

The story is pretty simple and has been told about a million times before, but it's the way it's told that counts. Ye Zi, our heroine, is a small-town girl earning money in the big city. Her paths cross with Xia Tian, a big time photographer dissatisfied with his life, and the story goes from there. It's lovely and romantic and gorgeous and just - I love.

Have a preview:

Despite the fact that this LJ is 90% kdramaland, twdramas (and by extension cdramas) will always speak to me the way no other dramas do. They were, after all, my gateway and my first love. And you never forget your first, do you?

ETA: You know, maybe more twdrama idols should go Mainland. I haven't liked anything of Mike He's in years anywhere near as much as I did what I saw of Infernal Lover.

I've been in a bit of a drama slump for a couple of months - there were a number of dramas I liked well enough (Baker, Giant) but none I was getting that delicious pit-of-the-stomach obsessive feeling about.

Thankfully, period cdrama Infernal Lover has finally got a lot of eps subbed on viikii and I can finally wallow in its angsty awesome period deliciousness. I got preemptively obsessed with it (just check out my infernal lover tag) after watching some clips and vids, plus the first ep subbed on viikii. But at the time, that was the only ep subbed and there was no way I could follow a drama, entirely in Mandarin, which dealt with double agents and revolutionary politics, without subs. I tried, trust me, I tried. But now, at least 10 eps are subbed, so I continued with my watch. Am through ep 4 and totally obsessed. In fact, fighting the urge to stay up the rest of the night to watch all the subbed eps.

I posted a summary before, but here goes: IL is set at the turn of the century and stars Mike He and Deng Jia Jia as, respecitvely, an undercover nationalist agent who has managed to become a chief of the brutal secret police force and a beggar girl who falls in love with his hidden kindness. There is a lot of intrigue, guns, and period clothes.

So far, both heroine and hero are bucking for Most Unlucky/Miserable Life Winner award. In the first 4 eps:

Heroine:

Lives in poverty, starving, and having to beg on the streets
All she earns goes to her little nephews and the rest to evil sister-in-law who mistreats her
Gets mistaken for a revolutionary and horribly tortured
And shot and almost killed
And almost drowned
Sold into slavery into creepy household whose master almost rapes her
Gets caught by secret police again (though let go).

Hero:

Brought up on the streets as starving and mistreated orphan
In order to further revolutionary cause, has to be double agent and work for evil secret police
And kill fellow revolutionaries to prove good faith
And torture people
And is ordered to kill his adoptive father, the one person who showed kindness to him. And who now tells him to kill him for the cause. So he does
And his stepbrother believes he is a traitor and hates him
And singer he likes turns out to be a total psycho who tortures him and his girlfriend and tries to burn them to a crisp (many eps in the future but I spoiled self for that)

Basically, there is not enough therapy in the world for either of these people. She is still pretty upbeat though in a "I won't let life get me down" way which is just as well because he's one constant walking nervous breakdown. (I gotta love a drama where hero falls for heroine because she's the one person who unhesitatingly believes he's a good person - something he himself doesn't believe at all).

I already posted this MV, but here it is again.

Yes, I realize I am horrendously behind on replies, again. I promise to get to them asap. After I watch just one more ep of IL. Just one..or two...or three...

What I am watching or dropping has changed considerably from what I planned, so I thought a quick update is in order.

Dropped

Sunao Ni Narenakute - it's finished but so am I. I got through ep 3 before the tripe became too much - I have no idea what the writer was on, but it must have been strong.

Tsuki No Koibito - what a waste of my time! The only storyline I was interested in was Kimutaku's with LCL - I ffed through the rest as it was boring as rocks. Thankfully, LCL/Kimutaku are done so I can drop this drama.

Dong Yi - it's a good drama but a bit too slow for me after period cdramas. Plus, I prefer the epic war sageuks to court intrigue ones.

Road N. 1 - the first ep was horrifying. Unless flisties let me know that it gets better, this one stays lost. Better luck next time, SJS!

