I was all aflutter with anticipation for Hanbando - the trailers looked amazing, I adore the leads, and I was thinking I could have another IRIS!

After two episodes, I've come to a sad conclusion that IRIS shall remain unique and Shut Up shall remain the only airing kdrama I love.

The drama Hanbando reminds me most of is Poseidon, actually. It has the same slickness, action that is not particularly compelling, and a bunch of magnetic actors in unmagnetic roles. The plot didn't grab me, but the worst crime was that the characters did not - I didn't care one way or another about either Hwang Jung Min or Kim Jung Eun. They were neither compelling, nor complex, nor inspiring me to figure what makes them tick. Also (shockingly), their chemistry is lacklustre.

I will keep up with it for a few eps because I love action/politics drama and the actors, but it better shape up soon if it wants to keep my attention.

I apologize for the sporadic nature of my posts, but Mr. Mousie is very busy for a couple of weeks, so I am a de facto single parent through next week, which leaves one with a bit less time to blog. Anyway...

1. I am ridiculously nostalgic and feel like a Goong rewatch. It's my favorite candy-colored, emotionally-real-despite-manga-setup delight. Plus, I adore both Yoon Eun Hye and Joo Ji Hoon and their chemistry is insane. Who's with me? :)

2. I tried Dream High 2 and I didn't loathe it or anything, but it didn't click. There are too many characters, none of whom I can distinguish from one another and none of them interesting enough to motivate me to try. It feels like chewing plastic. The first DH, despite its flaws, was genuinely fun. Part of DH2's misfortune is that I keep comparing it to scruffy, heartfelt, real Shut Up, but leaving that aside, it's genuinely uninspiring on its own merits.

3. In news of other dramas that bored me - I gave Fermentation Family a chance, I really did. I know it's from the same people who made Mawang and Resurrection, but if I didn't know it, I would have never believed it. I believe FF may be used as a sleep inducer in insomniacs.

4. I am slowly watching and liking period cdrama Pretty Maid. Though unless I am missing something (and I hope I am), isn't the heroine and her OTP half-siblings? Eeeek.

5. I am madly excited to check out Hanbando/Korean Peninsula/Peninsula/18 million other titles. No softsubs yet, but it's streaming on dramafever.

6. This scene is pretty much the most awesome thing ever:

The one where he gets poisoned defending her, she immobilizes him so he won't be able to protest when she sucks out the poison, then she collapses but he manages to get her to the healing place in time )

It's pretty clear I am in a slump - the airing dramas either don't appeal to me or their vibe is wrong for my current mood.

Enter Hanbando, set to premiere on February 6. Check out new, longer trailer:

I want!

I am getting mad IRIS vibes from it, and that was one of my all-time favorite dramas. Nothing wrong with melos and romcoms but sometimes a gal just wants something different. Something different with violence, h/c, and Hwang Jung Min clutching Kim Jung Eun for dear life.

Btw, it's official, I am dumping Moon/Sun. It's not me, it'd you, drama! Koala referred to it as simplistic and I agree. She likes it but I can't. This is pretty much a Disney sageuk and that is very much not my thing - I like twisty politics and complex shades-of-grey characters which usually abound in sageuks, and both are absent here. There is nothing wrong with a very straightforward white hats/black hats period romance but is really not my thing.

Koala's awesome blog put Hanbando (Peninsula) on my radar. But it was this picture that turned me from interested to officially pre-obsessed:

Can one picture single-handedly make me add Hanbando to my three most anticipated 2012 kdramas (along with Rooftop Prince and Bridal Mask)? Well, when the picture is of stars Hwang Jung Min and Kim Jung Eun, who are supposed to play a couple who rise through political ranks and get emrboiled in intrigue in an alternate universe unified Korea? HELL FREAKING YESSSSSS!!!

The teaser does not hurt - it gives me IRIS vibe flashbacks, and if you remember how I was obsessed with IRIS, that's a great thing.

I need this right now! Luckily, it's airing on ChosunTV in February. Bring it on!!!