Postponed

My Country Calls - I enjoyed it but am in the mood fot angst right now. I will probably pick it up shortly.

Coffee House - ditto. It was awesome but I want an angstfest.

Calling for love - ditto. I want angst!

Bad Guy - like Mawang, it's a drama that needs to be marathonned. But I foresee falling from grace soon and watching it as it airs anyway

Watching/About to Start Watching

Summer Desire - I am unhealthily obsessed with this. No idea why because it's so OTT but it's my kryptonite

Easy Fortune Happy Life - am on ep 3 and I really like it. I don't know why I am attached to it when I am not in a fluffy mood and it's fluff but I blame it on my hormones' reaction to Blue Lan. Plus, the trope of rich asshole woobie reformed by spunky poor girl is my fave ever.

Yankee-kun to Megane-chan - who'd have thought that of big jdramas this spring/summer, it would be this little one which would prove to be the best. I adored the first ep and now have time for more. YAAAAAY.

Young Warriors of the Yang Clan - I am watching it slowly but it's enjoyable, even if I am not rabid over it the way I was over LOCH or Myth.

Legend of Condor Heroes 2008 - I am on ep 33 and it's all sorts of awesome. I am ready for another marathon after a little break.

Comrades - I've heard it's much better than RN1 and I am in the mood for a war drama.

Kim Soo Ro - finally there are subs and I am checking this out TODAY. I see my new big obsession.

Men and Legends - once disc 2 gets here from netflix as for some reason it's the only one I do not have.

Infernal Lover - I am haunting the viikii page for more subs. It's unhealthy but I cannot help it.

And speaking of, I found another IL scene from the middle of the drama somewhere. How can it be so awesome? It's like all the drama cliches and things I want and don't get. Except here.

So here is my list.

I am going slightly batty wanting to watch Infernal Lover but having only the first 2 eps subbed so far. So I went around digging on youtube for clips and hit a veritable treasure trove of awesomeness, the crown sequence of which I bring to you. I have NO idea what's going on (all I know it's from the middle of the drama somewhere) except that it involves the OTP and is a scene I have always wanted to see in a drama without knowing it. I mean - I have no words. This is even better than the 'Domyouji lets goons beat him up to protect Makino' scene or 'Fan Bing Bing jumps off a cliff so that Nic Tse's evil adoptive parents would cure him as per bargain' scene - it's everything I want - h/c, angst, shippiness, and insane OTP interlopers.

Curses, why did I take Welsh instead of Mandarin in college? The Welsh never gave me this (it's all one scene, just cut into 3 clips for some reason).

Moral of the story - DO NOT DATE A DOUBLE AGENT. BAAAAAAAAAAD THINGS WILL HAPPEN. FOR MY ENTERTAINMENT.

P.S. Hey, [livejournal.com profile] darkeyedwolf, tempted yet?

The story of Infernal Lover, set in turn-of-century China and following a double-agent, may be a giant nervous breakdown waiting to happen (I am impressed the protagonist gets out of bed in the morning) but it is an insanely pretty nervous breakdown.

An unspoilery picspam of promotional shots of incredible gorgeousness. And I am not just referring to Mike He's face )

That was my reaction to ep 2 of Infernal Lover.

Our double-agent protagonist has just shot and killed his adopted father, to prove his loyalty to the bad guys! And before said Daddy keeled over, he told protagonist that he has made a good choice (to maintain his cover and get further up in the hierarchy).

I mean - I mean - I mean - there is not enough AAAAAAAAAAARGH in the world! I can't even say "get therapy" because that won't help.

Beat THAT family trauma, any other drama I've seen in recent memory!

I think that will be my manpain criteria now - "what, you are angsting? Did you have to shoot your father? Nope, then stop whining."

I confess I am not shipping protagonist with the heroine at all - I mean, there are damaged woobies love can fix, and then there is that. I think she and the cute sweet revolutionary guy who rescued her should get together. While protagonist gets his brain wiped and gets some major medication.

In news of slightly less messed-up heroes, who else has watched ep 5 of Summer Desire. So good! I wallow in the soapy shipness to the hilt. The thing is, ep 5 convinced me of two things: (1) Luo Xi and Xiamo would probably end up in a total trainwreck as their damage is too similar and (2) I desperately ship them. Desperately. They are so messed-up and gorgeous and sexy and vulnerable together.

The thing is, I am coming around more and more to the thought that Luo Xi is just irretrievaly damaged. Maybe that is why I want him to have happiness at the end the most - because he's the most broken one. I mean - his abandonment issues and insecurities - are kinda hard for me as a mommy to watch (these dramas are making me paranoid about my parenting :P). Like how he does not expect Xiamo to stick around when he comes home (even though she is his gf and earlier said she would) - his hand is shaking when he is pressing the bell, how he blows up at her over that whole newspaper/calls business - it's total insecurity and he himself realizes he is being absurd but he cannot stop. Or when he walks out of the bathroom and expects her to be gone after their fight, even though it wasn't such a bad fight at all. He may be famous and all but he has no inner sense of self-worth or security at all. He expects to be abandoned as a matter-of-course - his clinging and lashing out are both a result of that. Man, I wish I could find his horrible mother and strangle her through a computer screen - you do not NOT do that to a child, *****, ever.

His picking a fight/rubbing into Ou Chen's face that Xiamo chose him is also from the same source - it's as if it's himself he is reassuring.

I have no answer to the argument that Ou Chen is better for Xiamo (he is damaged, too, but in a complimentary, not similar way), but my heart is so very set on Luo Xi/Xiamo. I just want the two of them to heal each other even though that's impossible - for someone like LX, Xiamo with her problems with emotional openness and trust, is about the worst possible gf.

Imagine this scenario - you are a poor, unemployed young woman who has to support a score of small nephews and an evil sister-in-law. A well-dressed, attractive young man gives you some money, while trying to spare your pride. How nice, right? If you guys meet again, that may be good, right? Further acquiantance leads to love and all that?

WRONG!!!!!!

Heroine (in process of stealing to support her family) somehow ends up in the middle of a political assassination attempt and as the secret police closes in on her, she is found with a gun so she is taken for a ringleader and dragged off.

And then there strides in the young man who was so helpful and nice. Is he a helpful passerby or maybe a rebel leader? WRONG!!! Meet the captain of secret police, rebel-buster extraordinaire, and the gentleman who is about to order torture of everyone in the cell with you. And, once you confess to what he wants you to confess, he is going to have you tortured too, as bait for rebel leaders.

Can you say SOULMATES?????????

Oh, Infernal Lover, how you spoil me! Because Feng, the police captain, is actually a double agent, who is part of a rebel group and inflitrated the secret police. But within the ep we have seen him kill numerous rebels, torture innocent bystanders (who he knows are innocent), and just now order the mistreatment of a young woman he knows had nothing to do with anything as a form of bait. Did I mention the girl insisted he was a good person? Hah.

I really like that he is totally torn about it all and self-loathing and really would love to find any way to wiggle out of hurting her because she is an innocent. But I love even more that he does it anyway.

Huo Er is thick as two planks but she is kind and strong and has a dog's life (robbing dead people, so horrible!) and I desperately want her to be OK.

Did I mention they are the OTP????

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!

This is such a cheery drama, Good Lord. My favorite bit of happy times was when Feng's subordinate went in and was all "Captain, you know the girl has nothing to do with the assassination attempt, and she is hot, so can we have fun with her?" OMGOMGOMG WTF. Thankfully Feng told him he needs the girl as bait and if subordinate does anything of the sort, Feng will personally make sure subordinate is a cripple for life. (But beating her is OK? They are so fucked up!)

ETA: Boooooo! Viikii won't load the last part of ep 2 for me! But that is where sinfully pretty hero has his nervous breakdown! Do want! How dare they deprive me of this:

Cruel cruel cruel viikii!

Only two eps of this are subbed so far so I may just leave IL alone for a couple of months until the subbing is done. Waiting between eps would make a wreck out of me.
